The boy down the hall [sub]rat bastard[/sub] has accused me of having repetative MP3 playlists. My hallmates basically concurred. It’s basically true- I have a habit of not switching lists for long periods of time. That it’s true makes it all the more aggrivating. Bah. No big deal, really, but I have decided that I’d like to make things a litle different.
So… give me a short list of very different songs, all of which you would listen to on your own volition.
(Since I bet you’ll show up here, hello to Robot Arm. ;))
You asked for it:
[li]the “morning” passage from the Peer Gynt Suite[/li][li]90% of Elton John’s material[/li][li]Almost anything from Bob Seeger’s Greatest Hits[/li][li]“The Song Remembers When” (Tricia Yearwood)[/li][li]“I Hope You Dance” (LeeAnn Womack)[/li][li]“The Living Years” (Mike & the Mechanics)[/li][li]“Something to Believe In” (Poison)[/li][li]“Fire and Rain” (James Taylor)[/li][li]About 70% of Bette Midler’s material, especially the newer stuff[/li][li]Most of the Garth Brooks “Double Life” collection[/li][li]“No Matter What” (Boyzone)[/li][li]“Summer Song” (Chad and Jeremy)[/li][li]“I Can See Clearly Now” (Johnny Nash)[/li]
Is that sufficiently eclectic?
You want eclectic? We got your eclectic right here:
**The Bobs ** just about anything, but especially “Meat on the Moon”
Linda Ronstadt “Winter Light”
**The United States of America ** “Love Song for a Dead Che”
**Steve Earle ** “Copperhead Road”
**ZZ Top ** “Double Back”
**Tish Hinojosa ** “San Antonion Romeo”
**Jefferson Airplane ** “Good Shepherd”
**Gabor Szabo ** “Galatea’s Waltz”
**Stevie Ray Vaughn ** “Crossfire”
**Sergio Mendes & Brazil '66 ** “Cinnamon & Clove”
**Swingle Singers ** “1812 Overture”
**Janis Ian ** “Stars”
**Joan Baez ** “Lily, Rosemary & The Jack of Hearts”
and many et ceteras, all of which currently reside in my collection. (Except United States of America. Had the album for nearly 30 years, then sold it prematurely in a move less than 3 years ago.)
“Sometimes Love Just Ain’t Enough” by Patty Smythe and Don Henley
“Waterfalls” by TLC
“Shepherd Moon” by Enya
“Suite Sister Mary” by Queensryche
“Saxuality” by Candy Dulfer
“If I Close My Eyes Forever” by Lita Ford and Ozzy Osbourne
Of course, I’d have more in each category, but that’s about the most ecclectic mix I can think of at the moment.

Bryan Adams - Anything You Do, I Do It for You
Asian Dude - Ugly Girl (Chinese pop song)
Die Ärzte - Grotesksong (German punk)
These songs I have listened to today. Of course, there are many more, but each of these kinda represents a genre, so you can get an idea. Sorry, no country.

And from my anime list I suggest:

“Cocktails for Two” – Spike Jones and His City Slickers
“1812 Overture” – Tchaikovski
“Red Rubber Ball” – The Cyrkle
“They Can’t Take That Away from Me” – George & Ira Gershwin
“'39” – Queen
They Might Be Giants, definitely. Pick anything you like, but “We Want a Rock” is a personal favorite.
Gregorian chants are always good “What the #@!!?” fodder, particularly mixed with Blue Oyster Cult (I’d recommend “Nosferatu” here).
Loreena McKennit–“Marco Polo” for that Celtic/Middle Eastern feel.
If you can find a recording of the Corsairs doing “Irish Rover”, it would make a good addition. “We had three million bales/Of old nanny-goats’ tails/And four million barrels of stones”–it’s almost as surreal as TMBG.
“Swamp Music” by Lynyrd Skynyrd–southern rock about a howling dog.
“Go Get the Ax”–All I know is it dates from the early 20[sup]th[/sup] Century, and Bugs Bunny sang it right before his first encounter with Yosemite Sam. I don’t know where you’d find an MP3 (you could always get a midi and sing it yourself ), but the lyrics are downright freaky, and it will get stuck in everyone’s head.
“The Selkie’s Lament” by Linda King-Burdge (Lady Amber). Imagine the lead from Concrete Blonde playing a twelve-string guitar and singing about a magical exile, with a soprano singing descant. I doubt you’ll find this one online, but you might be able to get the CD by contacting her here.
Enough. Any more and you people might start thinking I’m weird.
OK, here’s some:
“The Pop Singer’s fear of the Pollen Count”, “National Express”, “Tonight We Fly” - The Divine Comedy
“Winter Wooskie”, “It Could Have Been A Brilliant Career”, “The Model”, “Seeing Other People” - Belle & Sebastian
Anything by Handsome Boy Modeling School, Husker Du, The Clash, The Go-Betweens, XTC or Robyn Hitchcock
“Buzzin’” - Asian Dub Foundation
“Unsatisfied”, “Here Comes A Regular”, “Never Mind” - The Replacements
“At Home He’s A Tourist”, “Return The Gift” - Gang Of Four
“Bring The Noise”, “Don’t Believe The Hype”, “Miuzi Weighs A Ton” - Public Enemy
“Block Rockin’ Beats”, “Setting Sun”, “Hey Boy, Hey Girl” - The Chemical Brothers
For jazz, I’d go with Miles Davis, John Coltrane, THelonious Monk,Eric Dolphy or Ornette Coleman
For classical, I’m partial to Bach
I’ll think of more, I’m sure.
Currently on heavy rotation at my place:
Neil Finn, “She Will Have Her Way”
Crowded House, “Fall At Your Feet”
