Ohio wants your drivers license to view online porn

Pretending kids didn’t have (or see, or even learn about) sex until adulthood in the past is harmful. I refused to play that moronic fucking game when it came to my kids, and had frank discussions with them regarding sex, including what they were going to see when they inevitably checked out porn, and how your typical offerings online were a skewed representation of what “real” sexual relationships were like.

ETA: I see you addressed talking to kids about it after I started this response. I do agree that’s a good approach, but not sure how that squares with the comment I quoted above …

Yes, I talked frankly to my kids as well.

Lots of, “Oh, god Ma, not this again” but, say it, I did. As plain as I could.

I was extra pointed with my son, as I didn’t want him egaging in felonius behavior. We were much more concerned as to what was on computer archives and what may be tracking us then.
And all of those places asked your age.

Yep, I know its easy to find and watch.
Heck, a good TV premium can get some risque movies.

My problem is someone specifically making porn for Teens. Thats wrong, anyway you slice it.

(As to “waiting til you’re an adult” I meant to buy porn, alcohol, get a drivers lisc., get in a club you have to wait til you’re of age. Sorry, I didn’t make those laws)

Yeah. On a fairly regular basis the loal news will report that a man was arrested for pretending to be a teen girl online in order to get nude photos of teen boys. Once he had enough, he would reveal that his true identity and demand more photos and videos in exchange for not sending the stuff he already had to the boy’s friends and family.

Additionally, any minor making porn of themselves to give to somebody they know and trust can and likely will be charged with production of child pornography if the files or the existence of the files becomes known to authorities.

I was able to get porn when I was under eighteen. Lessee, I am now fifty so that would be at least thirty three years ago. That was before the internet. Now, you need to either know how to defeat bliocking and tracking software, or find a smartphone or laptop without that software. Somehow, I don’t think any of this is too difficult.

Oh, and almost nobody actually buys porn anymore. With just a little effort, anybody can find porn on the net they can watch and download for free. With a tiny tiny bit more effort, you can find sites where you can watch and download pirated copyrighted material also free. Before anybody objects that those sites and the material on them are filled with viruses and malware, I have not found this to be true. Additionally, a properly set up computer and browser will both block viruses and malware and warn you if a file you attempt to download has them.

What’s wrong with that? My parents let me and my sisters try their drinks; we hated them all. Advocaat was the worst, I still can’t stand it.

Alcopops and cider in the park are the gateway to alcohol.

This is exactly what I’m worried about. I keep hearing that this is what mainstream porn is like now; this is what is being normalised. And the porn actresses pretend to enjoy acts that are at best meh and at worst painful, so girls think these things are supposed to be pleasurable and there is something wrong with them if they don’t enjoy it.

I’m a woman. I don’t watch porn - I imagine there is some I could enjoy, but it seems like way too much trouble to try and find it. Twenty years ago () an ex showed me some porn videos, and I just found it boring (I think he purposely choose the most vanilla videos as an introduction). What you described just sounds sad.

Well, mostly its made for men, by men. Playing into their fantasies, I guess.

That’s the issue. It’s fantasy. Its fake.
No very young boy needs this, easily.

The harder it is for them to access it the better.
Need a lisc. Good
Need a credit card. Good.

ETA…do not give kids alcohol. It’s bad for their brains.

We all got our licenses at 16. It is a progressive state.

Not as many get lisc at 16 anymore.

But yeah. 16 is w-aaaa-y older than 12 or 13.

AIUI very few people actually pay for porn movies. The small percentage that do, have a very large influence on the content. They seem to want verbal abuse, choking and spitting, However, there is lot of other porn of many varieties on the web. The best IMO includes people who are enjoying themslevs a great deal, treating each other with respect, and smiling a lot.

I am not sure how many women watch porn these days. Has anybody got any numbers?

Nah. Figure out what you want and use the proper seacrh terms.

Yeah. As I have said before, one of my ex’s liked to watch man on man porn. I still find that preferable to having sit through Gone With The Wind or Far And Away.

I agree. The female performers consent. But they are clearly just doing it for the money. If it ever gave them pleasure, that time is long past.

Yes, most porn is made for heterosexual men. Again, there are woman owned porn companies making porn aimed at heterosexual women.

Again, very few people actually buy porn anymore. That small number of men make up %100 of the target market for mainstream movies. They want verbal abuse of women, choking, and spitting. That is certainly not my fantasy. I rather doubt it is the fantasy of most heterosexual men.

What exactly do you mean by this? I would not say this applies to all porn.

They won’t need a credit card. They won’t need a license. The law would make it harder to access porn sites that follow US law. The majority of sites on the web, regardless of content, do not. I have no idea what percentage of porn sites are not hosted in the US. They do not follow US law. They have no need to comply with this particular law.

talking about Ohio, wasn’t it there where police officers were taking women’s phones and scrolling through them for nude pictures?

Yeah. Movies are unrealistic and fake, but we have real life to compare to so we know it’s fake. Young teens have nothing to compare to; they don’t know what’s normal or what most people enjoy, so it’s going to make more of an impression. What I hear is young men trying these things - choking, spitting, slapping - on their partners without even asking, because they think it’s normal. Also, I know a guy who says a couple of his partners asked him to choke them, and he wasn’t comfortable doing it but didn’t want to say no. AFAIK choking is dangerous and you should never do it.

I’d like to make it harder, at least for under 16s. Dunno if this law will do that. I think kids are less tech-savvy than people think. They aren’t necessarily going to find a vpn or go to lots of effort, but they might go to the foreign site instead if it pops up on google.

Pot is much worse, and that’s what American kids are using instead thanks to the high drinking age.

I wonder why?

I think the last time I saw an actual porn movie was at a party where we were playing with chatroulette, and it didn’t involve any of that stuff thank goodness, just bad acting.

I found some numbers for the UK. I’m surprised the number of men who have ever watched porn is so low, I would have guessed at least 90%. For women, it says 53% have ever watched it, and 15% watch it at all frequently, rising to 35% of under 30s.

I suspect the ‘made by men, for men’ is the main issue here.

The state government could order ISPs to block foreign porn sites, I guess?

Make it mysterious and hard to find, and they’ll seek it out…

I don’t think finding, downloading, installing and using a VPN is that complicated. Even if it were, I would be stunned if directions were not easily found online.

As you said, finding a site that does not folllow the laws of the United States is just a matter of using Google or other search engines.

That sounds likely.

First, that would require the government to find an effective way to identify foreign porn sites. Then, they would need to find a way to block them. Neither is easy- especially if you want to allow medical sites which will use words for various body parts, have drawings of body parts, and may even have photographs of breasts and genitals. Additionally, if people visiting the blocked foreign porn sites are over eighteen, they may complain to officials about it. Some will no doubt be too embarassed to come forward. Not everybody will have that problem.

There are two kinds of men. Those who watch porn and those who lie about it.

While this law wouldn’t stop anyone from accessing porn, I wouldn’t be surprised if, someday in the coming years, we get phones that use AI to detect inappropriate images and block them from being shown unless the user is 18+ as determined during phone setup. The AI tech is already getting there (used, for instance to help prevent people from making naughty images with AI generators).

Say “All phones on mobile carriers in Ohio must use TeenGuard”, require people to display proof of age when they set up a device, require a biometric check to get past TeenGuard to prove the user is 18+ and that would likely cut down significantly on access since phones are most people’s primary means of web access these days. Plus blocking stuff like texting/Snapchat/etc nudes or filming yourself with your partner or other means of putting naked people on your screen.

This isn’t to say that it’s fool-proof since there’s numerous obvious other ways to access porn but it would be much more significant than just making people pick another website. I’m also not advocating for this at all but the point is that you’re not going to stop people from watching the oceans of adult content by telling the ocean “Stop doing that” – blocking it would have to come at the display end and telling the device itself “Stop showing that”.

About half of the Youtube ad reads I see these days are for either NordVPN or ExpressVPN. They’re mainly marketed as letting you use location-spoofing to watch geolocked shows on streaming services, but I can easily see it pivot to “check out the websites your government doesn’t want you to see”.

I have no idea where various porn sites are located or even how you would find that out. But if you just did an ordinary Google search for “woman f**ks dog” I have heard you can view all you want. I recommend private browsing if you actually try it. Heck, images occasionally show up showing bestiality if the search is just too close. “Doggy style”, “horse cock”, “sex on the farm”, etc

This does sound like it could be the future.

I can’t imagine that a law in Ohio is going to stop anyone out of Ohio from creating and promoting porn, and it’s currently awfully easy to pretend to be “not from Ohio”. Or over 18, for that matter. It’s already coming for little kids to steal credit cards and buy stuff online. And teens are often weak at thinking about consequences. “Borrowing” someone’s ID is pretty easy, too.

But locking a phone might work.

When i was a girl scout, i remember once of the girls pulling out her older brother’s stash of dirty magazines to share with the troop. When i had kids in the Internet era, i just assumed they (especially my son) would find online porn, and that was part of the sex talks we had with them. With current technology, i really think that’s all you can do.

We leaned into the importance of enthusiastic consent, which both our kids bought into. And i honestly think that avoids a lot of potential problems porn can create.

I never said hide it and make it mysterious.

Theres a way to talk to kids to explain what it is. Never show them some. I think it universally illegal to show porn to minors. Please, please don’t do that.
There’s no right reason to watch porn with your minor children. Ever.

I said I don’t want it made for teens. Promoted or advertised to children. Or santioned as a legal thing to do.

I’m sure I don’t need worry this might happen.

This does seem likely, and possibly good, though I think it would be much better to have a graduated scale where some images/videos became available at 16 rather than going from zero to hardcore everything at 18.

It could also block kids from various social media sites until they reach the legal age, which would help prevent grooming.

Porn would still be available on laptops etc, but that’s easier for parents to monitor.

This really does sound good, since it’s so very easy to share digital images without consent and upload them for all of the world to see. Though maybe it will become less of an issue now AI can fake it so easily.

I wonder if AI porn will be better or worse? It could more convincingly fake enjoyment, and it would not be limited by real life constraints on feasibility or ethics of various acts, and could include beings and characteristics that don’t exist in real life.

AIUI most online grooming takes place on sites that are all ages or meant specifically for kids. OTTOMH Minecraft and other games that can be played with or against strangers online all have that problem. If you are playing an oline game as part of a team, being able to sned text messages to other team members and talk to them on your headset is of great strategic value. Female gamers of all ages report being hit on like crazy as soon as they speak into their microphone.
