The boss is back in town!

No, not Springsteen; my boss. Last night he and his wife finally made it back to the DC area from Houston, where they’d been stuck since Sunday because of the hurricane. He’s back at work today and has been digging through a mountain of emails; I was able to give him a quick rundown of the things our customer asked me about this week that he might hear about.

So, our customer is now able to bug him again instead of me, but – in some kinda crazy timing – this morning my grandboss (my boss’s boss, who used to be the program manager/my boss) asked if I’d help lead a proposal section that’s due at the end of the month…and also lead part 2 of the same response, which doesn’t have a due date yet. After asking her a few questions I determined that it’s not a huge lift, and it’ll get me involved with the type of proposal support I’d rather provide*, so I said yes. The customer just issued the request for proposals yesterday; the kickoff meeting is tomorrow morning.

That’ll keep me off the streets for a while.

*I’m gonna go all doggio and talk as if this will make sense to anyone else: despite a decade as a prop manager (partly with this company) and a prop writer (before I joined this company), since leaving BD for project management 4.5 years ago my prop support has been mostly writing resumes and past performance volumes. I hate doing resumes and PP (they’re entry-level prop writer tasks…I have soooo already paid those dues!!!), but I enjoy leading/am more than qualified to lead management volumes, so I’ve been trying to work my way into mgmt volume lead roles. I’ll have that role when my own contract is up for recompete later this year, but helping with this new prop will let me prove myself in that capacity a little sooner. The company knows me as a prop manager but most prop managers were never prop writers (let alone volume leads), so I’m still showing folks that I can do that part (and do it well).

In other news, we are finally getting a break from the humidity and triple-digit temps! There was a brief thunderstorm last evening: not as big as I would have liked, but enough that when I took the dog out at 7:30am it was only 72°F and not humid (and with a light breeze). I actually turned the a/c off, and had the windows open until lunchtime! It feels like months since I’ve been able to do that! Today’s forecasted high is only 90; right now (2pm) it’s only 87. I did have to turn the a/c back on about an hour ago, when the sun started hitting the front of the house, but it’s been sooo nice to not have to set the thermostat to 75 in order to keep the old heat pump from being overtaxed (it has run like a champ for the past 10 years, but I feel like it’s only a matter of time…another week like the one we just had could do it if I’m not careful).

I can’t believe my show is a week from today already! The next few days/this weekend will go by fast.

It was! The only mildly annoying thing now is that the cool “tile” flooring is no longer visible at all. But I know it’s in there, and I have pictures for proof.

Metal Mouse beat you to that joke on Saturday (and Husband BFF beat him to it on Thursday).

Very cool! Especially the Yellow Submarine: I’m a huge Beatles fan, and need to keep an eye out for that set. I also want to keep an eye out for the Beatles “art” set. In early June, a used Lego sales/trading store opened not far from me…I really need to get out there!

My list is in assembly order (I tried to include links to the completed set pics, but Imgbb is having a conniption):

  • 2023
    • Jazz Quartet
    • Eiffel Tower (discontinued [the small one])
    • Fallingwater (discontinued)
    • The Starry Night
    • Dried Flower Centerpiece
    • Santa’s Sleigh
    • Christmas Wreath
    • Christmas Tree
  • 2024
    • Jazz Club
    • Fender Stratocaster
    • Corvette
    • Grand Piano
    • R2-D2
    • The Globe
    • Retro Radio
    • Notre-Dame de Paris

Now that I look at the list, I guess there’s a bit of a music theme in there (especially this year’s builds). :notes:

I have no unassembled sets at the moment. Mine don’t tend to sit around for long, because I usually order them when I’m ready to start them (or will be ready to start them soon). The longest I’ve had a set sit around was just over a month: at the end of last year I knew I’d be ordering the jazz club, and also knew I wanted to start it in January. When I was on the Lego site in mid-November I saw that the jazz club was backordered and not shipping until February, so I ordered it then…and it wound up arriving right after Thanksgiving. I only have one table, and I use it to hold decorations during the holidays, so I had to wait until I un-decorated to start building that one.

My Lego habit is all my “nephew’s” fault (my BFFs’ son)… :joy:

Yes! And, something that took me forever to learn: longer commutes can be worth it. IOW, after several years I finally stopped “following” my jobs. It’s much less of a thing these days, when telework is so routine, but it took years to realize that living near where I “play” (i.e., DC) is way more important to me than living near where I work.

I tried giving carrots to Bailey a couple of times: she loved playing with them, but never actually ate them. I just wound up cleaning up shredded carrot.

Ha!

Rearranging furniture is what I do when I’m feeling the need for change but can’t afford – or don’t want – to move. My mother used to tease me about how my apartments looked different every time she visited. Significant rearranging in my current house is challenging, because it’s small and there aren’t many options, but every now and then I find a way to make some changes. I enjoy figuring out how to display my Lego sets once they’re done, because it usually involves moving them – and other things – around; that’s often enough to get ahead of the “change something!!1!” itch.

That’s all awesome news there Oopsie: the likely proposal gig for grandboss, the singing gig, break in the weather, the mountain of lego kits, and all the rest. You’re hittin’ on all cylinders now. Go Girl, go!

True. Somehow we’ll make the extra effort to drive 10 miles to work 5 times per week, but not the extra effort to drive to 10 miles to entertainment 1 weeknight and 1 weekend night = 2 nights a week. We save some gas, but destroy our social and entertainment life. I was the same way but got smarter later.

Move next door to the party (not into the middle unless you like puke on your car in the morning) and travel a bit more to work. As a bonus, that often sets you driving up counter-flow where the major rush-hour is going the other way versus you. Still trafficky, but not so bad. BTDT. Totally worth it.

Sheveled and launched off to have my lunch/breakfast, an Italian variation on a muffuletta, got my BB gift ribbon and a smidgen of groc, came home and had a nap while it boomed outside and rained a smidgen. Now I’m wastin’ time w ya’ll and about to empty the dishwasher after it’s been run, not before. D’oh! :man_facepalming:

I did find out the Doobie Brothers were rained out, so the gents enjoyed an evening at a nice dry pool hall in the next town over and all was well.

For a second I thought you worked in theater. Then I read more. Proposal manager?

Pilot Yes, always wise to run the dishwasher before unloading. I’ve been guilty of not unloading right away and then putting dirty stuff in with the washed. Unclean! And sorry your buds missed out on the Doobies, but a nice dry pool hall sounds better than a sorta-Woodstock.

Howdy Y’all! Stuff got did and we et at Jack’s. Actually went in and et. Then nappage, sloth, and day drinkin’ occured. I was a bit disconcerted earlier when I learned of the big scandal at the Nathan’s Hot Dawg Eatin’ Contest. It’s just gettin’ to the point where nuttin’ is sacred anymore. I needed to have an extra beerverage to calm down.

In other news, our new Priest, his wife, and son, are now settled in their temporary abode. They are rentin’ until they find suitable digs to buy. There was a letter from him in the weekly Parish newsletter askin’ for folks to email him to introduce themselves as folk are wont. I have begun comprisin’ an email to introduce OYKW and myself. I shall compose in a word doc., let it set a while, re-read and make any needed adjustments then do the actual email. I’m goin’ for a first impression here, so it should sound at least semi-sane, right?

MOOOOOOM I am glad to know that the Tobester is becomin’ a fart afficionado.

Hippie glad the first appointment went well. I am also a fan of early mornin’ appointments. That way I have the rest of the day for the all important RDOS activities.

Pilot sounds like you dodged a weather bullet by not goin’ to that concert. Glad you’re on the mend! A funeral rehearsal? How have I lived lo these many years without hearin’ of such a thing. Funny story about the raven and the golf ball.

An interesting interlude this afternoon. We agreed, along with a bunch of other residents, to let a group of ESL students practice on us. Almost all of them were from Kazakhstan. They’re not immigrants, they’re just here as part of an exchange grant. That’s one of the few parts of the world that I have little to no knowledge of, so it was a challenge.

I’ve learned a number of languages in my life, including French, Spanish and Portuguese, but those are all Romance languages and relatable to English to some extent. I also took Latin in high school. But I really struggled with the accents I was hearing. I talked to six people in all, and there were different skill levels. We managed to have conversations, but it didn’t help that my hearing in a room full of other people talking is marginal.

For the last round, one of the teachers (who was a very attractive Turkish woman) sat in with us. I swear she was flirting with me, which hasn’t happened in more years than I can recall. Anyway, it was kinda fun and kind of intimidating. I left with a headache.

cookie That sounds like a fascinating endeavor, to do the ESL stuff. And totally get leaving with a headache, it sounds exhausting.

swampy I’m sure you know this already, but send your welcome letter as a pdf or similar so’s it can’t be altered like a word.doc. Semi-sane is a good starting point. I try to stay there myself, without too much success.

But it’s not free. She’s getting it at the low end of its value, but not as a gift. The biggest problem is that BIL has pretty much ignored any kind of maintenance for the last year. However, even with the cost of what we’ve got to do, it’s still a good deal. Until it became BIL’s car 2 years ago, it was meticulously maintained.

It needed front rotors, and the rear rotors had to be machined. But brakes are kinda important. It also got a long-overdue oil change. I need to go get some wiper blades and once the windshield is replaced, it’ll pass inspection and can be registered.

Anyway, we’ve got it home for the moment. And next Firday, it will be registered to Daughter and SIL. And we’ll be done with it.

We went to Daughter’s house to put the new belt on her dryer. It wasn’t difficult per se but FCD struggled a bit, mostly because he had to lie on the floor to route it around the idler arm and the drive wheel. But it works, so yay! I told them they need to do smaller loads. If they break another belt, they can repair it themselves.

The rest of today is for chillage. We had a pasta bake for supper and the dishwasher just ended. My recliner beckons!

And a good late afternoon to everyone. Got my 1.5 miles of swimming in, so I honestly earned the small bag of potato chips I just devoured, dinner will be sometime later this evening. 92F outside, so no plans to do much else.

Pilot, Sticky Buns, you said it better to shoe than my feeble effort. To amend it, we are born with the family members we have; but we choose the family members (who might not even be related) that we want.

Sticky Buns, here’s hoping the PT leads to a better outcome. And love the cane decorations!!

FCM, never fun laying out money to fix up a car, the the other alternative, as you noted, is much worse. Hope it isn’t too expensive.

doggio, to borrow from an old but still-loved movie, “I’ve seen better organized riots”

Sam Mussabini in “Chariots of Fire”

rocky, hope the musical furniture moving ends up perfect (for you). Haven’t moved any of mine for 4-5 years now.

Preach it, Brother Pilot! My uncle gave me his old Ford Galaxy when I graduated College, that thing spent more time at the garage than moving me. Ended up replacing it with the neighbor’s Chevy Vega and figured I’d traded up.

VanGo, kvetch all you want. Probably better to wait for the weekend to mow (that’s what I am doing).

Oopsie, I don’t pretend to understand everything you’re doing, but if prop writing makes the work go along better, then I hope it works out for you. Fingers crossed that the show is a hit!

swampy, just remember, in your introductory message to New Priest, don’t mention your MMP-life, it may scar the poor man for life…

Cookie, that was a good thing you did and sounds like it was pretty successful. And being flirted with at our ages is a joy to be remembered (as long as the wife doesn’t find out…)

Getting close to dinner time, so all y’all take care.

No sit-ups today. My coccyx is sore from yesterday, as are my abdominal muscles. I did, however* get out for a walk for the first time in a week. 3.13 miles, and I made 3.22 mph. I consider anything over 3.1 mph to be excellent, so almost tree anna quatah is great.

I had a potted meat sandwich for lunch afterward.

I drive ZakBoy crazy with my holding unbuilt sets. His boxes are open within hours of the set arriving. Pooh Bear has been in the closet for over a year. Just haven’t felt the urge to build it yet. Even when I start the build, I do one, maybe two bags a day with days in between. To me, the build is the fun, so I tend to drag it out for a while.

I have finally learned to order when they come out though. Too many sets go very quickly to backorder.

The Spousal Unit has had a ‘blot’ on her hand for a couple of months (at least). She’s been putting various lotions and medicated ointments on it, but they didn’t help. The other day she said it looks like cancer. I told her she needs to see a doctor. She hemmed and hawed. Today she was seeing a patient who had had skin cancer in the past. Just a spot on his back. He said they didn’t know if it had spread, so they removed his lymph nodes. He told Wifey, RN she needs to get it checked out. I got a text from her today saying she has an appointment for next Thursday.

My Coolaroo roll-up shades for my bedroom windows came today. The one for the front room window should be here tomorrow (I think).

Wifey is exercising good judgment. Much benefit, both emotional and physiological, to getting it checked out. My dermatology PA has changed jobs and communities, so I’m on the hunt for a new person to do my annual skin check.

Oh, I told her. She laughed.

I’ve just found out that our veterinarian has died. Actually, we stopped taking our cats to her a couple/few years ago because she was very busy and it was hard to get an appointment. A few/several years ago she stopped seeing large dogs because she couldn’t handle them anymore. I don’t know how old she was, but she wasn’t elderly.

The body language pretty much said it all. Dog: oh, is that my cat? I’ll just give her a friendly sniff to be sure. /wet nose to the butt

OH SHIT!!! That is my cat and she didn’t like it!!!

Cat: Lower your head so I can slap you in the face.

Dog: /nose pointed in the air with eyes closed. I think I wanna go back inside now.

That has to be so exhausting as well as counter-productive. Many people react to that sort of rage by only doing their job. I know that the first time a client took a personal dig at me was the last time I went the extra step for them.

I do hope you get your phone and dryer settled soon.

Dang about the fleas. I know they won’t like this suggestion, but once you get rid of the infestation, you should probably not let them out again. Ours rioted when we first closed the door, but they all got over it and yours will as well.

You are a good wife and I’m sure she knows it

This is good. It is also good that your appointments won’t be disrupting your life too much. I hope everything continues going smoothly.

I hate it when I do that. We usually run the dishwasher at night and I’ll unload it while waiting on my coffee. I’ve also washed all of our cutlery for the same reason you did. Hubs bought one of those clean/dirty magnets for our dishwasher, but we got so used to it being there that we forgot what it was for.

I loved your raven and golf ball story. Could you hear the golfers swearing, I’m fairly sure they were rather upset.

Close but no cigar. He asked if we were sure we didn’t have the safe key in our junk drawer. This was after he had put the heavy cabinet boxes in our living room and saw all of the boxes which should have reminded him that Hubs had said we found the safe when we were moving in.

Speaking of the pantry cabinets, we got them put together yesterday which wasn’t that onerous. The tops had to be attached to the bases with hardware Hubs deemed to be too wimpy to hold so another trip to the hardware sto happened. He also attached them to the wall (with lag bolts) so they wouldn’t fall over during earthquakes.

I hate the health care system. More to the point, I hate the insurance run health care system. My last doctor used to say really grumpy things about having to spend so much time working around insurance plans that she didn’t have enough time to properly care for her patients.

I blinged my cane out with dollar sto glittery silver fake tattoos. I thought they would rub off in no time at all, but I’ve been carrying my main wacking stick for almost ten years and the glitter is still there.

Sometimes a cat’s gotta do what a cat’s gotta do.

I just moved GG’s tree so he would be closer to me and now he is refusing to look out the window. I keep moving his stuff and he’s getting tired of it!!!

Exactly. I keep reminding Hubs to not get used to it as far as kitchen cabinets are concerned. I know I’ll be rearranging them several times as the kitchen rebuild happens.

Give treats after. Right away. I usually put the treat on the table so they can see it and then as soon as I’m done the treat goes on their place mat.

Since it is liquid, maybe try mixing it in some squeezy crack? GG could taste his meds in Churu’s but VBC would just chow down.

Sometimes that’s all that matters

Hubs complains when I move the furniture, so I move the wall art instead. That seems to do it for me and he doesn’t notice.

So you probably don’t want to post it for us to proof!

I’m sure they will love you two as much as we all do. And if not, I have swang my cane for a while…

Buddy has actually shown very little interest in going out since his little excursion back around Memorial Day. Allie, OTOH, seems to want more patio time. It’s a small patio that I’m pretty sure we’ve got configured at this point so that other cats can’t get near her out there.

Are earthquakes that much of a thing in WV?

We do. As soon as DH lets go after the dose, Buddy now scurries toward his dish for his treats, and Allie has learned that if she makes a prompt appearance, she gets some too (doesn’t seem fair to not give her some, and I don’t want to have to deal with a scuffle if she tries to swipe her brother’s treats).

I’ve seen the phrase “squeezy crack”, but am unclear on details like brand, etc.

These are the original squeezy crack, but there are many other brands as well.

Ya never know!

Oh boy, things are getting tense around here. We were supposed to close on our old place today, everything was happening but the buyers balked because the rain barrels are old and show cracks on the tops.

They want two grand to replace them. They have been nickle and dimeing us through the entire process and we have given them almost ten grand.

Enough is enough. They were the fifth people who saw it, and they offered asking price.

We told the realtor to cancel the sale and put it back on the market at the original asking price.

Hubs is bald so can’t pull his hair out, but he’s sure yanking on his beard a bunch. I’m not as worried, but I don’t think society will collapse next week, so there is that.

Remember how I went back and forth with that one place about pay and they decided to interview me for what I was asking for?

The interview was supposed to be tomorrow and I just got an email saying that they’ve already hired someone so my interview is canceled.:woman_shrugging:

Well, JtC, sounds like what you did was definitely for the best.

Tonight there was moving of the cat tree. It is back to where it was originally, I tried moving it a few feet over to the window without a screen, I’ve tried working around it. It works better at the window with the screen due to the wall hvac unit.

Koritza is not sure about the move. She is a fascinating girl. She is fearless, but takes a bit to warm up to things. She takes time to decide if a change is good. When I do cat laundry it takes 2-3 days for her to decide if the item is usable. Sometimes a favourite will never be acceptable after laundry.

Lager is happy with the new spot for the shelf thing. Don’t tell him, but I’m thinking of wall mounting it. That will put it out of his reach.

Of course that will be after I paint the wall…so…
