Or the stereotypical slacker chronically on welfare mom. NOT bashing those on welfare…but there does seem to be a subtype of the chronic welfare population where tattered Starter jackets are THE fashion item.
YO! Z. CAVARICCI! AIN’T YOU EVER BEEN TO A CHESS KING? YO!
There’s always the urban brand of the year, such as Troop. I wonder what happens to clothing from urban brands like Troop after they fall out of fashion like a stone, and not even the shoppers at Salvation Army and the like want them.
What about old-school brands, like Munsingwear?
Zubaz is still quite popular in Buffalo.
I only see Big Dog stores at middle-end outlet malls. They only seem popular with the shaved-head-and-goatee crowd.
I notice that the Big Dogs outlet store in town just went out of business (Santa Barbara, the founding town). Hell, I’ve probably had 10 pairs of Big Dogs shorts over the years because you could buy them for next to nothing here. They were the first super baggy shorts I owned.
HA! Can you still fit in them? They were all the rage in my freshmen year in 1975. Lauren had the nicest ass in the dorms. They had that great upside down U seam.
How about Famolare shoes. Damn, I should have kept those along with my Earth Shoes and my Wallabees.
I think I still have a pair of second generation baggy OP cargo shorts, but I wish I hung onto my blue corduroy OP shorts from 1978. I doubt I could fit into the 27" waist.
OK, when are they going to bring back Dolphin shorts?
I remember Rude Dog. I love Rude Dog! I would buy them now, if they were still around. It’s pretty sad-I’m 52.

Howabout the Bart Simpson Underachiever tees. I had one in middle school. I don’t think I’ve seen anyone wear a shirt with a Simpsons character on it since the mid-90s, though.
I was going to say Quiksilver, but I think they’re still around. I know I’ve seen Roxy stuff (their women’s line) in the stores recently. My friend from high school French class wore Quiksilver all the time because her dad was the local distributor or something.
Another one I remember being popular when I was in high school was T&C Surfwear. I remember it was so popular they even based a NES game on it - my brother had it. One T&C T-shirt that was particularly popular at my school showed the male characters who appeared on the other T-shirts gathered around a blackboard while another character wrote the words “Chicks + sticks [surfboards]= Don’t Mix!” on the board. It angered me for some reason, I guess because to me it implied that women were considered incapable of surfing properly. I don’t even surf!
Pendleton Mills is definitely still around: http://www.pendleton-usa.com/ I thought it was boring at the time, but my best high school graduation gift came from there. Grandmother helped me choose a classic black Pendleton trenchcoat, at a cost of (gasp!) $200-ish. Absolutely the most expensive garment I’d ever owned back then - 1987. Just this summer, though, I finally had to replace that overcoat, but only because it had a couple of moth holes, due to my own negligence in storage. Otherwise, it looked just as spiffy as the day it was purchased. Needless to say, I replaced the coat with a nearly-identical model! http://www.pendleton-usa.com/product/Women/OUTERWEAR/OUTERWEAR/PARK-PLACE-COAT/167311/pc/1815/sc/1775/sc/1775/c/1775.uts Even now, it’s only about $80 more than the coat I wore for so many years - a bargain - and it never seems to go out of style!
One brand I used to wear off-the-rack back in the day was Gloria Vanderbilt. I know that her couture line is still available, but I never see her pret a porter anymore. Maybe I’m just not paying attention, though.
PS - I know that Big Dog brand is still around, but only because my dad seeks out their underwear. I think that’s the kiss of death for a brand, when one’s Social Security-eligible parents wear it!
There was also “No Fear”. Were they a skating brand? I know Vans were but I think they’re still around. There was also Gecko and all those “Malcolm X” branded clothes that Spike Lee popularized (the hat at least). Reebok Pumps, Karl Kani (an Urban brand kids used to wear at my hs).
Wasn’t there a brand called “FU”? I imagine that such an offensive name was reason enough to buy them.
It’d be great if these made a comeback, and were available in England.
I have some British Knights slip-ons, the same style as Vans slip-ons. But with a different design to the checks on the Vans.
They seem to sell them here in the UK in the big sports clothes and equipment warehouse kind of shops, along with other skate shoes.
My kids begged me to get them Cavalieri jeans they were expensive at that time…the 80’s…finally gave in and they got them…they always made your shape nice…
Doc Martin boots was another must have…
I’ve heard zombies look really good in them, too ![]()
(msfufu, just so you’re aware, you’re responding to a nearly 5-year-old thread.)
sorry…just joined and found this post from a search :-))
No worries. Stick around a while–we don’t bite (hard). ![]()
Bugle Boy Jeans.
**No Fear **- At first, it was huge in various racing crowds because you had to know someone to get the clothing. Then, it became more mainstream and the death knell sounded when it was picked up by a major retailer. I believe they were sold off to a manufacturer with several brands, but they’ve lost their caché.
**Brittania **- the first jeans that were reliably long enough for me.
**Banff **- winter boots. Now they do ski boots only.
They’ve made a comeback. I see them all the time (including on my feet).
Doc Martens are all the rage here (north of Italy). I have two pairs, and could not live without. And they were never really gone, either. Just restricting to subculture.
