I just want to say that I currently despise Office.
I am working on a paper in Word. The only fonts shown as available is the Device Font iin 10, 12 and 17. I need more traditional fonts. I went to the control panel, then to fonts, and they are all installed on my computer, so I should have them available in Word, right? Now, I can type “Times New Roman” into the font box to select it. What I get then is the message “Times New Roman is not available on your system. Do you want to use it anyway?”. If I click “yes”, the font is then available - but only for the specific document I am working on. The next time I start a new paper, I have to go through the process again.
This only happens when I’m connected to the wireless network on campus though. When I’m at home and not online or using dialup, I open Word, and have the fonts I want. For this problem, I think I’m going to head over to the computing office and see if they can help me. The next should be something that I’m just not doing right.
I thought that maybe there’s an update that I missed or something, so I tried to check for updates, but when I do that, I get an error message that my security settings prohibit running ActiveX controls on this machine. I check the security settings, make sure they are set to enable for signed and prompt for unsigned, click “Apply” and try again to check for updates. No dice, it still tells me the same thing.
Whether this is relevant or not, I don’t know, but I cannot use IE to access any secure sites on this laptop. I can access them through Netscape, so that’s what I use for e-mail and banking. I am running Windows XP Home. I do have Zone Alarm installed - could it be causing any problems (I just turned it off to check, and still get the same message)? The secure sites problem happens whether I am at home or on campus.
