All righty, I was sitting here trying to edit my latest story and chat with twickster when all of a sudden my huge tomcat Ash leaps into my lap and snuggles up like a nursing baby to my chest and proceeds to go to sleep. Now my left arm is pinned against the desk and my fingers are going to sleep. Typos increase hundredfold in my story. The big baby.
I mentioned it to twickster who tells me that she has a hunk of purring fur in her lap as well.
So I wonder how many of us dopers are trying to write deep, coherent things for all posterity around, through and over purring cats. Should we start a support group for sufferers of cat induced carpal tunnel syndrome?
They know better than to get between me and a keyboard.
I have several pictures of my wife, though, with a cat draped across her lap, another having taken possession of her mouse arm, and a third smeared across the back of the chair like someone slopped her there with a butter knife…
My wife’s gotten pretty good at typing one handed. She hates to disturb them when they look so comfortable… sigh…
Mine (Hanna) does that too. She lays right across my mouse arm and then it falls asleep. When I can’t stand the pain anymore, I nudge her awake and she’ll move to my other arm. Then she starts the whole bath routine, like I’m not even here!
When I read things I’ve written and posted with a cat on my arms, I notice a lot of typos.
My other two cats aren’t as bad; Abby will get in my lap but she doesn’t drape herself across my arms. If I move even an inch, she jumps off right away. Bo rarely jumps in my lap when I’m at the computer. But Hanna gets up and just turns into a lump of cat fur. She will lay for hours if I let her.
I have this too - two cats, and two dogs, who seem to think it’s their duty in life to slow down my posting. One of them does try to make up for lying on my arm by doing random typing of their own…
Annie has decided that she likes to jump in my lap while I’m at my desk and working on the computer. Loud purrs, head butts to my hands, and plenty of twisting around to either get comfortable or get my attention. There’s the occasional meow too, especially when I’m typing; almost as if she is saying, “Hey, forget that. I need a full body massage here!”
But it’s not just the computer. If I’m on the phone, sometimes she will sit up, still purring, and bat at the phone as I’m speaking into it. Not always the best thing to have happen, especially with business calls.
Denver watches Annie do all this and he is starting to do it too. I may not be posting much that is spelled correctly and/or is coherent in the future if Annie and Denver keep this up.
Jake and Scout don’t really climb into my lap, and Scout generally restricts herself to twining around my legs while I’m on the computer.
Jake, however, likes attention, as much attention as possible. He will jump up on the table walk over to me, then either stand or lie in front of the laptop. This requires that I either type over or under him, after the appropriate amount of petting, of course.
My cats will occasionally lie on my wireless keyboard if I’ve laid it aside so I can just scroll with the mouse and read posts, as if to say, “Yes, I’ll let you read…”
Conan has been known to drape himself across my leg while I’m online and fall asleep, usually about the time I realize that I need to go to the bathroom.
My cat isn’t that social. She’ll seep on the desk in front of my SOs monitor, or on his chair if he’s not using it, but she’ll never sit on our lap. She won’t sleep on my desk because it’s covered in way too much stuff. She won’t even stay in our arms very long to be petted. She does, however, spend a lot of time on her back on the floor, meowing for belly rubs. Just don’t pick her up!
Muffy enjoys sitting on my lap while I am at the computer. Gigi at times comes by, purrs and parades back and forth on the table looking for attention. Ilene likes to attack the evil cursor on the screen. Larry, Moe and Curly just come by on their way to the cat ledge on the window. Blanchie is computer illiterate.
I don’t let my cats on my lap when I am working at the PC, but they both seem to love to jump onto my desk as I’m working, just to scare the hell out of me!
If my 10-yr old Siamese mutt Sheba isn’t trying to climb on my laptop, she’s leaning her (rather large) butt on the back of my head as she sits on the back of the sofa while I work on my computer. I’m always having to pick her up and re-arrange her, as it were.
I have a picture, I do believe…of little Siam a few months ago on my laptop … lessee, ah, here it is:
T.H.E. Cat is still a lonely kitten(abandoned by the next-door neighbors) and will not rest unless he can sit on our laps, or at least rest a paw on our arms.
The rest of the time he spends hunting and killing socks.
