There were a lot of old-school Democrats (especially but not exclusively in the South) whose policy positions were pretty much indistinguishable from those of the GOP, but who remained Dems in name because they were enmeshed in the party power structure. They - and their core voting base - became increasingly out of step with the Democratic Party in the 70s. Most of the last remnants switched during the early Reagan era (see Frank Rizzo in Philadelphia for a notable example).
Nonetheless, it was the election of the Republican governor Rockefeller in 1966, who ran against staunch segregationist Democrats, that led to the state government supporting desegregation of the schools in Arkansas.
If only there was a concept for this, where Republicans had a plan of some sort to convince certain shitty people in former Confederate states who were still mad about the Civil War and Civil Rights movement to join their party in order to play grievance politics for the next fifty-plus years. It could be named by the region it predominately affected, like the Racist Realignment or the Terrorist Tactic (I had to shoehorn in the alliteration somehow).
Got to spread the wealth (literally, in this case). My dad was a small town lawyer in a town with <1,000 people and three grocery stores (yes, this was a long time ago (1960s and 1970s)). Mom always shopped all three.
I’d read Jeremiah 8:21 and say it proves God is black, so that means we need to treat his people better! (Then wait and watch the teacher’s head explode! )
At least seven large Oklahoma school districts said Friday they have no intention of showing a video of state schools Superintendent Ryan Walters discussing his state agency’s new Office of Religious Liberty and Patriotism, despite Walters saying doing so was required.
I just saw Walters interviewed on CNN. My understanding of Christianity doesn’t support being a rank asshole like this guy.
Actually, my understanding of the teachings of Jesus don’t support anything that today’s version of Christianity represents.
Kind regards,

Patriots are like Christians: the easiest thing in the world is to call yourself one or the other, or fly the flag, or wear a crucifix.
That’s it. After that, you’re done. You don’t even have to DO anything at all. Just wear the label or the jewelry.
I can’t find it now, but a couple of years ago, I made a lengthy post about what I called (IIRC) “convenience patriotism”. That phenomenon is what you’re talking about here.
I believe the triggering point for that post way back when was about those individuals who demanded football players perform a certain ritual to the demanders’ satisfaction or be “sent to Coventy” (fired, never hired for any job, etc.).
