(Old) Gunpowder, Treason and Plot in the MMP

Went and picked up the milk we forgot to get yesterday, then filled up the car with some of that good Trump twodollarnotreallythreedollartwenty gasoline. I’m so tired of all the winning.

Ordered an egg poacher. I can’t remember the last time I had poached eggs on toast.

So I was on the 300 Slide today, since that clerk called out. Not a lot in damages today, so I was out early. Which was good, considering when I did my Senior Day shopping, I kept getting stuck behind Captain Tightpants, and Listman. The upstairs’ neighbor’s dog has been barking for 2 hours straight.

Boss should listen to the guardian and not Evil Coworker.

James: “Is this the Blood of Chirst?”
Thomas: “I doubt it.”

Walking in Spain, I think. Though you’d think she would have walked past at least one cell tower by now.

Spot pays $20 a month. Or rather, I pay $20 a month for the freeloading slacker to live here.

I know groceries are expensive, but hiring a thief is a bit extreme.

Feel better, red!

'Tis a thing here now, sadly, though many places just outright prohibit pets. They want an extra deposit and some charge an increased rent.

I always had to request permission when I was renting- every lease officially prohibited them- I did get permission for mice, but they were clear it was no cats or dogs, just small cage pets.

Scotland seems slightly better for renters, but we still have a running joke at work that science is basically driven by early career researchers desperately trying to get promoted to the point they can buy their own place so they can get a cat.

The lab gods were not kind today, and I left early with a headache.

Shifting to pets in Ireland…

Here’s a new development on the cat front:

(For the imgurless, cat on top of a bookshelf. A tall bookshelf. Like seven feet.)

Teach for a while, then final orchestra rehearsal tonight. Saturday will be a sleeping-in kind of day.

They do that, don’t they?

Howdy, all! It has been a looooong week. Over the past few days I’ve read all of the preceding 146 posts, but due to exhaustion my short-term memory is crap at the moment. Boos, yays, and hugs as appropriate.

Election day went pretty smoothly. There was never a wait for a privacy booth, but there was a steady stream of voters; the few lulls didn’t last more than 5 min each. That definitely helped the time pass, but also meant I was extra tired by the time I got home because I’d been actively engaging with the general public (aka “on”) all day. Everyone was friendly and patient (I love my neighborhood), but my assigned role was helping people who needed to vote provisionally so each interaction required a lot of focus/energy. It was a 16.5-hour day: I left my house at 4:45am and got home just before 9:15pm. I always underestimate how tired I’ll be the day after, and it’s a little worse each time (as I get older); it’s almost to the point where I need to take the next day off work, too. I think I’m going to start skipping the summer primary elections, and only work November elections going forward.

Yesterday started with my shower handle refusing to turn the water on, which I really didn’t need after such a long day and while being so tired. I couldn’t work from home because there was an all-day “tech expo” at the office and I was manning a table (and giving one of the online presentations), so I pulled my hair back and did a kind of sponge bath. That afternoon I contacted the guy who fixed my washing machine back in July: he was able to come out, and got to the house at 6:30pm. I had a working shower again three hours (and two trips by him to Home Depot) later. I knew I was taking a chance by going with a handyman vs calling an emergency plumber, but everything worked out and he charged me less than $300…about what the emergency service call fee alone would have been. I was totally exhausted by the time he left, so I just crashed; this morning’s shower felt goooood.

The main water shutoff is in the foundation crawlspace, and the guy was able to confirm the absence of the neighborhood cat: so, once the water was turned back on he was able to completely seal the access panel. The space under my house is no longer a critter hotel! Yay!

I’m still tired today, but mostly functional again. I’m looking forward to going home in a couple of hours: I’ll work from home tomorrow morning and head to NJ in the afternoon, and I won’t be back at this desk for 11 days. I’ll work remotely on Monday and Wednesday, though.

My brain is already starting to shift into “trip” mode: on Tuesday I remembered to ask the post office to hold my mail for the week, and this morning I updated my packing checklist. On the way home I’ll make stops for gasoline and cash. While I work tomorrow morning I’ll do laundry, and then I’ll pack. Time permitting I’ll get the car washed before I hit the road, but I can live without that if I start feeling like it’s time to head north.

I hope everyone has a good end of the week! I’m hoping to jump in again (and maybe even be interactive) from NJ this weekend.

Thanks for thinking of us! I’m back from Spain. My lovely wife and I each have our own time-consuming medical issue going on, so I haven’t had time to participate much. Thinking of all of you, though!

It’s a quarter past one, and it’s dark and rainy.

Findus is in CatMom’s room sleeping on the back of her chair. Goo is curled up beside me. Abbey’s out in the catio. (I went out on my lunch break and gave her pets until she decided I’d loved her enough for one sitting.)

We should go out for Mexican food tonight. Also, it’s National Nacho Day.

Howdy Y’all from Statesboro. I’ve been in my room for about an hour. It’s what I expected from Red Roof. Plus it’s about two miles from where I need to be tomorrow. One disappointment on the way; Sweat’s bbq is no longer open. I settled for a Mclunch instead cause it was there and I was hongry and needed to pee. The drive was just over four hours and google maps did good gettin’ me here. OYKW was glad to know I made it. He said now he could concentrate on the two day orgy.

Lily thanks for checkin’ in. Hope lovely wife and you are over the medical issues soonest.

I refused to have dancing at my wedding, but 3 years later my friend got married and had the chicken dance at her wedding. This was in the mid-1990s. Her reception was technically at the library, but it actually in the event hall on the top floor.

Somewhat related, this year I learned that what Americans call a conga line is called a Polonaise in German.

{{{red}}} Hope the disturbance is getting better. Good thing sis is nearby. Somehow I think Nelson’s nursing skills may be a bit limited.

While I’ve never had a cat myself, my understanding is the answer is why a cat does something is easy. It’s a cat. And a cat will do what it darn well pleases. Pretty kittye.

Thank you for your work. Regarding the tiredness, this year we finally decided that we’re no longer trying to go to work on the day after concerts. We’re going to a rock concert on Sunday and are taking Monday off. Otherwise our tails will be dragging.

Mmm, nachos. Did you know they are named after Ignacio Anaya? My grandboss is named Ignacio, so it seems that I often have nachos on my mind. The International Nacho Day is October 21st, so I should have celebrated then. I think we have chips and cheese, but that will have to be for tomorrow, as it’s almost 23:00 here.

Well, bummer. Somehow a Mclunch doesn’t seem to be as good.

Hubby had band, so today’s been a long day. Need to find a blanket for the bed - I think I woke up early because it was chilly in the bedroom. I like fresh air, and I plan on keeping the window open (just a smidge), but it means I need another blanket. Doesn’t bother hubby, as I’m between him and the window.

Nite!

As a matter of fact, I did!

Too late to edit:

As of today, I’ve been informed of the Chicken Dance. (I only watched a little bit of the child dancing it in the video, so I’m ‘informed’ rather than ‘exposed’.) I’ve known the Hokey Pokey since my late-20s or early-30s. I’ve seen the Bunny Hop in movies (Marty (1955), I believe). Alley Cat? NY-NY? (I guess ‘New York-New York’ is too long a name to fit the rhythm.) Bristol Stop? Never heard of them.

My sprinklers arrived and the landscape got a good, hourlong drink. I’ll do it again tomorrow.

I’ve been trying to book the Panama Canal cruise and the Princess website is being difficult. So tomorrow after we get home from the vet (booster shot for the doofus) I’ll call and get it all set up the old fashioned way. Well, after I try on line one more time.

The cruise starts in San Diego, and we’ll go a few days early to have a look around. I was stationed there half a century ago - I expect it’s changed a bit… I know from Google street view that my apartment building no longer exists, but I remember the address, so I can at least see where it was. Just for giggles, I looked up room prices at the Hotel del Coronado. HAHAHAHAHAHAHA!! That ain’t gonna happen.

Plenty of time to work out those details, tho. For now, I need to get the trip booked.

Supper was good. Dishwasher is washing. Chillage is the plan for the evening.

Hey guys, I’m glad to see everyone is still posting and that the world is still normal somewhere.

While I’ve never gotten paid for protesting, I hate him for free, it seems as though there are several legal defense funds out there for folks like me. That’s a good thing because the way it is now, as long as I sit down and shut up, all will be forgiven. Seeing as how I’ve never been able to sit down and shut up in my life, I see no reason to start now.

We keep having to go back for my upper plate too. It doesn’t fit right and has gone back to the lab several times. This time it went back with pictures and arrows along with a very strongly worded memo.

I sat down with Mom’s will and it is horrifying. She hasn’t listed who is getting anything but the money and the house. She’s got furniture, a car, jewelry and assorted family keepsakes for everyone to fight over. Where her assets are is also not listed, I (or whoever is the executor when that horrible day comes) will need to know where her money is and how to access it. I need to know about credit cards as well.

At least Aldi had 12 packs of assorted hard ciders available, it is good stuff. They also had cranberries, so I bought a bag and put some in a pint bell jar and covered them with Capt Morgan’s spiced rum. I’m forcing myself to wait for a whole week before tasting them, so I have that to look forward to.

A loong day. I was awakened at 4:30 by the sound of a horking dog. She had escaped the bedroom, gone downstairs and chewed the front of the couch. Like the reclining foot-rest bit. Granted it is the couch she uses more than I do, but still. Late night sheddage and subsequent horking is not a great look for a dog.

Why you gotta shred things? There are so many dog toys around on the floor that I have to be careful walking.

I’m off tomorrow, covering for my boss on sundy. But I gotta go to the high school after dog class on saturday.

Swampy Glad the drive was un-eventful, if long.

JtC The cranberries sound delish! What do you use them in? I’m picturing either floating in a cocktail or in vanilla ice cream.

I had never heard of the chicken dance until 7th grade. We moved from a place that really was in the “Preppy Handbook” to a largely French-Canadian town between 6th and 7th. I thought the CD was a french thing for a long time.

What is this “common sense” oif which you speak?

I’ve had to put down a deposit, but never had to pay a monthly charge!

A decade or two behind the times, as usual – never heard of either of those two. Now that I have, should I be impressed?

Haven’t the slightest idea what the Chicken dance is, either. Though I do know that the kids in Bristol are sharp as a pistol when they do the Bristol Stomp.

Sounds like our cats. Nandi likes to lie on his back and move his feet on the ceiling so he looks like he’s walking upside down. And he and Eraser both like to nap on top of the kitchen cabinets.

Didn’t sleep well Monday night, so staying awake through snout counting was difficult, but I did manage it. Think Lady SCAdian said we only had about a 10-12% turnout in our district, but there were still rather more voters than she had expected to see for an off-year election. Don’t think a single Republican or Independent candidate got elected in this town.

My mom used to poach eggs in milk (no poacher involved) and put them on toast topped by the warmed milk, butter, salt and pepper. I do it now and again for a comfort meal.

Channeling the ghost of Gordie, perhaps?

That’s Nelson’s tab too, along with the non-refundable $300 that I fronted him.

I hope that they are kinder tomorrow.

Hugs to both of you.

Dang! They put out some really good 'cue.

Yeah, the lack of a driver’s license and opposable thumbs relegates him to moral support.

pavo, your athletic kitteh is pretty.

That, the conga and the hokey pokey were all staples for weddings in my home parish.

Sis came by with the care package, along with a quart of butternut squash soup that she made yesterday (tasty, but easy on the belly). She got down on the floor and played with Nelson some. He’d get all lovey and wiggly playing with her, then come running over to me as if to say I still love you too Mom!. The pepto has quelled the nausea and I think it’s beginning to do its thing on the lower GI. I’m so ready to have this over with! Thank you all for your get well vibes!
