I vaguely recall a rather strange golf tournament from what I think was the 1970s, and was wondering if anybody else remembers it.
It was single-elimination, like a match play event, but each “match” was 18-hole stroke play between two players.
I’m not thinking of the “CBS Golf Tournament” that was held on weekends; this was a single-week event. I want to say that they held the PGA Championship like this one year, but I can’t find any record of this. Does anybody else remember a tournament like this?
There is Medal-Match Play, where a Match is won by the lowest total number of strokes. They played that format in a golf exhibition in Turkey last fall. Tiger, Rory were in the exhibition, Justin Rose won.
The Shell Wonderful World of Golf used to play medal match exhibitions back in the 1960’s and 1970’s, but it was just two players (sometimes 3 players) in a 18 hole exhibition.
In 1958, the PGA Championship went from Match Play to Stroke Play. But it was classic Match play (by holes) and not Medal Match Play.
