Old game identification

I once played this vertical scrolling starship game (like Raiden, Tyrian, Ikaruga, etc.). I can’t remember what year it was I played it, or even what system I played it on. All I have to go on is that you’re in space (part or all of the time), and that one of the weapons is this lightning gun that shoots three beams (don’t know if this is its original form, or upgraded), and if it hits something it’ll stay locked onto it (I believe this lightning gun is portrayed on the box art or title screen or something).

Any idea what the game was?

Raiden Trad, maybe? IIRC, one of the weapons is a purple laser that locks on to a target, while arcing around the screen and doing damage to whatever other victims it touches.

No, it’s not that. The weapon is blue, it looks like a bolt of electricity, and the weapon (as I remember it) had three beams, in a |/ configuration. Each bolt only hits one enemy at a time; if something interrupted the bolt it would become the weapon’s new target.

Not sure if it will help or not, but you can go to www.mame.net and look at the list of games. They have over 4000 old games available, and maybe the name will ring a bell for you.

Sounds vaguely like R-Type.

Well, the only way I’m going to know for sure is by seeing a screenshot; I have absolutely no recollection of its name.

Mr. Ash, it’s not R-Type either. That’s a horizontal scrolling shooter, and the game I played was vertical.

Truxton for the Sega Genesis/MegaDrive?

I agree. It has to be Truxton.
What a game.
(in the arcade that is - it was rubbish on the megadrive)

Caverns of Mars? I remember it was a vertical scroller. Only screenshot I could find is here and it isn’t very good.

I guess it’s either Truxton or something very similar to it. The lightning weapon looks about right. The box art is similar too, although my memory of it is a little bit different. But, you know how time can distort memories…

Can’t be Caverns of Mars, it didn’t have anything resembling three-way lasers or target-locking capabilities.

Fun game, but bears as much resemblance to the OP as Michael Jackson does to Bill Cosby.
