Old billboard in True Detective Season 3 intro

My question is about an old billboard that appears in the intro.

The filming location and setting is Arkansas and to me this billboard doesn’t fit. It seems to be out in the west like Nevada or California.

Could this billboard really be in Arkansas with the look of the mountains in the background?

They actually mention Nevada in the most recent episode. So I guess it does fit well because it doesn’t seem to be Arkansas location.

There are mountains in Arkansas- hte Ouac I imagine it’s not unlikely that you could find a place like that somewhere in the state.

Fun fact: the Ouachita mountains in Arkansas, the Appalachians, and the anti-Atlas Mountains of Morocco were all once the same mountain range at one point in the distant past.

Not that it helps answer the question, but I’d put money down on that being a drive-in movie screen.

Bingo! Much more structural support for the size of a screen. Billboard would normally just be 3 or 4 poles.

It’s not just the mountains, but also the arid landscape. Looks way too dry for Arkansas.

You can add mountains in Scotland to that list.

I thought I remembered that from historical geology class, but I couldn’t find anything in a couple minutes’ quick googling.

Some of that could potentially be the color grading. That and an abandoned drive-in could potentially be filled with scrubby brown weeds during the summer.

Can’t tell from the size and blur if the forestation on that mountain is appropriate. The topography seems ok from my memory of spending summers in AR with my grandparents.

Looks nothing like Arkansas. The Ouachita Mountains in the west are surrounded by rolling, forested hills. The flat farmland in the east has no mountains nearby.
