FFIII / VI (take your pick! :p). Bar none the game I played the most on my SNES.
Second place tie is Super Metroid and Zelda: Link to the Past.
Third place is for wimps.

Zombies Ate the Neighbors! Used to have four hour marathon games of that damn thing, and finally beat it! (The end tour is pretty amusing). I know I didn’t find all of the secret levels, though. And sure, you -could- skip to later levels with the password function, but if you wanted to survive the late ones, you had to stock up on weapons in the early ones. (More monster potion, please!!!)
One of the greatest late-night multi-player games ever. My friends and I would spend hours playing this. Unfortunately I no longer have my SNES. Is there a comparable game for N64 or PS2 out there?
Mario Cart and StarFox. I only have about four games, but I still play these two all the time.
I think there is something akin to a consensus here.
And I have to agree. There have been great games on every platform (wel, leaving aside the really minor ones) but the SNES was the best. There was a conjunction of technology, innovation, and expectations that may never be equalled again.
It still loses out to the PC, though.
It’s available on Super NES too, on one cartridge with Tetris. I have it right here.
I’ve never tried Mariokart or Mario Paint, but love all other Mario games, as I’ve said before. Can anyone recommend/explain them to me? I assume MarioKart is a racing game, but Mario Paint? Is it an, um, painting game???
Tales of Phantasia - the only SNES game with voice acting.
Final Fantasy VI - they’ve never been able to beat this one.
We nearly made it a month before I had to copy and paste this.
Super Mario Kart but more specifically the 3rd course in (ghost valley I think) was perfection. Nothing beats a super-start with Donkey Kong followed by a perfect run powersliding all the way without braking once. It makes my fingers twitch just thinking about it.
Stunt Racer FX again, 3rd course in with the bike and you’re in the zone.
Street Fighter II Just perfect, I used to stay up all night smoking the bong and staring at the screen till my contact lenses dried up and fell out, convinced me and my buddy were telepathically linked. Did you ever start a game where you were both Ken and you both pull of the exact same moves at the same time about 7 moves in a row with the two Kens in perfect symmetry? scary stuff.
Killer Instinct edgy and a real hard one to memorise everyones kick ass combos.
I also liked GODS but perhaps the Amiga version was better I can’t remember.
Best. Console. Ever.
As for my favorite games, you gotta go with the classics - Super Mario World, Zelda, MarioKart (which I think beats all other incarnations), Donkey Kong Country.
I remember back in the day (c. 1992) a friend of mine had a Nintendo, so naturally I spent a lot of time at his house. When I got a SUPER Nintendo for Christmas I was initially very disappointed because I’d never heard of it.
A beat from Mario Paint has been stuck in my head for nine or ten years. (Oompa, oompa, dit dit dit…dit do dit do dit do.)
Sure, the system had its share of dud games (Mario Time Machine, anyone?) but after SNES, it all became about purty graphics and unwieldy controllers.
Mariopaint, nineiron, was a very odd, very unique ‘game’ that had several different aspects. You could compose music, draw pictures, play minigames, do all sorts of stuff.
It was absolutely unlike any console game I’ve seen before or since.
Super Nintendo is the only game system we have in our house. We still play Mario Kart all the time. In college we played it almost every night, for hours. If there were only 2 people we played all the Grand Prix’s in a row. It’s one of those rare games that you can play over and over and it’s still fun.
Also enjoy playing Goldeneye (multi-player) quite a bit, but it’s not a classic like Mario Kart.
Mariopaint used the SNES mouse. Was there any other game that used the mouse?
Ok, pretty much all I will say has been said but you know what? Poo on you!
Final Fantasy 3- I play that game at least once a year. I remember being like 8 and playing it everyday with my Dad and sister, one of the greatest family memories. The music, the story, the characters, the side quests. Nothing can beat that game! This is kind of sad but I have to admit it, I loved the characters so much that I teared up at some points.
Mario RPG- Classic! Great mix of rpg, mario, and pure fun! Princess hitting people with a frying pan, Mallow’s family mystery, and a parody of the power rangers!
Sailor Moon RPG- I don’t think it ever came to America but I downloaded a translated rom of it and I love it! Sailor Moon fan or not, it is a great game!
The DKC games- Classics!
Kirby Superstar- Hours of kirby fun!
Zelda- Duh!
Earthbound- I have balled up hatred 'till this day because Nintendo never released sequels in America That game is soooo much fun! I remember reading Nintendo Power for 5 years and it always said in the back “Earthbound 64 release date 1 year” or something! It always got bumped back and they never released it
Here is an example of what could be done using Mario Paint
Staring the Homestar Runner!
Was there an SNES goldeneye? The only one I know of (that I played to death) was the one for N64.
Wrong! You obviously haven’t played Star Ocean. Gets my vote as one of the tippity top games ever. Find a translation! An awesome RPG with tons of challenge and secrets. It’s a lot like Tales, but less linear.
Tales: The voice acting was cool, even if it wasn’t as complex as Star Ocean. The plot was a refreshing change of pace but the game was annoyingly linear and the enemy encounter rate was hair pullingly high. But it’s still on top, because this game had Klarth. That’s right, the diplomat, scholar, and sweetheart who’d ask a demigod to bend time and space for him so he could check up on his girlfriend of your group is tall, covered in tatoos, and dressed in leather. He looked like he could take your head off with his bare hands, but twapped things with a book. Sweet.
Terranigma: Cool main character, original story, and you really had to feel bad for Ark towards the end of the story. Plus, the gameplay was so much fun, and the animation so smooth. It’s hard to believe this game is the sequel to the lackluster Illusion of Gaia.
FF6: Everyone’s already said why.
Chrono Trigger: It was all about the characters. They were all so cool. And there was just the right mix of adventure, humor and action in this game. And that moment when Chrono dragged himself up to fight Lavos alone…back in middle school when playing for the first time, I admit I was holding my breath.
Yoshi’s Island: It’s in crayon people! How can it not be at the top?
Harvest Moon: This game has an inexplicable addicting power. Or maybe it’s just me.
 I’m an impostor! I just checked and the console in the lounge is a N64. Ah, shucks. Mario Kart still rocks, though.
nineiron: Mario Kart is indeed a racing game, but what makes it really great in multiplayer mode (appart from the fun courses) is that you can play all sorts of nasty tricks to your opponents, like firing turtle shells, dumping banana peels and zapping them with lightning.
And bumping them off the edge. Mwahahahaha! Have a nice trip!
OK, because of what I read in this thread, I ordered a copy of Mario Kart from half.com.
It’s freaking awesome.
indeed. starfox rocked my elementary school world. that, super mario world, the donkey kong games, and mario kart.
ah…the memories…
