That part doesn’t surprise me. Jeans used to start at the waist and stop at the anklebone - now they start about 3-5 inches lower. (And, yes, boot cut go lower at the ankle, too, but not 3-4 inches longer.) I bet if you line up the crotches, you’ll find them about even - although crotches used to be lower, too, so maybe not.
Actually, the old pair are low waist boot cut jeans. Button fly, but otherwise pretty similar to the new ones.
I don’t know where any of you guys are getting your clothing but I’m going to start shopping there.
I’m about 5’ 7 1/2 (I tell people 5’8") and I weigh about 135 right now and I wear an 8. Sometimes bigger and a lot of that is boobs. I’m not bragging about that part, they’re 43 year old slightly saggy boobs that could use a lift. Granted I have a tendency to buy clothes too big but how in the hell is someone who’s 140 lbs fitting into a size 6?
My favorite Gap jeans are a size 12 too. And they’re not to big.
Just to continue the hijacking of this thread – because I am a huge Spiderman fan, I recently tried on some little kids’ size shirts (they were Spidey, shaddup!) I ended up buying 2 shirts from the little boys’ section at Wal-Mart size small (6/7). The shirts I’d tried on in the little girls’ section were mediums and a little snug, whereas the boys’ shirts fit me perfectly. WTF? By the by, I bought the boy shirts because they were black, not pink. People wonder why little girls have such self-esteem issues?
5’10" and 182 here. I can wear anything from a size 12 (Dana Buchman) to a size 14W (Fashion Bug jeans).
I was MO for years and have lost a lot of weight; I haven’t had reconstructive surgery yet, so I have a lot of excess skin in my midsection.
VCNJ~
I don’t suppose you could tell me where you shop, so I know what stores to avoid? I’m slightly taller than you but considerably lighter–last time I did any sewing I used a size 8 pattern and it was WAY too big. Yet I also buy size 1 or s/xs when shopping.
(Why am I suddenly getting the feeling that my clothes shopping is going to get a lot harder when I move to the other side of the border?)
And whoever posted the model pics…shivers I don’t know how those girls look themselves in the mirror. I’ve been that thin, and I certainly couldn’t.
It depends on your body composition I think. I’m 5’8" and between 140 and 150 and I wear a 4 or a 6 depending on the brand, but I have a LOT of muscle - I’m guessing that’s the difference.
Although 5’4", 140 in a size 6 would be super solid. Not undoable, for sure, but very little bodyfat, I think.
I believe it’s done as a percentage of one’s ideal weight, so it could be a lot less than 50 pounds. Which is handy for docs who want to be able to charge for treatment of “obese” people.
Wow. Huge thighs? It’s amazing how different perceptions can be.
pix plz
Are you sure you linked to the correct picture? There’s only one woman in that link whose thighs are visible, and she’s quite skinny, by today’s standards or that day’s standards.
This is what I was thinking too - I think the difference is that the linked add hasn’t been photoshopped, and those are actual, unretouched thighs we’re seeing. She’s quite thin, period.
As explained in a following post, the vintage model is huge in comparison to other models. Big enough such that she’d stand out as looking funny among the other ads (especially considering it’s a diet ad advocating slenderness).
Sorry for not making this distinction in the original post.
Nope. I’ve met some models. For the most part, they’re in the same league as Ann Coulter. Legs comparable to most men’s arms.
If I can join the sizing rant, I recently bought 3 pairs of the same style pants in different colors at the same store at the same time. I tried on 1 color. That one and one of the others fit. The third color, which I was planning to wear this morning, does not fit. I re-examined the tags–same size. The fabric seems to be a bit sturdier with less give in the pair that doesn’t fit, but these are all khakis, not spandex leggings. Sheesh!
I am about the same dimensions as you (5’ 7", 135 pounds) and I fit into a size 6 pants/jeans/skirts at The Gap, Ann Taylor, Banana Republic, American Eagle, etc. And a small or size 6 or 4 for tops (I have modest boobage).
When I was in high school (and a serious athlete), I was 5’4" and 167 in a size 8. It was ALL muscle. (Same weight in the flabbiness of a cubicle-dweller a decade later is a 12/14)
Are we talking about the same picture? The model in the swimsuit sitting down with one leg bent?
I think it’s the angle that makes her legs appear larger. Not that I think they’re big either but when you sit your leg spreads out a little. I think if she was standing up facing you she’d look thin. No one likes to be photographed sitting down because your thighs look heavier.
I think it’s the shape of my body. I’m pretty small boned and have a very short torso and long legs. That’s why I can’t gain weight or I’ll look like this
5’6"+ and between 135-140 depending on the time of the month, 41 years old, little muscle weight.
In a skirt at the low end of my weight or a vaniety skirt, I can wear a six, usually too tight at 140. Pants, no way - too short, too tight.
Generally I buy Dockers, size eight long.
I need large sweaters and shirts for the chest.
Which is part of the issue…I have fairly long legs and a fairly large chest on a not terribly large frame. The other part of the problem is that at 41, I still wear my pants to sit on my waist - occationally my hips, not be held up by my pubic bone.
Now, I spent my college years being 119-121 lbs and wore a size six pretty dependably - in college fashion (i.e. tighter than I would now). The fact that I’m close to a six when I’m 135 in the same Levi 501s tells me something has changed other than my 15 lbs.
