Well, while she doesn’t actually teach, Ivan does have all the books in the library at his disposal, so he can learn all the magic he desires. He’s just, let’s face it, crap at it; he’d be better off finding another job.
Anyway, I can think of several episodes (like here and here) where the Mistress is just teasing him, but which can be seen as tests: how good is the apprentice at actually using magic?

On a different note…I…totally have no idea what’s going on with the ‘meanwhile’ part of today’s update…
When we last left Ivan he was being drugged by who is presumably the real killer in the city of virgins so I would suppose this is where he’s been taken.

Yes, I too sometimes have difficulty with the characters running together in my mind. If this strip has a flaw it is that the cast is far too large for the speed of the plot.
I was thinking it was going to turn out to be the mercenary or the one-eyed thief. But I guess not.
And most of the characters are very female and hot. You can’t label anybody ‘the hot one’ in your head without getting immediately confused.
Perhaps if you rank Mistress, Mercenary and um, Barbarian? you could then use the hot one, the hotter one, and the hottest one?
Where did Ivan get the wound on his leg? It looks like a bite mark!
He did get bitten by the monster in his shoulder bag. That was just before he opened the bag in daylight and the monster exploded.

Yeah, “Use Item” is a fairly weak entry. Last week’s “Blank Page” was way better.
I Liked it, but that was because I used sell my D&D buddies fake single use magical Items:feather of faling(1 charge)
Oh… I thought Blank Page was pretty much a filler.
Use Item at least continues the story of the one-eyed thievess.
Unfortunate circumstances aside, looks like the Apprentice might finally get some action.
