Odd Man Out

According to Wikipedia, he had problems with his legs, although it isn’t specific on exactly what.

So, is he the odd man out because he was the only one from your list who actually needed the crutches?

Pretty much. What I was going for was that the other actors were able-bodied, but used the devices because the parts called for them, while in Barrymore’s case, an able-bodied part was altered to need crutches, because Barrymore needed them in real life. There’s a brief line added to the film about how he broke his foot, and had it all bandaged up. He played two major roles in wheelchairs afterward: Dr. Kildare’s (Lew Ayres) mentor in the whole Dr. Kildare series, and Mr. Potter in It’s a Wonderful Life. Somehow, it worked. The kindly mentor in Dr. Kildare came across as a man who was very ready to pass on his knowledge as he felt his career ending, and Mr. Potter came across as a man who needed to flex his pecuniary power since he lacked physical power. That’s real acting chops when you can take a serious disability and make it work for you.

Erm, that’s not the answer I had in mind.

Which of the following is the ‘Odd Man Out’?
Richard Dreyfuss
Alec Guinness
Ben Kingsley
Charles Laughton
George C. Scott
Timothy Spall
Some of the earlier groups haven’t yet been solved, including:

I have a solution for this one, but am not overly confident it’s the solution originally intended! :smack: Help?

Spall’s name on the list suggests they might have played Chuchill?

Catherine Carey is the only one who didn’t marry a cousin?

Glad to see some responses! Let’s get this thread hopping again — it’s fine to submit new lists while older lists remain unsolved.

Close. All but one on the list played the role of _______.

No. This one may be ridiculously hard for anyone not an English royal genealogy buff. As hints, first I’ll remind about the genealogies with two solutions that *almost *work.

A. Each has same given name as parent. Edward Black Prince was son of Edward III, James Pretender was son of King James II, Henry VIII was son of Henry VII, Queen Victoria was daughter of Duchess Victoria, Victoria the Empress was daughter of Queen Victoria herself. But this leaves TWO people out (Carey and Gaunt) so doesn’t work.

B. Each had a son crowned as sovereign. But again there are two exceptions since James Pretender’s son, Bonnie Prince Charlie the Young Pretender, was AFAIK never crowned as a King despite his claim. Even the Pope refused to recognize him!

Clap me on the back! I did derive a solution which, despite lack of any clear memory thereof, is almost surely the solution I intended 4 years ago. The solution assumes the truth of a controversial assumption (supported by much circumstantial evidence) about Henry Carey (Catherine Carey’s father). This relationship serves as a big hint for the Odd Man Out puzzle.

Why didn’t other courtesans come forth to confirm Henry Carey’s royal paternity? Henry VIII’s prior fathering of children by Anne Boleyn’s sister made the marriage of Henry and Anne illegal.*** John Haile was executed at Tyburn two weeks after he gave the quoted testimony.*** (BTW, the martyr Haile was beatified in 1886 by Pope Leo XIII.)

Played Lord Wellington? Sweeney Todd?

IMDB has eliminated character lookup, in their rush to a useless shit site.

Rather than spoilering any of the pending puzzles, here is another one, for the chemists:
benzene
caffeine
cyclohexanol
fructose
glucose
lysine
niacin

No.
Hint: None of the performances were live theater. Is there a Cafe Society thread listing stories or roles played at least five times?

But does it saturate the browser with javascripts? Some horrid sites bring my struggling small-memory laptop to a screeching halt.
