obscure Swedish (?) folk tale (?) help needed

I’ve wondered for years about this.

When I lived in Denmark for awhile, early on, I went to see a theatre production of a story which I think was the Swedish equivalent of Robin Hood. The title was “Gyngehovdingen,” and no, I can’t remember if I’ve spelled it right. There were a lot of Swedish and Danish flags–I kind of got the impression that it was set about 300 years ago–everyone was dressed like a Cavalier–and the hero was this Swedish Gyngehovding fellow. There was quite a bit of swordfighting, IIRC.

I did not understand enough Danish at the time to be able to figure out what was going on. I’ve always wondered what the story was supposed to be. Did this guy really exist? What did he do? Someone give me a hint here! A book title, perhaps–I’d like to know the whole thing. I’ve already Googled the word and come up with nothing, so I think I spelled it wrong.

From a genuine Swede:

Göingehövdingen is the right name. It means “the chief of Göinge”. Göinge is a
small village in the south of Sweden. C.Aug Cederborg has written a novel called
“Göingehövdingen”. It´s about the time when some of southwest of Sweden was
Danish territory and started to be invaded by Swedish troops. In this area lived
the so called “Snapphanarna”, farmers that got some of their income by stealing
from Swedish transports. It´s about 1650-1680 I would guess.
Göinge is not far from where I grew up. Danish territory until 1655 i think.

Wow. I thought this thread would win the record for fewest replies, but hey! here’s my answer. Yay! Thanks, now I can look it up properly. I wonder if the novel is available around here…
