Can anybody remember the song/video that Dire Straights did during the early 80’s featuring a girl rollerskating around with headphones on? I remember loving that song yet can’t remember the name or even the chorus. I believe it was pre-“Money for Nuthin’” Looked all over the D.S’s site at allmusic.com but couldn’t find a familiar sounding title. So, any guesses?
I think I know the song you’re talking about, and the title that’s jumping into my head is “Rollergirl,” or something like that. My husband isn’t here, so I can’t ask him (he’s a musician, & a huge Dire Straits fan). I’ll keep working on it!

The song is called “Skateaway” and appears on the album “Making Movies”.
I guess that solves that.
thanks guys!
BobT nailed it. A little more info:
Making Movies is a fine album. Probably Dire Straits’ best. Worth buying.
Partial lyrics to “Skateaway” (note that, like many Dire Straits lyrics, they aren’t gramatically correct, much less very linear):
I’ve seen a girl in a one-way corridor,
stealing down a wrong-way street.
For all the world like an urban torreador,
she had wheels on her… on her feet.
And the cars do the usual dances,
same old cruise and the curbside crawl.
But Rollergirl, she’s taking chances.
I just love to see her take them all.
(Bridge)
No fears alone at night, she’s sailing through the crowd,
and the earphones hold her tight, the music’s playing loud.
(Chorus)
She gets rock and roll on a rock and roll station,
in a rock and roll dream.
She’s making movies on location,
she don’t know what it means.
And the music make her want to be the story.
And the story was whatever was the song (what it was)
Rollergirl, don’t worry.
D.J. play the movies all night long (all night long).
[etc.]
Thanks, BobT & Nurlman! As soon as I read your posts, it all came flooding back. Now if only I could get the song out of my head!

Whatever you do, don’t watch the video if you can help it. If you close your eyes and listen to the music, it’s surreal, sublime and scintillating. The video sucks.
