I’m not sure what those links are supposed to prove. All they are is links to other people who are worried that Obama will be assassinated. This proves nothing, except perhaps that people on the left are paranoid about right-wing machinations. The right steals elections, too. They’ll probably kill all the black leaders. Whatever.
If you’ve got a link to a credible FBI report suggesting that there is evidence of organized terror or assassination plans coming from Appalachia, I’m all ears.
The FBI and the Secret Service have an elevated amount of concern for Obama, at least partially bvecause of all the White Supremacist crap on the internets muttering darkly (and anonymously) about assassination. I don’t know why you’d expect to se particular “reports,” but they say they are monitoring things very carefully. There is no equivalent subculture in the US dedicated to the hatred and eradication of grumpy old white guys, and there is no terroristic threat (be it Islamic extremists or anyone else) which would exist for McCain which would not already exist in equal measure for Obama. Obama is subject to extra threats that McCain is not.
As knowlegdeable as you are about US politics and culture, I think you might not appreciate how alive militant white racist groups still are on an underground level. There are far more white racists than there are Muslim extremists.
Okay, that’s a fair point. I don’t have first-hand experience with white supremacist groups, although we have had them in Canada. I’m sure there are lots of yokels yammering about how they might have to kill politician X to save the country. From my outsider’s perspective, I just don’t see the threats being equally dangerous, given that extremist muslims are organized, well funded, and have already shown a tendency to kill whoever gets in their way.
Sam, this is specifically what I was trying to prove: that people are concerned that Obama is bigger target than usual. I suggest that when there is a substantial concern for someone’s safety, it is in bad taste for a public figure in a leadership role to joke about it in a public forum.
I know some suggest that the “right-wing” is some kind of evil cabal. I’m not one of them and those articles didn’t say anything about the threat coming from a representative demographic of the American right. For the record, I’m not worried about a conservative person making an assassination attempt; I’m concerned about some violent mentally unstable racist making an assassination attempt.
Nope, I don’t. If they had ongoing investigations of such, frankly I’d be surprised if it was their policy to make such things public. Most people don’t need permission from governmental bodies to be concerned about something. I would wager that “a credible FBI report” would upgrade people’s “concern” to a justified “alarm.”
I get the impression that you’re dismissing the concerns of people who don’t think like you as “anti-conservative conspiracy theorists” at worst and “liberal worry-warts” at best. I hope I’m just misreading you, just as I truly hope my concerns for Obama’s safety are unjustified.
