is that a rhetorical question?
I’ve got a little list…
Of course as we later found out, the sentient semen asks for permission to splash on her titties, but if permission isn’t forthcoming, they splash on her face.
Or “I’ll let you field this one Captain”.
05-01-11: The story of the princess (Snow White?) continues. So she survived the dwarves anyway.
As much as I don’t like the invisible city/monster storyline, I do enjoy getting two or three comics on a Sunday vs just a single.
For a webcomic with what seems (to me) to be a pretty substantial following she’s doing almost nothing to monetize the size re ads and merchandise. Her “buy stuff” link is pathetic. I know she has another comic she works on, but I’m surprised she’s not doing more with the popularity of the webcomic.
She can’t be getting any real money from this. It’s a labor of love so I can’t really bust on her for what she puts out in terms of volume.
You say that like it’s a bad thing. Has selling out become cool these days ?
Not only was Calvin and Hobbes an outstanding comic, I admire Bill Watterson for refusing to cash in on the millions on merchandise he could have made. It was about the comic series and nothing else.
Yeah, it has. Because people recognize that if you make money off doing awesome, you’re liable to keep doing awesome.
I think money can have the opposite effect sometimes. The pressure to create can lead to prioritizing quantity vs quality. Hence cable vs broadcast.
Based on what I have heard in podcast type discussions (PVP creator Kurtz had several of these) between webcomic artists about the profession and the struggle to survive based on webcomic income, most webcomic artists would kill for enough popularity to be able to successfully make a living at doing what they love. I don’t think they consider being able to pay their mortgage and grocery bill “selling out”.
Maybe Oglaf’s creator is independently wealthy or this is just a play around project. It’s just surprising she does not do more with the popularity as so many webcomic artists struggle to make ends meet.
Yup. Wikipedia actually has a big entry for self-sufficient webcomics:
And Watterson had a syndicate paying him for his output. Trudy Cooper just has whatever she makes off the website.
What is the other web comic?
I didn’t know about it and looked it up when I saw astro’s comment. Apparently it is Platinum Grit. I will be checking it out when I have more time.
Sidenote: when searching for the name of this other webcomic, I wound up at the forums for Platinum Grit, which contained a thread about Oglaf with a link to this Aussie commercial on youtube.
Does that little guy look familiar?
Not to mention the legion of fuckwads who see bloggers & webcomic artists “monetizing” their stuff and start their own crappy derivative knockoff just to make bank. Or worse, who get approached by marketroids to sling *their *shit on the sly and figure it’s all right, it’s just “monetizing” (god I hate that word).
Which is bullshit. You write or draw or compose because you like doing it, that’s the root cause of blogging & webcomicing. It’s its own reward, and the fans are just ego-fellating gravy. Using them to sling dollar bin shit is offensive to me, not to mention a real cheap going rate to sell out.
And I say this as a (former) successful blogger who adamantly refused any and all offers to turn my rants into moolah. The purpose of Art is to be prostituted for sex, not money !

More aside: panel 5 of ep 20: the chick kinda looks like Dr. Mrs. The Monarch from The Venture Bros. …
WTF and all that. I clicked on “yeah, dammit, I’m over 18” and I just got “forbidden” error screen bullshit.
