OK, I Give Up... Anybody ELSE Have the NFL Figured Out This Year?

I’m still scratching my head over the Giants’ loss to Dallas on Sunday. Sure, Dallas had nothing to lose and everything to win, but New York was just… awful. I kept asking myself if this was the same team that steamrolled Seattle last week.

A lot of people were talking about the Giants being the best team in the NFC (if not the NFL) before last Sunday’s game. Talking up NYG is one of the worst things you can do for them. When the Giants fly under the radar, they come up and beat an undefeated team in the Super Bowl. When they’re spoken of as possible Super Bowl contenders, they fumble, pick, and incomplete pass their way to yesterday’s news.

As for the rest of the league, I dunno. The Bills and Panthers have pretty much proven their mediocrity this season. New Orleans was expecting to have a much better year than they are. The Chefs were the last team in the NFL to lose a game. Even the Indianapolis Colts are a question mark. The only team that seems to be performing consistently well is the Ravens, but Atlanta embarrassed them last week.

So no, I don’t get it either.

I think part of this is some quirks in how the scheduling worked out this year. The two worst divisions are probably the two wests, and they play each other. That means that all the teams in these divisions play 10 of their 16 games against each other.

Compare that to Pitt/Bal. They have to play each other twice, New England, the Jets, the Falcons, the Saints, and the Bucs. All the best teams play each other a bunch of times, so nobody is going to run the table.

I don’t think the picture’s that muddled, Astorian.
It’s a pretty safe bet that the AFC champion will be one of these five teams: New England, the Jets, Pittsburgh, Baltimore, and my beloved Colts.
In the NFC, it’s obvious that Atlanta and Philly are emerging as powerful teams. this is the best ball I’ve seen Vick play & if the Eagles keep it up, they will reach the Super Bowl. You can’t count out the Giants & Saints, either. I remain unimpressed by Green Bay and Chicago.
