I bought Oblivion, the RPG and I can’t seem to get into it. I know that I can do anything I want in the game but I can’t seem to free my imagination to explore what is available. I find that too often, I approach someone and the kill me. I try to run away but they chase me. Am I supposed to kill them? How? I suck at fighting.
Does anyone have any suggestions on what I can do in this game?
Oblivion difficulty is linked to your level - it’s pretty hard to get killed once you get the hang of it. Have you begun following the plot? When I started I did a little dungeon delving first just to get some cash together. There’s a couple of easy ones near where you exit the sewer.
If all else fails leg it towards the city gates and let the guards take care of things. Then you can lot the corpses.
What class are you playing? I found a bow dead useful.
What level are you? What is your specialty (do you fight with weapons or with magic?)
I’ve found that the best way to increase your skills is to go to the coastal areas and kill the mudcrabs and other smaller animals until you level up. Goblins are usally pretty easy to kill, and they’re most often found in mines. (The dungeons and ruins often have necromancers and higher-level monsters, so you may want to avoid them until you’re a little strongers.) The sewers are a great place to find rats, which are pretty easy to kill.
Have you joined a guild? The fighter’s guild has a lot of fun missions, and the baddies you run into are adjusted to your level, so it shouldn’t be too hard.
You can also adjust the general difficulty of the game if that’s what’s taking the fun out of it. Go to your save screen and you’ll see “Options”. Move the difficulty bar down so that the game is easier. (I had to do that.)
If you really suck at fighting, you may want to become a mage. I suck at it, too, because I didn’t grow up with a controller in my hand, so hitting all of those buttons in rapid succession is difficult for me. Being a mage is much easier. My favorite spell is the “Hail Storm” spell. It casts in a wide circle and goes a long distance, so you can kill enemies which haven’t even seen you yet. It can kill multiple enemies at one time, too. Get the Hail Storm spell and one of the Fire Ball spells (because some creatures aren’t harmed by cold). Make sure they’re ranged spells, not touch spells. (It’ll say something like “20 points damage in 15 feet range”.)
This game is really a lot of fun. I’ve been playing it continuously since it was released. I’ve solved it once (becoming leader of both the mage’s guild and the fighter’s guild in the process).
I suggest you buy the guide book. It’s really helpful, especially in the descriptions of the missions and the various ruins and dungeons. (Some of them can be very dangerous if you don’t know what you’re doing.)
I’m not sure what level I am or who I am but I will find out. I found it very confusing that they threw a whole bunch of possibilities of who I could be each with a vague description of each. I just picked a character randomly.
Thanks for your help. I will try and increase my skill by going into the caves.
You’ll want to spend more time learning about the character creation process, because it’ll dramatically impact your future gameplay.
I presume what you’re running into are bandits and such. If someone is hostile towards you, it’s a good idea to kill them.
If you’re finding the game too difficult, there’s a difficulty slider in the options. Be careful, though - a small adjustment can substantially affect the game.
