I can tell you it’s particularly easy to live elsewhere if your work is online. That includes gambling, although that carries certain risks. In Thailand, online gambling is illegal, and it does not matter if the gambling site is located elsewhere. You may think it would be easy to keep that quiet, but there have been several cases where neighbors became suspicious of these foreigners having no visible means of support and so alerted authorities, who investigated and uncovered the activity. Or they didn’t keep quiet about it but somehow pissed off their neighbors, who promptly turned them in for revenge. Even if it’s a legal activity, working it is illegal without a work permit granted from the government. I’ve known a lot of writers and editors who got popped for that, living in Thailand on a Tourist or even Education Visa while in reality working. Best to avoid if possible. Learn the local laws and try to follow them.
What did Obama do to make you leave?
You mean Bush, who was President until 2009.
Please do tell me about this “impending fascism” of which you speak. Has President Trump declared Martial Law, suspended the Constitution, dismissed Congress, suspended elections or even threatened to do these things? Has he said “I’ve got a pen and a phone” meaning “I’ll do what I damn well please”? (Oh, no, that’s right, Obama said that.) No one said a word when Obama said this, but just imagine if President Trump said, “Screw all of you, I’ve got a pen and a phone and I’m gonna do what I want”. The reaction would be that Trump has finally shown his “true colors” and that has has declared himself to be DICTATOR of the US. But he hasn’t done this, not even close.
OMG, people! The 2018 midterms are right around the corner and Trump can be voted out of office in just two short years after that. You sound like “ALL IS LOST, America is gone for good!” Do you really believe Trump is going to suspend the elections? Please tell me some concrete examples of this “growing fascism” that I hear of. Are you really afraid that you won’t be able to vote in November?
You could also go to Amsterdam Island or its neighbor Île Saint-Paul, which are also antipodal to the US. Your ability to speak French will help there too and the climate is probably better since they’re closer to the tropics.
Obama was elected on November 4, 2008, about a decade ago. True he had no power at the time, but had promised to “fundamentally change America” while running for president. I was wondering if there was something that Budget Player Cadet feared was going to happen during the up coming Obama administration. During the 2008 campaign Obama made several campaign promises, perhaps some of which might have scared BPC out of the country.
Bush had ruined the US enough during his first seven years in office so that by the time 2008 rolled around he was just biding his time, just waiting to leave the presidency.
We’d have to ask BPC to know for sure.
November 4, 2008 was less than a decade ago.
interesting links, I’m not surprised this is happening but I hadn’t heard of it before.
Yes, just ignore all that I said.
I said ABOUT a decade ago. When someone says “a decade ago”, you think they mean exactly 3650 days ago? I also said Obama was announcing what he was going to do as President during the summer of 2008 (a decade ago) during his campaign. Maybe BPC didn’t want to experience what Obama said he was going to do as President and left the country. A lot of Trump haters were threatening to leave the country long before he actually assumed power.
Maybe BPC will let us know by replying.
Doesn’t really matter. Whether they left because Reagan was President, or Bush, or Obama, or whoever, I never met anyone with a valid political reason. I left the US simply because I’ll live wherever I damned well please, and at the time that place was Thailand.
I can request to get posted at one of our overseas offices like Hong Kong or Frankfurt but I like living in the US. Plus, I’d need to pick up the language. I know Spanish fluently, but I’ve been to Madrid and it’s more or less worse than LA.
You can get by just fine in Hong Kong with English.
You’re right! United States Antipodes
As a Trump supporter I want to know, are you people really serious?
Do you think other countries dont have their own issues?
Plus quite frankly, local politics is where its at. Your city, county, and state are where the major issues affecting you are. For example, Trump has nothing to do with how your city is planning on rezoning some local area. Trump has nothing to do with your local school districts bond issue. Trump has nothing to do with a change in state labor laws ( for example: Missouri has a big upcoming vote on right to work laws).
This is the same fallacy as bothsidesdoitism. Just because every country is not perfect does not mean that every country is equally imperfect in the exact same ways.
In no other nation does a person with so little intelligence and so much mental illness have so much power.
I ain’t going anyfuckingwhere.
Not Trump and not the US, but Brexit was it for me. Buh-bye UK. I’ve lived in the UK and Netherlands and it is going to be the Netherlands now. Brexit has made the UK a sad, ugly place and, unlike Trump, this is forever rather than 4 years. I have several friends who have also left, two more who are currently leaving, another few in academia who are looking.
It hurts like hell because England is my home. But there is no fight to be fought, no going down with this ship. They wouldn’t even let me vote on Brexit because the incompetent fools had lost my registration form when I last lived there. When I called the council and the consulate they tried to tell me I wasn’t British (“and why did I even think that, hmm?”) I’m British because my birth certificate says I’m British and I sound English and I like vinegar on my chips and a good cup of tea and rainy walks in the hills and I genuinely think queuing is important and I’m British because I know I am in my bones, but I can’t live there and they obviously don’t want me anyway.
It was their feeling, not mine, but if you want a justification I’ll point to the convictions involving multiple people who support Trump and colluded with Russia, that the Republican party does what it can to suppress votes, to the propaganda station that is Fox, and to Trump’s continuing declarations that only he can save America from its enemies in the press corps, immigrants, and elsewhere, that he thinks racists and murderers are “fine people” as long as they are white.
Not to mention that he’s started multiple trade wars and given North Korea more than it ever dreamed of.
Sure, it could be thwarted by people in the Midwest voting for the Democratic party, but to quote Dark Helmut “good is dumb.”
I…ah…hm…well, 3652 - 3653 days, right? I mean, 3650 is still a tad short, right?
