I have got to get back out on the streets, sitting at home is expensive! The American Needlepoint Guild is having its annual pattern auction and I do NOT need any more patterns, so I’ve only bid on four. But there are a couple more that are very interesting looking and it is for a good cause…
The interwebz convinced me that we needed a toddler armchair for the fuzzbutts and it arrived today.
Jolene fits much better.
I did restrain myself somewhat, the chair was forty bucks and did come available in different colors. The burnt rose that I thought would look best with Jolene’s fur would have been another thirty bucks, so she got boring old beige.
Hubs just spread grass seed on the front lawn. He’s out in the back now so he can’t see how happy all the birds are.
Another one of those day. I was bounced around, and all the sups trying to give me directions were spitting out so many trains of thought at once they sounded like they wee speaking in tongues. We also had the fire alarm go off at 0600, so that brought things to a screeching halt till the Fire department gave the OK. I did my Senior Day shopping, only need $40 of stuff today.
At one of the hotels I stayed in, there was a little sign next to the in room coffee maker: because sometimes you need a cup of coffee before you go and get a cup of coffee
Probably thinking about his next trip
Laptop or PC, anything with a keyboard. Hmmm…I should see if my old blackberry still runs.
A certain pilot years ago introduced me to the relief and joy of little Bluetooth keyboards for tablets. Made my mumping life much easier. pilot is the man!
Plumbers are here and there are various holes in my walls and floor while they look for the leak (it’s a small one and in an awkward place, so taking some time). At least they say they can hear it so there is one to be found. I’m burrowed into the computer room and trying to stay out of their way.
Have to leave by 5pm to make soccer practice, will let them know so they can plan; I have no trouble leaving them alone in the house, but want to be sure they know it.
Sticky Buns, good news on Annie!
JtC, my grass is also short and brownish right now, but I am sticking to my vow not to mow until April…which is next week, dammit… And GG looks rather regal on that chair.
Oopsie, concur n waiting for tomorrow and letting the blisters heal some more. Happy Batwing building! ’
Twobob, thanks for the clarification; I recently discovered that a cubic centimeter is the same amount as a milliliter. Science!!
Wheelie, it was good timing, so we could be here for you.
FCM, my PC is first, second and often third choice.
And need to find some sustenance without unduly troubling the plumbers (why is the leaky stuff always in and around the kitchen?). Take care all.
BBBoo - my google-fu has failed me, but maybe you know where to look. I know recruits now get MMR, among other shots, during boot camp. But I can’t find anything about what they gave in the early 70s. I did see where anyone born before 1957 is presumed to have immunity because everyone got measles back then. Anyway, I don’t know if I ever got MMR and I don’t know if it’s necessary. I’ll talk to my doc at my appt in May, but in case you know something…
Having emptied the dishwasher and the household trash, I’ve used up all my motivation! But I still need to get my car ready for tomorrow. I really shouldn’t keep putting it off.
With a quick search, this was the best I could find, except I couldn’t find any way to crank the info back to what the services did for?/to? recruits specifically in the early ‘70s. They well may have used the same technique of checking immune titers and vaxing for any a recruit was insufficiently immune to per the blood draw lab titers. Plus all the additional vaxes that service did over and above what mere civilians got. Sounds like the army had a slightly different protocol than some of the other services for instance, plus vaxes you might get specific to your region of deployment.
Which Vaccines Do You Get When You Join the Military?
But don’t folks get a lot of vaccines when they join the military?
It depends…
Whether you join the Army, Navy, Air Force, Marine Corps, or Coast Guard, health personnel will evaluate your immunity status by checking your titers to routine vaccine-preventable diseases. So no, if you were wondering, it doesn’t seem like they just check the vaccine records that you might bring from your pediatrician.
And then once they assess your immunization or immunity status, you will get vaccinated:
upon accession – adenovirus, influenza, meningococcal, MMR, Tdap, and chicken pox
during the first or second half of collective training – hep A, hep B, and polio (if needed, although a dose of IPV after age 18 is required) and other vaccines based on risk
So, in addition to getting caught up on all routine vaccines that they might be missing, there are other “military vaccines” that they might need, including:
Went to the Walgreens and picked up a refill on the antibiotic meds I have to take before going to any dental appointment. It’s the downside of having knee replacement, taking a megadose (400mg) for the rest of one’s life. When I was leaving, a cop had pulled up and had confronted a woman in the store. I suspect she may have been loitering in there with a possible intent of shoplifting. There was no drama going on, just him talking to her and blocking her exit avenue.
Hit the grocery for necessities (mostly).
The wife’s niece is coming for a visitation tomorrow. Then on Sunday we drive over to WI to youngest son’s house for a family gathering. He’s making chili.
More crazy weather on the way. It’s supposed to hit 78F tomorrow, then drop to 41F on Saturday with possible snow/rain mix.
I think you and I came across some of the same sites. I was a Vietnam Era veteran, but it was a safe bet that us girls weren’t heading to the war zone, so we were spared some shots. Mostly what I remember were the guns they used to inject us and that I got all woozy and wound up sitting on the curb with my head between my knees. No other reactions, thankfully, and I was fine shortly thereafter.
Just on a whim, I took a look at my DD214, but it doesn’t say anything about vaccinations, not that I expected it to. My shot record is long lost - it was over 50 years ago, after all…
I should ask my mom if I ever had the measles - she might remember.
I did have the measles and assume that I also got a measles shot when I was in basic. I’m not sure if I had gotten the MMR before and know that I haven’t had Rubella before. Rubella is fairly mild and most adults recover easily so I kinda forgot about it until recently.
However, while folks like you and I understand how important vaccinations are, many of the young adults out in the world today were not vaccinated as children because their parents were too young to live through measles and chicken pox but old enough to benefit from herd immunity.
So, that pregnant young lady next to me at the grocery store might very well be unvaxxed and getting infected with Rubella at the wrong stage of her pregnancy could have life long consequences for both her and her unborn child.
Besides getting shots is a good excuse to enjoy a fancy drink far too early in the day.
Jolene thinks I bought her a good bird watchin’ chair.
Next time you go, take a walk down the aisle marked “birth control”. Our local one has more adult toys than a Castle Boutique!
Jolene is totally comforttabuhls in her new chair!
The only think I like to do on my phone is text and play music. I prefer the iPad for everything. I’m trying to decide if I need a new laptop. The hinges connecting the keyboard and screen have disintegrated. A common problem amongst HPs. I definitely prefer typing on a keyboard.
Holy schmoly that’s a lot of replies for me to catch up on! Will do so when I give the canine mop back to her person. Right now he’s working on a snack, but that won’t last long.
I popped in to say, JtC, that I’m sorry to hear that the damage to your limbs was more serious than originally thought. What anwarrior you are, moving around on a broken limb with muscle damage to another! You just rest now so you can store up your super powers.
I’d bett—Whoa! Mr. Max finished his treat, jumped onto the coffee table (a no-no), and slid across its length before landing on the carpet! Shades of G.G.!
FCM: I hate using my phone if I can use a larger screen & real keyboard.
My only computer now is a Surface Pro with their “Typepad” cover / keyboard. So it’s more or less a laptop, just one you can peel the keyboard off and use the display part like an e-book or iPad. That’s what I’m typing on now. The on-screen keyboard when the physical one is detached is gross. Useable for a few words or filling out a basic name & address form, but gross and frustrating to use. Just like an iPad.
I also have a docking station with a ~21" monitor that now rarely gets use. But when I need to build a big spreadsheet, or do taxes with 6 open windows or whatever, I dock the Surface there and have dual monitors. Which makes anything needing to cross reference between windows or apps sooo much easier.
Hi all, and welcome to midafternoon Thu on a gloriously warm superbly clear spring afternoon.
Wed was pleasant then GF came over. Then things got very pleasant. Had a simple Mom’n’Pop Italian dinner late, and eventually sent her home at 1pm today after a lazy breakfast. Seems pretty clear to me that I’ve hooked her and reeled her in. And she’s a live one. I think she thinks she’s hooked and reeled in a live one too. I think she’s right.
Just need to work past the present hassle of her huge todo list and her less than ideal distance from my place. Both of those are problems measured in months, not years. Meanwhile …
Called my mom and she doesn’t remember if I had measles. I’ll talk to my doctor next time and see what she suggests.
Speaking of the call, once I asked my question, it was pretty much her monolog for the next 45 minutes. Kinda typical of calls with her. So I heard more about my niece’s inlaws than I need to know. That’s my mom.
35 posts in under 6 hours? I’m only about halfway through what came in since I went back to bed a little after 7am (not that it helped a lot). Had to call out due to ZERO sleep last night. I wasn’t going to chance driving to work after being awake over 24 hours straight, let alone AFTER a workday (assuming I stayed awake through the day).
Laptop. The screen size is a lot easier on my eyes, and I’m a touch typist so strongly prefer an actual keyboard.
The plumbers have departed and they report the leak fixed…I’ll do some testing tonight and see about that…but they’ll be back tomorrow to concrete the holes in the slab and put the dishwasher back. I’ll have to get the flooring people out to stretch the carpet back down and replace a couple tiles in the kitchen, but all told much less work and bother than before. Now if it takes…
About an hour to kill and then to the soccer field to meet my 9 year old team. Be glad to get out of the house…doing nothing can be a chore at times…
When I took the overseas job in Ab Dhabi in 1999, they sent me to the medical center at the base and pumped me full of shots, pretty sure the MMR was among them…have to see if I can find my shot record from then. Plus I had measles, mumps and rubella when I was growing up so I should be doubly protected.
JtC, you are right, that is a good bird-watching chair. Don’t thnk GG is getting it back anytime soon…
Pilot, sounds like you move as fast as the jets you flew. Best wishes and may this one work out well.
Nettie, take care, you made the wise call, exhaustion can lead to missteps and that is not good for your health and well-being.
Guess I need to start rounding up all the soccer junk and put it in my car for the nexttwo months. Catch you this evening if I survive the young’uns…
