Well hey, evolution made it.
Adam Yax.
Don’t know where you got the quote but it seems to read to me,
“Hey ,we know we are wrong,we just made all this up to see if there are any people out there who are stupid enough to oppose us”
The problem with organised religion for me is that it seeks to control me in every way to smother my mind ,to control whom I may or may not have sex with and to choose with whom I can legitimately communicate.
Now if that was a government doing that I’d have an Armalite in my hand in no time.
Lately the church seems to be saying that it has the answer to the search for happiness(Things go better with Jesus)
Well I’ve got news for it-if happiness was the be all and end all I’d be so stuffed full of drugs I’d rattle.
What the hell can you make of an organisation that opposes contraception and then condemns those who have to deal with the inevitable result ie-unplanned pregnancy and abortion. An organisation that at one time opposes sex education and then is surprised at the rise in teenage pregnancy. An organisation that believes its leading icon,-a man(inevitably), when he declares himself “infallable”.
What about those who declare that if you kill you will go to “paradise” or that it is right to allow another to die for lack of a medical procedure?
Look at what is happening in Uganda right now, that’s religion for you.
Much of modern Christianity is based around the simple fact that God’s son was not recognised and various ocurrances which follow on from that.
Ye Gods ,how the f*ck are we supposed to recognise Him?What proof is it possible for any being to provide that would be conclusive and that we could understand?(Basis for another thread here no doubt)
“I am compassionate” says God one way or another “but if you don’t believe you’ll be drowned, plagued, burnt in hell and you’ll deserve it wether you are old ,weak ,a child,or just simply mistaken”.
Dammit these are the words of despots not of God and the despots keep getting us to dig more mass graves…
Do not wait for the last judgement-It takes place every day

New state motto- Oklahoma! We make Idaho look good.
Eagles may soar free and proud, but weasels never get sucked into jet engines.
adam yax: Wonderful quote! What’s the source? I’d like to add it to my home page.
Thanks, I think that the paper it came from is great. It is from a paper called Scientific Creationism: World View, not Science by Alice B. Kehoe. It is in the book Cult Archaeology & Creationism: Understanding Pseudoscientific Beliefs about the Past. Edited by Francis Harold and Raymond Eve. University of Iowa press, 1995.
Gee, I don’t think any of us expected him to say that.
I’m suspicious of any source that claims something is “a serious effort to buttress the economic and political power of the traditional American bourgeoisie.”
Why are you suspicious? Since religion is the opiate of the masses, isn’t it reasonable to assume that thoses masses hold a degree of economic and political power?
IMHO, that sentence is discussing the effects that the opiated can have on the rest of us. Remember the Christian Coalition, and remember the boycott of Disney? The religious sheeple will do what they’re told. Even support things that are directly against the Constitution.
Gee, I don’t think any of us expected him to say that.

PBBBBTTTHHHHHH!!!
So there!
OK, it’s not as bad as it looks on the surface. Close, but not quite.
The original bill was to add actual TEACHERS to a state textbook committee (quite a concept, doncha think?!).
The bit about “one God” was an amendment tacked on by some wacko, along with another amendment giving the committee power to add disclaimers/statements to textbooks. (This is all because the !~@%*! creationists lost their move last year to put an ‘evolution is only a theory’ disclaimer in all biology books.)
The bill was passed unanimously, but they also voted to send it to committee for revision - the committee apparently has pretty much said they’ll dump the amendments before sending it back.
Here’s the local scoop from the Daily Disappointment (hope this works, it’s really long): [Moderator Note: excessively long link deleted]
I vote for panties in a wad. Might as well, unless you’re doing something more interesting?
The adage “Knowledge is Power” is incorrect. The correct formulation is “Knowledge that other people don’t have is Power”. - The Donald

Religion may be the opiate of the masses in the opinion of Karl Marx, but that’s hardly a “given” that everyone agrees to.
Any truth to the rumor that as a counterbalance, all Bibles in Oklahoma will be required to include the phrase: “Hey, you don’t really believe this mumbo-jumbo, do you?”
Dave, any chance you can edit redtail’s post so that page-stretching link disappears?
Anyway, this is nothing new, just a bunch of religious right nuts trying to stick their fallacies into educational literature.
Or, in the not-so-controversial languaget that now more accurately represents my views: A group of religious believers are attempting to insert their faith, against Constitutional Law, into school textbooks.
I sold my soul to Satan for a dollar. I got it in the mail.
I have no objection to teaching that God created the heavens and the earth etc. etc. IN SUNDAY SCHOOL. In science class, however, we teach science.
Damn straight ,Matt!!
Like I said in the ten commandments thread, there is absolutely no justification, constitutionally OR Biblically, for legislating the comfort and convenience of one religion. because–get real, fellow Christians–that’s what it boils down to, right? Making the schools do what should be OUR job, to make OUR lives more comfortable?
Well, I have yet to see a debate.
Move this to The Pit…
Or to the Left Behind board, where you might find someone willing to think Oklahoma is a keen place to raise a family…
(Can you mods do that? That would be so cool!)
Yer pal,
Satan
Forward one of our threads to another UBB board? Nope. Maybe in the next release (just as soon as they fix all the bugs). But I am a bit surprised that none of our resident creationists have popped up to talk about how great this is. Maybe they’ve learned that we will ask them questions and expect them to back up their claims… (Hey, I can hope!)

Just for the record, the official postistion of the Catholic Church is that eveloution is “more than a hypothosis”. YOu won’t find many Catholics in Olklahoma, in any case.
