Oh, the humanity (and everything else captured on those old newsreels)

I just saw that AP and British Movietone have uploaded (or are in the process of uploading) a huge amount of old newsreel footage onto YouTube. According to this New York Times article, we’re talking 17,000 hours and 550,000 videos huge.

To get you going, here’s a classic, taken from the article - “World Shocked By Kidnapping Of Lindbergh Baby!

As a sucker for this type of stuff, I’ll say again - thank God there was no Internet when I was young and was in the process of ‘building’ my life. In fact, I don’t know how the ‘kids’ today can resist. There are just too many distractions. But that’s another thread.

British Pathé put their stuff up last year as well - Here’s one of Gandhi’s visit to London in 1931 where the narrator goes on and on about Gandhi’s unusual appearance but doesn’t bother to mention why he’s there!

The World’s Fair newsreels and years in review are always good.

British Pathe can be streamed at Netflix.
