Ok, plain and simple, Tell me I didn’t hear FOX just Blasphamize (SP) the Simpsons with the words “Last season” with the newest ad for Season 16!? ((sorry I couldn’t find my interrobang key))
We can only hope.
But are you sure it wasn’t something like, “Last season on the Simpsons, Homer acted like a braindead monkey, but if you think that was funny, wait until this season!”?
Oh my, I hope it is the last season. But I doubt it. Matt Groening and others have said that The Simpsons will continue as long as it’s making money.
Wow, usually people don’t start crapping in Simpsons’ threads until the 3rd or 4th post.
But I don’t blame you folks, I guess I’d want it cancelled too if someone forced me to watch it, which must be your situations. Otherwise, it’s be pretty stupid to want it to be cancelled.
It’s not that they’re being forced to watch it - it’s that the half hour reserved for The Simpsons could be used for some other fine … er … programming of the sort Fox is known and loved for.
If it is, I won’t shed any tears. No offense to its more devoted fans or anything but sixteen years is a hell of a long run… has any other primetime network show ever lasted this long?
Gunsmoke was on for 20 years.
Is The Simpsons #2?
Nope. According to this site, Lassie is #2 at 19 years. The Simpsons is next, followed closely by Law and Order (based on the date span, not the number of episodes).
I hope it is the last season. I really do like The Simpsons, but these last seasons have just sucked so terribly. I want such a great show to end on a positive note, not have everyone be like “Oh thank OG THAT show is over. It sucks so much!”
I haven’t watched a recent Simpsons episode for two or three years now. I can tell by the commercials how horrible they are (sometimes I catch some shows from the last few seasons in re-runs).
It’s just sad that after so many great seasons, it’s faded to mediocrity. It has the potential to be great, but it hasn’t been for years. That’s what gets me.
I thought the Simpsons went off the air just after it crossed over the peak of its greatness: after its ninth season.
What? You say some show supposedly called “The Simpsons” is still on the air?
horrified
fingers in ears I’m not listening! I can’t hear you! Blah! Blah! Blah!
Yup, the Simpsons: nine great seasons. I’m so glad the creators had the foresight to end the show on a high note, before it started to suck ass and become a parody of itself.
The last couple of seasons of The Simpsons have ‘sucked’ only compared to the brilliance of the early years. Compared to any other TV shows of that type, or compared to anything else FOX is likely to put on to replace it, it’s still sheer genius. Get some perspective. Judge it not against its past, but against other current shows. It’s still very good.
I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, a bad episode of the Simpsons beats a good episode of Friends or Seinfeld any day of the week.
Even the first season.
I agree with Sam.
I only saw about 2 or 3 episodes last season but they were some of the funniest I’ve ever seen (the one where Homer poses as a robot has one of the highest overall laugh ratios of any Simpsons episode.)
If this next season is that good I pray that they don’t cancel it.
I don’t find the Simpsons funny at all anymore. Not compared to itself, and not compared to anything else on the box. “Sheer genius”? Please. Geniuses know when to stop.
And getting stabbed through one’s hand would be better than being stabbed through both hands…but either way, you end up in gut-wrenching pain.* Being “less bad than the alternative” doesn’t automatically equal “good.”
*Hey, it was the best analogy I could think up on short notice. So sue me.
Have you watched the Godfather recently, by any chance?
Every new unfunny episode of The Simpsons increases the odds that when I watch the show in syndication, I’ll see an unfunny episode (or rather, I’ll change the channel). The odds are probably higher than fifty percent already. It’s not like I want to ruin your fun for the hell of it.
To get back to the OP, the Simpsons was renewed in January 2003 for two more years, which brings it through the end of the upcoming season. When the voice actors settled their salary dispute earlier this year, there were reports that they made a deal for four more seasons.
