Wilfully stupid opinions can only be properly engaged with mockery. Engaging stupid opinions seriously degrades the argument and weakens the arguer, which is the point of the stupid opinion to begin with.
There’s a schismatic group of Catholics called Sedevacantists, which contends no legitimate pope has been installed since the death of Pius XII in 1958 because all purported popes since then were heretics and not “papabile” under canon law.
I actually expect we’ll see something like that phenomenon on the RW, if Obama wins.
The only real effect this conspiracy-mongering will have is to rehabilitate Dan Rather’s reputation. A decade from now, there’ll just be a vague memory that right-wingers said that the Bush National Guard memos were fake and that Obama’s birth certificate was fake, and the two incidents will sort of blend together and be equally dismissed as partisan BS.
It would be amusing if any of the conspiracy-mongers has a moment of lucidity, followed by a “My God, What Have I Done?” realization, following by a cranial explosion…
