I was just thinking about the word ‘occupation’. You know, a job. Why they hell is it called an ‘occupation’? I mean, is a job just something to keep us occupied? I just found that kinda weird. It’s almost like something some hippy would say to promote his ‘alternate lifestyle’. So, why are we just being occupied? What is next? Just wanted to say that
No, kgriffey79 – in an occupation, you aren’t the one being occupied, you are doing the occupying, that is, you are in possession or holding down a position or a job. The word comes from the Latin occupare, “take over, seize, possess, occupy.” (Chambers Dictionary of Etymology, one o’ my fave references.)
I think they call it an occupation because you can have an occupation other than a job, i.e. a post with remunerated work. You could be a house spouse or a student, for example.
I think it is just because some days I merely occupy my office… like today when I am reading the SDMB instead of say… doing any work.

Then again, there’s always the sign on airline restroom doors…
