"As the CFO of this business that employs 140 people, I have resigned myself to the fact that Barrack Obama will be our next President, and that our taxes and government fees will increase in a BIG way.
To compensate for these increases, I figure that the Clients will have to see an increase in our fees to them of about 8% but since we cannot increase our fees right now due to the dismal state of our economy, we will have to lay off six of our employees instead. This has really been eating at me for a while, as we believe we are family here and I didn’t know how to choose who will have to go.
So, this is what I did. I strolled through our parking lot and found 8 Obama bumper stickers on our employees’ cars and have decided these folks will be the first to be laid off. I can’t think of a more fair way to approach this problem.
These folks wanted change; I gave it to them.
If you have a better idea, let me know.

The Big Gun "
Relatives. Can’t live with 'em, can’t burn 'em.
Is this really a plan one of your relatives has come up with? And s/he is bragging about it?
Just how dumb is s/he? Firing people based on political affiliation is so much of a no-no that I have trouble imagining anyone in the position of being a CFO doing it. Of course, I have heard stories from corporate America that were just as stupid, or more so, so I know it could be possible.
But if that’s the real plan - they might as well just close the business: The lawsuit awards that will be coming are probably going to bankrupt it.
Following that logic, it would be cool for a boss to fire his Republican employees since they probably voted for Bush (twice!) and we’re in the current mess because of him!*
*No, I don’t think Bush is responsible for this mess, though I don’t see him trying to help us right now.
So, to prevent an 8% hike in fees, they think it makes sense to fire six or eight (The CFO can’t seem to tell a difference between the two numbers in the original email) people. i.e. if you assume that everyone at the company is paid equally (a risible assumption, but let’s use it for now) the CFO is going to prevent an 8% rate hike by reducing payroll by 4.3% (six people out of 140) or 5.7% (eight people out of 140).
I think I see one reason the company is in financial troubles. :dubious:
Actually, it’s not that big of a no-no legally speaking. It is illegal in federal government employment, but there is not a federal law to that effect covering political affiliation discrimination by private employers. It is illegal in some states.
“Note: Many states and municipalities also have enacted protections against discrimination and harassment based on sexual orientation, status as a parent, marital status and political affiliation. For information, please contact the EEOC District Office nearest you.”
I guessing someone with a grudge could go out to the parking lot and put Obama bumper stickers on the cars of fellow employees that don’t like and want to see gotten rid of. Wouldn’t that be fun?
A business pays U.S. federal income taxes on “taxable income,” which is net income as specially defined for U.S. federal income tax purposes. Some states also tax net income and some states tax gross income. Businesses also pay the other half of employment taxes on each employee and lots of other taxes (i.e., property, sales and use, etc.).
If a company would have so many deadweight employees that randomly firing people would “solve” the problem, then the issues created by any tax increases are minor compared to the problems the business already has. Must be ran by a former GM exec.
Of course, this e-mail is just some “Mary Sue” pr0n, written by some tard who can’t handle the fact that his side lost.
What a coincidence! I just saw another CEO letter that went like this:
"As the CEO of this business that employs 140 people, I have resigned myself to the fact that the deregulation of the banking industry (caused by laissez-faire Republican policies) has caused an economic collapse and that our customer base is going to decrease.
To compensate for these decreases, I figure that our Clients would have to see an increase in our fees to them of about 8% but since we cannot increase our fees right now due to the dismal state of our economy, we will have to lay off six of our employees instead. This has really been eating at me for a while, as we believe we are family here and I didn’t know how to choose who will have to go.
So, this is what I did. I strolled through our parking lot and found 8 McCain bumper stickers on our employees’ cars and have decided these folks will be the first to be laid off. I can’t think of a more fair way to approach this problem.
These folks wanted freemarket capitalism; I gave them the freedom to find whatever job they want.
If you have a better idea, let me know.
There were ads like this just before the election. Some would say how he was going to hire more people and grow his business but if Obama got elected that he wouldn’t do it because ‘those guys’ don’t know what it’s like to run a small business.
I chuckled out loud when I read this. As I recall from what I read before the 2000 election, our current president had run several medium to large businesses, including one baseball team. All of them did poorly and or lost money under him, which is why I didn’t think much of his business experience. It seemed to me that, having ruined a few businesses, he was going to be given a shot at doing the same for the country.
As for what Obama will do about jobs, the headline in this morning’s newspaper was Obama’s stimulus goal: Create 2.5 million jobs. I think creating jobs will be better for the economy than just throwing money at people, and doing so by working on repairing roads and bridges and investing in alternative energy seems like a reasonable way to go about it to me.
