In my search for an oyster sauce substitute for a nice Jewish boy, I found the above. Whether or not a valid substitute, it makes a mean beef and broccoli.
But I digress.
On the jar of Otafuku (fuku…just noticed that ) Okonomi there is a photograph of what looks like a slice of pizza covered with Okonomi sauce, shredded carrots and spinach.
What is it?
That would be Okonomiyaki, a delicious Japanese fritatta sort of thing. There’s a link to a decent recipe on that thread. Good stuff, kids and adults alike rave when I make it.
Hijack, when in Japan me and my Traveling partner made a great song about okonomiyaki…
sung in a surf song/beach boys style.
Ooookonomiyaki tonight!
oookonomiyakie tonight!, Thats right!
oookonomiyakie tonight!!!
thanks for the memory!
Thanks Mike, I’ll try that soon.
Glad I posted!
First time I was in Japan, I was told we were having what I thought was called “economy-yaki”. Yup, I thought it was cheap-ass teriyaki. I was pleasantly surprised when the omeletty-noodly thing arrived.
Aside: in Hong Kong, they have okonomiyaki flavor potato chips. Mmmmm.
My Japanese teacher taught us to make okonomiyaki. It’s very easy and delicious !
You beat me to it! I was so happy to know such a relatively obscure answer. And yes, okonomiyaki is yummy.
Thanks Anaamika. I’ll tell Mrs. Plant that it is endorsed by one of her fellow New Yorkers.
