(Old) Fun Facts in the MMP!

Howdy Y’all! We honed our RDOS skills on this rainy day. I did take advantage of a break in the rain late mornin’ to haul my neighbor’s and our trash cans all the way up the driveway to where they live. I am all nice like that. Sup got fixed and et and OYKW cleanded up. I feel like I could go to sleep right now but won’t.

Nellie I use canned salmon. I drain it, add a beaten aig, chopped onions, a little flour and corn meal, mix it all up, shape into patties and fry in maybe an inch of oil until golden brown. No real specific measurements, just eyeball ‘til it looks right. They don’t take long to cook and I make about six smallish patties. I learned this by watchin’ my mom make ‘em. They are always served with the little early green peas (what we call English peas down south), smashed N.O.T. and bizkits cause that’s what it says in the Bible, I think.

Went to the tax man. I’ll owe about $1,100 to the feds, about $400 to California, and about $800 to the tax man.

I stopped by Trader Joe’s on the way home and picked up a couple of cases of ‘Two’- (Four-) Buck Chuck Cabernet Sauvignon, frozen chicken thighs, a couple packages of salmon pinwheels, a bottle of bourbon, more feta, Laughing Cow cheese, and a couple of other things.

Regular fuel at the Lummi’s gas station is up to $3.769. The Arco station at my exit was only $3.679. Unusual the 76 station would be more. I refuelled at Arco.

Eight minutes until the cats’ 4 o’clock gooshy food. I’ll start the lazy dinner (Shake’n’Bake poke chops, mashed Yukon gold potatoes with garlic, and packet country gravy) when the cats are done eating.

Just leaned this fun fact. There is only one person alive today who played Major League Baseball in the 1940s.

Tonight is trivia night; maybe this thread will come in handy. We won last month. Let’s go for two in a row!

I forgot to say that when I was walking by the hospital, a medevac helicopter landed less than 200 feet from me. I’ve never been that close to a chopper before. I always thought the medevac helicopters landed on helipads on rooftops, but this one landed on the ground near the ER. I couldn’t see what was up due to a row of hedges and didn’t want to rubberneck anyway. I hope the patient is OK.

I just got a call for a dog-sitting job on Wednesday. He’s a Cavalier King Charles spaniel, very small and very sweet. His hobbies are cuddling and giving muchas smooches, so I’m looking forward to it.

Thanks for the recipe, swampy! I’ve never bought canned salmon before because the kind Mom got when I was a kid had little bits of cartilage in it, which I hated. But I do like salmon patties, so I’m definitely going to try your recipe, probably after my daughter leaves. (She’ll be here Friday-Sunday, minus a few hours Saturday when she’s driving to Seattle to see a friend and friend’s new baby.)

Speaking of salmon patties somehow reminds me: whatever happened to croquettes? I never see them any more. And fritters. I used to make corn fritters but haven’t in years. Now the only fritters I see are the apple behemoths in the donut case.

While I make mine with cracker meal instead of cornmeal (yes, I’m a damnyankee with Appalachian roots) and they tend to get served with colomorbus (cuke and onion in vinegar), fried potatoes, and, depending on the time of year, sweet corn and watermelon, washed down with iced tea. This may come from the Douay-Rheims version. :stuck_out_tongue:

Is your salmon full of bones and funky bits? The one and only time I tried to make patties, I ended up throwing away a lot of gunk from the can. I’d do better taking a salmon fillet.

I’ve done mental math assuming a 10-gallon fill, because the math is easy. And it keeps me from going out of my way to save a nickel a gallon, because that comes to a whopping 50¢ - probably as much, if not more, of what I’d burn trying to “save” on gas. When I do fill, it’s generally between 10-15 gallons, and if the difference is less than about $2, I’ll not sweat it.

I know gas is cheaper in Virginia, but the closest VA station is across a toll bridge that costs $4.50, plus it’s 20-ish miles away. It’d have to be at least a buck a gallon cheaper to be worth that drive, and even then…

There’s a documentary about Bob Ross on Netflix, and I suggest you not watch it unless you want to get majorly pissed off at his business “partners” - not nice people. Did you know, Bob was only 52 when he died? So sad. Anyway, that’s what I was watching when I was biking. Now it’s time to find something on BritBox. Off I go!!

Also, I paid bills today.

The Lummi station is about a mile round-trip from the freeway, so it’s not much of a detour. Arco is right off of the freeway and I pass it on the way home. I’m a little more sensitive with the Jeep and its 20-gallon tank, but we took the Prius to Tacoma Friday. It only has a 12-gallon tank, and it gets about 44 or 45 mpg on average; so I’ll pay the extra 50¢ or whatever.

Dinner is cooking.

And a good early evening to all. Got four of the “S’s” accomplished (shopping-sammich-sauna-swimming) but they closed the soccer fields due to all the rain we had last night, so despite a clear day and 68F temperatures, no soccer practice. We’ll try again on Thursday. May go back to the gym for some weight work, my personal trainer is off getting personal training from the US Army (I think he’s a reservist) all week, so that’ll be a week added at the end. Weight was down to 197lbs so a Double Cheeseburger and fries at Sonic should have helped bring that number up. Otherwise just a quite night is planned.

FCM, most cruises I’ve been on have a set price for a certain item, but I rather like the ‘one-price bag’ deal.

Keep feeling better, boo fae

Piper, great story, thanks for sharing it.

Welcome back, Wheelie; you’ve missed injury, happy times, sad times, job issues, protests, and general slothfulness. In others words, situation normal. Hang around if you can and find out. And hope the sisters and you and BIL are all on good terms. Good luck with the trivia.

Pilot, hope the date goes well. And the post-date goes even better… And I concur, get those wheels on the ground before the markings disappear to make me a happy customer.

wet one, that’s a pretty good workout, more than I could do.

Oopsie, looking forward to your report on your time with the Supremes; be sure to take good notes! And enjoy yout Lego hobby; that Atari set looks quite realistic–at least until you open it…

Cat Glove, glad the car checks out.

Cookie, don’t think I’ve listened to a politician talk in person in a long time; and your not encouraging me to change that. For me it was a history professor that could have put a rabid Tasmanian Devil to sleep.

Feel better soon, writt. (and your wife, too).

JtC, wondering if there is a McCoy distillery over in Kentucky…

VanGO, appendages crossed that the government comes through for the museums.

nellie, happy pup-sitting time. And yes, a helicopter landing within a couple feel of you is impressive; have you ever ridden in one?

flyboy, gas is much cheaper down here in Ali-bama ($2.70 for the cheapo, $3.10 for mid-grade).

And it’s closing in on 7pm, so if I’m going to get some gym work in, need to go now. Take care all.

Not fun fact; I’ve been sneezing a lot, and my ribs are really sore. Now my body wants to sneeze but then my ribs rebel. Ouch.

Also, I use my ribs a lot for my job. Gonna be a long week.

Not much else to tell, since I’ve been in bed all day. Cats still adorable.

This is my recipe. I came up with it when I had a whole lot of fresh salmon to use up.

8 Cups Cooked, flaked red salmon
8 Eggs, beaten
2 Cups Crushed saltine crackers
1 tsp Hot paprika
2-3 Tbsp Dried thyme leaves
2 Bunches green onions, chopped
2 tsp Salt

After mixing it all together, I’d spread it out on large cutting board or cookie sheet at about an inch thick or so, and then cut it into patties with a biscuit cutter. This makes a lot of cakes, but they freeze really well.

This and I prefer buying from trusted stations when around home. I got a bad tank a couple of years ago that cost me ~$700 to have sucked out of my tank, get the system ann engine checked and have new fuel filters put in (the bad tank had water and diesel mixed in).

With REAL unicorn noises! :joy:

I’ve smelled lighter fluid which gave me a good idea as to what it would taste like.

Moonshine is just un-aged whiskey and really shouldn’t have much of a taste at all when done right. I like it because drinking it makes me feel all edgy and stuff, but the main reason it is illegal to make at home is because of the methanol that is created when the distilling process isn’t done properly.

You can’t make folks go blind with beer, wine or mead, it is only homemade distilled booze that can do that.

Well, seeing as how the king and his kids got hold of the Institute of Museum and Library Services last week and they consider that sort of thing to be even more wasteful than food stamps or free school lunches, here’s hoping that his museum has lots of rich supporters.

Gas prices are about a dollar a gallon lower here, but the prices fluctuate from county to county. When we go south, we always look at the prices on our way down so we know where to stop on our way back. It was 2.63/gal where we stopped, but I saw it as high as 2.79 in Charleston.

42 is always the answer.

Just reminded me that yesterday I learned that those krab sticks you can get at the grocery store are actually some sort of white fish, usually pollack. It gets ground up and mixed with their “seasonings” and stabilizers before being formed into thin sheets that get rolled up and dyed.

I was really surprised at that. The main ingredient is a recognizable food. I thought it was all chemicals and plastics, who woulda thunk they would be sneaking in something that is actually good for you?

A quick look shows a strong McCoy presence in the Kentucky booze business. Not surprising, those names are probably more widely known than the Greenbriar Hotel.

Hug a pillow when you feel a sneeze coming on. It helps the ribs not hurt as much.

So we have picked our insulation guys and will be signing the contract tomorrow. The timing is going to be iffy, we will need to be out of the house while they are working and then for 24 hours after that, but the off-road season is just getting started and booking a motel room on short notice might be iffy. The salesguy said they would give us a firm date but might be able to offer to do the job sooner on short notice.

That’s like how the window installation went and we choose the earlier, less convenient time because we needed that job done as soon as possible. I can’t see any reason we need to rush this last bit of work, but I know that hubs just wants it all done and over.

We got Mom’s check in the mail and it was made out to me. So I had to sign it. And that hurt a whole lot. Just typing with my fingers doesn’t hurt much, but as soon as I get my thumb involved it just HURTS a whole lot. Most people learn after a few times, but I am not most people and I am still trying to use my lighter with my right hand. I can’t get high enough to stop caring about that sudden pain, despite being so high I can’t remember to use my left hand. FML.

Did anyone else see the clip of the pro-trump guy (at a CA tesla dealership) tazing a couple of protesters before getting taken down by a very angry old woman? She has shamed me. I should be out there doing something and here I am sitting around with my foot in the air. I am so very grumpy that not even chocolate helps.

I got a new fez today. I’ve had a Shriner’s fez, without any logos, for more than 30 years. I have another one that I didn’t buy from the Shriners. They’re both too tall for serious wearing. They’re more for the Punk/New Wave scene I was into back in the day. The new one is much shorter. I’d wear it out and about, only my wife is rather conservative and doesn’t want me to ‘make a fool of myself’.

I napped. I dreamed a climbed a mountain, and was petting a grizzly while watching a white sperm whale in a lake. then I lost my phone, keys, and wallet. I found them, after finding 20 other lost key sets, and 10 lost phones. so I went to the panda exhibit, where they were flossig the pandas’ teeth.
Spot napped on and off with me. Tonight’s cheeseburger is with Penzy’s bavarian seasoning, sauteed mushrooms and onions, and Havarti cheese.

That was some audie Murphy level heroics.

I choose think skinned lemons and oranges for the oils for my cocktails. I choose the thin limes for the juice for my Mai Tais and Margaritas.

That was the baller set up in 1982.

So you’re in for a bouncy landing?

Yes. Welcome back and feel better!

Yeah, all the 'shine I ever had was high test, but smooth.

It’s a marathon, not a sprint.

So are you totally unable to take a hint or what? I totally bought that gift pack for you, so give me your shipping address, gosh darnit!

Well, today could make a girl feel valued :).

As I’ve probably mentioned in the over a month this has been in process, I applied for an office position with my local transit system. I apparently did well enough on the application stage to be invited to do skills testing a couple of weeks ago, then apparently did well enough on that that I got email today requesting that I make an appointment for an interview via Teams (great, now I’ve gotta learn how to USE Teams in the next three weeks, while working FT). Got that appointment set, for 15 April (yeah, the interview appointment dates were the 14th and 15th of next month).

Also, as I’m sure I’ve mentioned, I’m currently a temp account clerk with my county’s Fleet Services. For a couple of weeks now, I’ve been doing entry-level Accounts Payable (inputting invoices, making sure PO numbers make sense for which garage stuff is going to and what type of stuff is being purchased, making sure the correct sales tax rate got applied) and some general clerical. My trainer/officemate/semi-supervisor has told me she thinks I’m doing quite well. Today, the parts department manager at the building I work in noticed that listings have opened for permanent hire in the job I’m doing now and both he and trainer/officemate are actively urging me to apply. Trainer/officemate says she’d much rather have a temp who’s doing well go permanent than have to start over with a newbie, which makes sense. She did also point out to me today while we were figuring out a tricky one together some work done by prior people in that position and who was or wasn’t very good at it, according to her.

So, good progress on one potential permanent job, being actively urged to apply for another by people I’ve been working with for a couple of weeks and would be working with long-term if I were to wind up in that office if hired (IMO decent chance given the situation).

Also, DH landed an approximately two-week gig (could vary) at a much better rate of pay and that uses his electrician skills more than the day labor stuff he’s been getting a few days a week of, so that’ll be helpful.

On the domestic front, we do have a lesser backup microwave in play that is more or less adequate so far, but we’ll both be happy to get our better one back, which is going to be a few days. The cats are bratty today.

Properly made filling for Key Lime Pie is yellow, not green.

Late night final here. Did make it to the gym later than usual, did both cardio(walking and biking) and muscle-stuff (weight machines) so I ought to sleep well tonight. Got the schedule for the first couple of weeks of soccer games, will send them to my parents tomorrow morning (too tired now and might make a mistake). We’re looking at a high of 77F tomorrow, so yay! for that.

writt, have had that before, Hope you feel better (and quit sneezing) soon,

Nettie, it’s always a pleasurable feeling when people value your work; hope whichever job lands you for full-time works out well for you.

And it’s after 11pm here, so off to bed I go., Catch y’all on 2sDay.

We finished second of five teams at trivia.

There were a couple of questions I was right about but got voted down by other team members. I need to fight harder for those.

But it wouldn’t have mattered tonight; the winning team absolutely crushed it and beat us by 5 points.

Next time!

Up, caffeinated, and sheveled. Off to heave.

< ducks waved cane >
Yes, ma’am!

So normal behavior. : crosses fingers for job(s) :
