(Old) Fun Facts in the MMP!

I have both lemons and limes on hand, so I had to empirically test this. Y’know, fighting ignorance and all.

Of 2 lemons and 5 limes, both lemons did indeed float. But only 1 of the 5 limes sank. The others all floated.

Not trying to disprove it; this is just a small data point. It’s possible I have a batch of unusually low-density limes. I do try to individually pick out limes with thinner skins because they tend to be more juicy. It’s possible the thick-skinned limes do all sink.

I realized that a few minutes later. D’oh!!

And I just looked it up - they have an unlimited laundry package for just under $300, but we could do a bag a week for half that. I did a slightly shorter cruise with my mom on Princess where they had a laundry room. We used it one day about halfway thru and we were fine. It’s not like up around the Arctic Circle we’re going to be all sweaty every day. :open_mouth:

My day continues. Dealing with emigration & security formalities at the airport was quick and easy. Leaving a lot of time to kill once on the secure side; fortunately the terminal is spacious and new and the amenities actually amenable. I was pleasantly surprised to get a free first class upgrade; that never happens.

So now lunch has been eaten, Bloody Mary’s ingested, and now a nap beckons as some other poor bastards are stuck driving up front. Not my problem; neener neener :stuck_out_tongue:

Tonight’s date with GF#1 is confirmed for both place and time. If her texts are to be believed, she’ll be very glad to see me.

Sad that Illinois is out of the Madness. I will now root for Purdue.

I felt energetic during my workout, so I did 2 sets of 10 of each of the following

Bird dogs
Rows with the rubber band
Side steps
Push ups
Arnolds
Hamstring curls
Triceps pull downs
Squats
Bridges

Guess who’s taking (most of) the rest of this week off? The draft proposal I’ve been working on got superceded by something more urgent, and everyone who isn’t transferring to a new program on Monday is now working on that. This week’s proposal review was cancelled, I’d already finished drafting my section, and I’m already going to be out of the office tomorrow (Supreme Court day!), so my current boss agreed that the easiest thing would be for me to simply use leave for the rest of the week. Luckily, even after this week I’ll still have 60+ hours in the bank.

I said “most of” the rest of this week because I’ll actually work for 1-2 hours on Wednesday: my current grandboss would like some changes to her group’s SharePoint site, and I’m the site admin. We’re meeting at noon on Wednesday; I’ll be happy to help. I sent my new boss a note letting her know about the change in plan, and that I’ll be reachable most of the week if she wants to send me any info and/or needs to ask me anything before Monday. I handed off my proposal section to the guy who’s been writing some of it, and I can charge the rest of today to the proposal even though I don’t really have anything to do.

Having most of the week off – actual downtime – will be a nice break before the new job starts. And, happily, there are 5000+ pieces of Lego in my house waiting to be assembled! Also, I was going to shop for new work clothes this weekend but now I can go during the week when the mall will be less crowded.

Speaking of Lego, I finished most of the Atari set yesterday (the remaining bag is just the Centipede cartridge and mini-scene). Here’s the console:

It slides open to reveal a cool little scene of a minifig playing Atari (complete with boombox and cat):

When Centipede is done, I’ll upload bigger/more detailed photos to my Lego photo album and share that link.

Mostly today I’ve been preparing for tomorrow morning’s trip to the Supreme Court. I printed my ticket and a floor plan, downloaded some other reference material to my phone (e.g., points of interest in the building), reminded myself of which Metro stop to use, and figured out how long it should take to get there. They recommend arriving at least an hour before the session begins – to account for “admittance procedures” – but I’d like to get there an hour before the courtroom doors will open, so I’ll be leaving my house NLT 8:30am. The only thing I’ll be allowed to bring into the courtroom itself is a notepad and writing instrument: no purse/bag, jacket, electronic device of any kind, etc. I’ll bring a small notepad – for doodling, if nothing else – and will stow my purse and phone in a locker while the session is underway.

Owls don’t have eyeballs: they have long optical tubes, which is why they can turn their heads up to 270 degrees.

Indeed! :smiling_cat_with_heart_eyes:

Yay! I hope you’re having/will have fun!

Yep, I was gonna suggest rolling.

Hey there! Welcome back!

My big news is that my contract was abruptly terminated on 02/28, but I was given a three-week furlough/layoff “extension” to do some proposal work and was able to find a new job within the company: not only does it start a week from today, it’s a promotion. March has been a bit of an emotional rollercoaster, but all’s well that ends well!

Nice!!

That’s gotta be an awesome feeling.

Do you judge their takeoff & landings? (A smoooooooth landing is so nice. And rare.)

I do a bit. But smooth isn’t the correct goal. The correct goal is in the right spot on the runway +/- about 1 second of forward travel.

Lots of folks screw that up over and over and over, wasting valuable runway trying to gently feel their way down the last 5 feet to the ground. Nope. Get the wheels on the rocks and get on the brakes. Lest you go off-roading at the far end some slippery sloppy day.

Wheelie that will be so nice for Mrs. W to have her sister close by.

Taters I’ll bet it was great to have your son visit for the weekend.

Hubs took the 2nd potential vehicle that our Daughter was interested in to our mechanic today who gave it the thumbs up then on the way back to the dealership, he swung by our house so I could have a look at it. I think Daughter will like it a lot.

wet one that was quite ambitious of you. Good job on the workout.

oopsie looking forward to your synopsis of your Supreme Court day. Enjoy the experience.

Spartan women are playing NC St. Well, game might be over now. I’m going to go watch the DVR. My guess is doggio’s team will likely win the game.

Looks like the rain has finally stopped, but it still looks dreary. We shall see what the morrow brings!

I tried watching a production of Pride and Prejudice on BritBox, but it wasn’t very good. Oh well, just half an hour wasted on episode 1. I can skip the next 4 episodes and not lose much.

All in all, a boring afternoon.

OMFG. I got talked into going to a talk about local politics and caucuses and the like. The speaker was possibly the most boring person on the planet, unless my old Econ 101 professor is still alive. He droned on for an hour about percentages of “delicates”. I finally, after my wife declined my request to kill me, got up and left the room. Fucking hell, people; these are senior citizens, not dewy-eyed activists.

Been a while since I Mumped (is that the right verb?).

I’m sick. “Just” a cold (why do we say that? Colds suck!). Not a big deal except the nature of my work is that I either lose the money for a gig (in this case $75 for a church choir call) or I need to reschedule all my missed lessons. Which is particularly problematic for Mondays because I already lose a Monday every semester for either Labor Day or MLK Day, depending on semester.

But the cats have been very cuddly.

Fun fact: Javalina are not pigs, they are peccaries. The Spanish name came from the Roman word Javalin which was once used to hunt wild pigs.

Also, you can buy hickory nut or acorn butter to put on trees to attract Flying Squirrels.

I’m sorry you are sick, but I’ve also noticed that our cats seem very helpful when I’m under the weather.

So today was beautiful, the sun was out and it has warmed up nicely. The Redbuds and pink dogwood are blooming and there is something orange that I can’t get a good look at yet. So far, spring has been exceeding all of my expectations. The forest is changing by the hour now, the bright fresh green of new growth is covering the forest floor as a backdrop to the bright splashes of color. I just love it.

When we got to Charleston, we learned that google had lied to us and the Mothman distillery never actually got off the ground so we had lunch and then went to the Hatfield distillery and tasted flavored moonshines and bourbons. I bought a bottle of tiramisu infused and hubs got a bottle of apple pie flavored moonshine. I also got a sampler box of 6 different shots that I can use for stocking stuffers. They came in an nice gift box that would fit nicely in a stocking if I only knew someone who would appreciate it.

Hubs was wearing his USMC baseball hat which resulted in Mark Hatfield giving us a 10% discount. WV also puts your veteran status on your driver license if requested, so I whipped out my license and asked if that meant we could get 20% off and they said no, but it did get me a free sample bottle of cranberries in black cherry infused moonshine, so I left happy as well.

(I know that’s not how it works, and I only do it when I know they will laugh instead of getting offended. Plus, they poured their tasters pretty full and I was feeling pretty festive by that time.)

First full week starting at the new museum job. Today it’s closed, so we can work on things on the floor. There is much happening, new flooring going in around the live sea creatures tanks, and I made a new support structure for the anemones. Install is, tentatively, tomorrow.

However, I fear for the future, with the museum being as dependent as it is on grants and certain, ahem, things happening with our government right now.

Looks like I may have infected my wife. Hopefully I’m better by tomorrow so she can have the house (and the cats) to herself.

Yanno, there’s a limit to what you should share with your spouse/partner…

Hope you and she are back to good health soon!

You just flung a cravin’ for salmon patties on me.

That was one that my grandad reminded us about all of the time.

Yay!

Fun fact: there are no seagulls in Hawaii.

Irked, came home, walked Nelson and et. Now for studio time.

Stay safe and healthy y’all!

The rain we had last week has “time lapsed” various early spring plants. The daffodils have had a crazy growth spurt and the cherry trees are budding.

The gloomy day has cleared just in time for sundown.

My fun fact contribution: I read the other day that Tasmanian devils often defecate in groups. Then it hit me: they’re the original party poopers!

I spied this at a store today, and it gave me a chuckle.

I don’t have much to report. I walked just shy of 5 miles this morning. I need to get back to the gym, as I haven’t been doing any weight-bearing exercise at all.

Oopsie, that is one impressive Lego creation! I’m in awe at your patience and skill. And a huge congrats on the new job/promotion! So happy for you!

JtC, glad you got some moonshine. (The only time I ever tasted any it was just like a sip of lighter fluid. Not that I’ve ever quaffed lighter fluid. I think it was a pretty raw batch by an inexperienced moonshiner. How are the foot and wrist?

VanGo, I’m hoping hard your fears turn out to be unfounded.

I used to be able to get some delicious salmon patties at a store in Wyoming. One day they were out, and when I asked a worker in that department, he had no idea what I was talking about until I thought to call them “salmon burgers.” I’m glad you said patties, swampy. Do you make yours from scratch? Fresh, frozen or canned salmon?

Forgot my fun fact. African wild dogs practice democracy. When a pack member wants to hunt, the pack decides whether or not to go by sneezing. The number of sneezes required for a win depends on the status of the dog who puts forth the question.
