Let’s try this again in the correct forum. (Sorry about that, Mods; I don’t know how that happened.)
Story here. Onyango Obama, uncle of the president, was arrested in Massachusetts for drunk driving. He’s currently being detained on an ICE warrant, which probably means that he’s an illegal immigrant. Who wants to bet that they’re going to give him asylum against… uh, somebody-or-other… like they did with Obama’s aunt. She’s this guy’s sister, by the way.
So we’re supposed to skip the trial, declare him guilty, and … what are you suggesting? “The bailiff may fire when ready?”
If in fact he’s guilty of DWI, then I’m sure the trial will so reveal. After that, if he is not punished appropriately, I’ll share your outrage.
I know everyone is supposed to be treated equally, but if my nephew is President and he can’t fix a ticket for me . . .
Obama’s connections with that side of the family are tenuous at best. I don’t see him getting involved on any level.
Since when do they prosecute drunk drivers in Massachusetts?
Thanks. Everyone’s looking at me funny now.
Heeeeeee shoots and scores!
An ICE detainer does not = illegal immigrant. In fact, many violations of law can get you in trouble with immigration if you are perfectly legal to be here, say with a work or student visa, have lawful permanant residence, a green card, etc…
Actually, Janet Napolet… (sp?), Homeland Security lady, just issued a mandate to ICE to stop progress on the petty stuff and just focus on deporting the heavy hitters, criminally speaking. I will try and dig it up… it would probably make a good OP.
I knew Obama was bad for the country, just 4 years into his term and already we have hordes of drunken drivers on the road.
And to make things worse, they’re taking drunk driving jobs that could go to U.S. citizens.
At least Billy Carter and Roger Clinton will have somebody else to play cards with.
I read somewhere that he came to the US many years ago on a student visa and eventually dropped out of school and just kind of blended into the crowd, working, apparently drinking, and whatever. As hard as it is for many to believe, overstaying a visa isn’t a crime. It leaves him in a state of “not having his papers in order” and an immigration court has to figure out the particularities of his individual case.
He could be eligible for deportation for being charged with this crime while being here in such a situation. However, as noted by **llcoolbj77 **the State Department recently changed the policy for determining which deportations to pursue and which to put on indefinite hold. Of the more than 300,000 currently pending deportation orders, only those that involve violent crimes or national security are being given any priority. The rest are set aside, and those qualified are offered work permits.
Glad to see I wasn’t the only one who remembered good old Billy.
Well, I’ll never vote for Obama again.
Next thing you know one of Obama’s daughters will be busted for underage drinking!
I’d be more outraged if we’d had a President who’d been busted for DUI.
Oh, wait…
This may be exactly the break the McCain campaign has been waiting for!
Let me preface this by saying my father and my older brother were both in politics.
Growing up, I would guess that easily 60% of the people in my hometown knew who I was and it was a royal pain in the ass. I had to watch what I said, watch who I hung out with, watch what I did, and godforbid I ever made a single mistake that would bring scandal to the family. To give you one stupid example, I was 16 and driving around with friends and my friend Gary wanted a Snickers. Most businesses were closed, so we pulled up at a liquor store, Gary went in and bought his Snickers bar and off we went.
Before I got home, TWO people had called my parents to say they had seen me at a liquor store and what was I doing there?! Suddenly I was the town drunk.
There were hundreds of other examples, but that should show you how much fun it was to be me in a town where people knew you, but you didn’t know them.
I think it is disgusting how local wags and the press hound family members of politicians and celebrities. So what if Obama’s uncle got wild-ass drunk, pissed on flowers in the park and passed out on a jungle gym at the park? What the hell does that have to do with the President or anyone for that matter?
Sorry, but this has been a pet peeve of mine my entire life, and I feel sorry for any kid or family member of “famous” people who have all of the pressure, but none of the benefits of this so-called fame. And no, there were no real benefits to this direct connection to the well-known person; to the contrary - nobody wanted to ever cut you slack as it would be perceived as getting preferential treatment.
Sorry to put a damper on the fun quips and comments, but just wanted to give you my two cents.
