I acknowledge the issue isn’t proven, but I will tell you why I feel it’s at least likely that someone in the Clinton camp was responsible: the tepid non-denial from the Clinton camp.

No matter what you think of Clinton’s campaign - and they certainly might deserve to be looked at askance for their incompetence in many aspects of this campaign - they would have to be incredibly, cosmically stupid to think that this would be a good idea.
It could have easily gotten to Drudge in any number of ways if someone in the Clinton campaign did indeed want to smear Obama, not pointing back at the campaign. If you visit mydd.com and other sites on the blogosphere you’ll see that the picture was up on FreeRepublic Saturday and commenters suggested that someone send it to Drudge.
In reality, Obama’s campaign should apologize for accusing the Clinton campaign of sending the picture without proof beside Drudge’s word. (And yes, Maggie Williams’ first response should have stated that any staffer sending pictures, etc. off-message would be disciplined/shitcanned. I know she used that vague language because it would be easy to slam the campaign if indeed, Wingnut Campaign Peon #700 sent it off in an alcohol-induced haze.) Because if the threshold is “Drudge said it!” it is going to be a long season for BO. I have a feeling there’s going to be all kinds of weird stuff sprouting on that site, and all the RWers have to say is, “Hey, Obama trusts Drudge, so it’s probably true.”

Regardless, this image is highly disturbing in its implication that Obama might secretly harbor sympathies toward the Shriners. In these trying times, does America really need a president who might don a fez and run amok in a miniature car at any moment, chucking handfuls of hard candy in the faces of bystanding children?
Of course, there is an alternative: candidate John McCain’s combover can be trusted to slide loose immediately as a safety feature, should he for any reason momentarily succumb to the urge to wear undignified ethnic headgear. McCain’s scalp is rigorously designed to self-destruct entirely before it embarrasses America with dubious foreign haberdashery. Who, then, is the true heir to Reagan’s legacy of change?
Any knuckledraggers who can be swayed by this picture won’t be making that sort of nice distinction. Turban = towelhead = Muslim = terrorist.
You know, the more I think about this, the stupider it seems. If anything, that Obama would wear traditional African dress in Africa makes me more likely to vote for him. In my opinion, this is what America needs - a leader who respects other cultures and is willing to try something new (a new food, a different style of dress) in order to show that respect. A leader whose first impulse on seeing something different isn’t to want to bomb it.
It’s disgusting that some people appear to find his respect for foreign cultures a negative. What a bunch of turds.
