Morning, mumpers! It’s currently 8c/46f with a predicted high of 12c/54f and partly cloudy. Weather app says “Asking someone to be fucking positive about the weather is like asking them to fucking smile more. It’s fucking annoying.” There you have it!
On this day in 1944, RAF rear gunner Nicholas Alkemade survived a jump from his Lancaster bomber 18,000 feet over Germany without a parachute; his fall was broken by pine trees and soft snow, and he suffered only a sprained leg.
Went to an “On This Day” site, and this was the first on the list:
1603: Scottish King James VI, son of Mary, Queen of Scots, becomes King James I of England in succession to Elizabeth I, uniting the English and Scottish crowns.
Thus ended the Tudor Dynasty.
From another site:
1900: Mayor Van Wyck of New York breaks ground for the New York subway tunnel that will link Manhattan and Brooklyn.
I don’t know how fun they are, but if you’ve got a cocktail party tonight, you’ve now got some conversation starters (or enders.)
Weather radar shows that we’re in the midst of rain at the moment. We’re not. More promised as the morning progresses - we’ll see. I may or may not get some yard work done. That’s as far ahead as I’ve thought. So we shall see!
Good Mornin’ Y’all! Up and caffeinatin’. YAWN ‘Tis 54 Amurrkin out and cloudy with a predicted high of 72 and rain. Rain is predicted to start soon. It’s a good day to stay inside and dry whilst honin’ RDOS skills I say. Sup will be salmon patties, peas, smashed N.O.T. and bizkits due to a gnawin’ and a cravin’.
Here’s a fun fact just for you BooFae. A group of owls is called a parliament. Make of that what you will.
Now I need more caffeine and to feed rumbly tummy. Then, onward into the day! Rah.
Several of the 'stans are celebrating the beginning of Spring today.
I’m “celebrating” going home. It rained here around sunrise 90 minutes ago and everything is freshly washed off. Temp is 77/25 and mildly tropically humid as the clouds clear up and the sun peaks through.
Not much time for typing now, gotta eat and get cleaned up to go.
Good morning! Cocoa powder (the rest of the world spells it CACAO) does not dissolve in water. It forms a colloidal suspension, and the particles will settle out if not stirred.
I woke up at 7:30 am, discovering that I had not set my alarm. There’s nothing on the calendar, so I don’t have to go anywhere.
Usually, the trash truck guys pick up regular trash early, and take the recycle stuff around noon. Mrs. Nott put out the recycle bin last night, and it’s already sitting with the lid open. Oh, well…
Chefguy is quoting The Simpsons, so it must be morning.
Limes are usually consumed before they’re ripe. When they ripen, they turn yellow.
Oh man, I got nothing! I’ll have to figure out my fun fact later. I hope I don’t get kicked out of the MMP!
In the meantime, my day shall be different and possibly even interesting. Several times I have reached out to the lady who owns the art shop (where I have some of my stuff) at our local mall to let her know that if she needs help in a pinch that I am available. She has health issues and other things going on. So, today is finally my day to work there! Fortunately she told me that there is only a stool behind the counter, so I have to bring my own chair if I want one. I originally was going to take one of my camp style chairs, but then I realized it’s been sitting out all night in the rain. Fortunately I’ve got a wheeled chair here in the house that will work.
I’m debating on taking some polymer clay with me so that I have something to do while I’m there. I still haven’t decided about that yet. And I’ve got to obsess about snacks to take and my phone charger and all that stuff. I’ve got about 2 hours until I go. I hope I can find something meaningful here that I can force myself to do in the mean time so I’m not in full freak out mode before I get there.
Up about 0730 after a good night’s sleep despite the rain and a few tunder-boomers. Just the usual 5 “S” day (shop-sammich-swim-sauna-soccer) with the 3pm workout added, so a fairly busy day for me. Temperatures are supposed to reach 70F, so that will be comfortable.
Sticky Buns, happy day sitting in at the art shop.
JtC, I did what you suggested on Sunday, banged the keyboard a couple of times on the desk, and wonder of wonders, the right arrow key is working!! Guess the old “when in doubt, hammer” does work after all.
And time for the morning banana, so have a good Moanday all.
I’ve been in travel-planning mode. I found an excursion for when we stop at Honningsvag, Norway and booked it. Then I looked into a few things for our family (minus SIL) trip to Cades Cove/Gatlinburg next month. I’ve added notes to my folder and printed a map (actually, all I needed was the address for the GPS, but why not? I saw that Ober Mountain give free wristbands (the admission ticket) to veterans, so I messaged them to find out what proof they’ll need. I’m going to make copies of our DD214 just in case. Otherwise, it’d be $40 for each of us geezers.
I did find out that a full laundry bag on Holland America is $35 and they return it within 48 hours. They don’t have self-service laundry aboard, but who wants to spend a cruise doing laundry? So I figure at most, we’ll need 2 loads done, and I think if we fold our dirties rather than cram them in the bag, we might get more in there. So add that to the trip budget.
It’s still raining on and off - so much for garden work today. Maybe I can rollsuck and load the dishwasher. Not sure what else needs doing. I’m thinking pulled poke for supper.
Of course you won’t, I don’t think anyone ever gets kicked out of the MMP, we loves you too much! Have a fabulous day sitting in the art shop, I hope you get lots of interesting people to chat to.
There’s a lot to be said for percussive maintenance
You’ll miss it, you know you will! And I bet they don’t fold it properly…
I’m sure you’ll all be pleased to hear that I’m no longer at death’s door. I may still be heading towards the Last Rites as I’ve still not had a cup of tea, but I managed some porridge this morning, and I’ve just had a small glass of Irn Bru so I think I’l last out the afternoon
That’s good to know. Death’s door sucks. Plus we need your daily rude weather reports!
Rollsuck is done. I even rinsed out the canister - it was pretty dusty. I suspect it’s ash - I probably used it on the pellet stove instead of the shop vac. Shame on me.
Dishwasher is loaded and I’ve got the ice maker making ice. Our rain gauge puddle is pretty full and precip continues to fall. Too early for lunch so I guess I’ll get out my tablet and do my daily sudoku.
In FL you can get your driver’s license with the word “Veteran” on it. And substantially everywhere in the state that cares about people’s vet status knows to accept that as proof.
Just have to visit the DMV once with your current DL & DD214 and they make you a new DL on the spot. Tres handy.
VA might have a similar feature.
On Viking the “laundry bag” was not even the size of an 8 gallon trash bag. So teeny compared to what “laundry bag” means to most homeowners.
You might want to try to research just how much volume you get per bag on HA.
Typical understaffed Monday. At one point The Supreme Shouting Officer walked by, said hello to the PT Sup, and glared at me. Sorry to offend you with my presence, Your Hagness. I did my Aldi run, just needed a few things, mostly cheese. It lloks like I will have afternoon rain, and maybe a storm.
Not if you put the lime in the coconut.
They let me stay, so I wouldn’t worry much. I do like the clay idea, just to have something to do.
I don’t know if the following is a “fun fact”, but scareyfaerie’s OP made me think of it; more of a fascinating story.
In March, 1918, an 18 year old Canadian in the RFC, Alan McLeod, was piloting a two-seater fighter in France, over enemy lines. They shot down a German plane, and then they were attacked by eight more planes. They shot down three of them, but they were both badly wounded. The petrol tank was punctured and their plane caught on fire.
McLeod climbed out of the cockpit and crouched on the wing. He was initially able to control the plane by the joystick. When that wasn’t sufficient, he punched a hole in the fabric of the fuselage and was able to control the plane by the rudder-wire!
Still on the wing, he was able to pilot the plane back to No Man’s Land, in a way that kept the flames from reaching his badly wounded partner, then brought the plane down in a controlled crash.
Although badly wounded himself, he was able to pull his partner out of the burning plane and carry him to safety, while under fire from the German lines, until he collapsed from loss of blood.
His superiors recommended McLeod for the DSO, but when the recommendation got to Whitehall, someone there said “What the Hell? This fellow gets a VC!”
McLeod was one of Canada’s youngest recipients of the VC. He died back in Winnipeg of the Spanish flu pandemic, just shy of his 20th birthday.
wasn’t able to read any of last week’s mmp after noon on Saturday; priorities, ya know. Having just read a few from Saturday, here’s the news:
Dang Badgers. First ones to lose from the Big Ten. Followed shortly on their heels by UCLA. On Saturday Purdue was victorious over McNeese (alma mater of Joe Dumars).
Sunday Big Ten games were: Illinois losing to Kentucky 84-75, Maryland winning by 1 point on a buzzer beater over Colorado St 72-71, next Michigan State Spartans beating New Mexico 71-63 and lastly Oregon losing to Arizona 87-83.
So 4 teams from the Big Ten are still dancing their way into the Sweet Sixteen:
Thursday Game: Maryland plays Florida on TBS 7:30ish
Friday Games: MSU plays Ole Miss on CBS 7:09
Michigan plays Auburn on CBS approx 9:45ish
Purdue plays Houston on TBS approx 10:15ish.
And that’s the report from the NCAA Tournament center in SE Mitten.
I’ve kinda gotten out of the MMP habit. Nothing against y’all, just sort of stopped coming by. Thought I’d pop back in to say hi. What have I missed?
Life keeps chugging along here at chez Wheelz. I’ve only worked five weeks so far this year (3 in Austin, 2 in Tampa). Hoping things pick up soon.
Mrs W’s sister and BIL are getting kicked out of the house they’ve been renting in San Francisco for 26 (!) years because the owners want to sell. They have purchased a house here in Henderson just six miles from ours and will be moving in May. The sisters are very excited to become neighbors again (it’s the reason we moved to SF in the first place). So that’s the big news around here lately.
More later I guess. Don’t want to post a giant wall of text after being absent.
Fun fact: 10th President John Tyler (born 1790) has a living grandson.
Well, they did say it’s a blue bag. This is what one person posted in a forum:
This is what fits in the laundry bag: 2 long sleeve dress shirts, 2 short sleeve dress shirts,1 pair athletic shorts, 2 pair yoga pants, 4 pair jeans, 1 tshirt…12 pair socks and 12 undergarments folded in a basket.
Several people posted that you definitely fit the most if you fold/roll the garments into the bag. So pricier than your local fluff-n-fold but not too terrible. Even at home, we wear our jeans more than one day, and on days at sea, we’re not likely to get too dirty. And unders are easy to wash out in the sink and dry in the shower where there’s a handy retractable clothes line. Plus I have one that has clips on it that we’ve used on the balcony, hooked to the chairs. I think we’ll be fine.
Rain continues, as does ice making. FCD is still futzing on the boat. It’s sooooo quiet here. Loving it!!
