(Old) Heading to the land of penguins in the MMP

Actually all cars always have 4-wheel stop. The gotcha is that 4WD is better than 2WD, but 4wheel stop is the same whether you’re in 2WD or 4WD. So more go with no more stop. Leads to overconfidence for sure.

Howdy Y’all! We procured provisions and then slothed the rest of the day. I made some good taco soup if’n I do say so myself.

Taters hope you feel better soonest. I am sure the place did not fall apart yestiddy, but there was probably much hand wringin’ because you were not there.

BooFae I feel so educated about scones now. Maybe I should convince OYKW we should have teatime. We should invite JDD and Partner. Then I could look down upon them as they struggle while I prepare scones the proper way. Bein’ snooty while eatin’ the perfect scone would be a win-win!

MetalMouse I love the terms great room and library. I have a livin’ room and a study, which is really the third bedroom. I should start referrin’ to them as the great room and library. Hmmm… maybe drawin’ room and study. I could be super snooty and say we’re havin’ tea in the drawin’ room.

shoe yay for gettin’ car dug out of the snow and yay for your friend for gettin’ to work out some frustrations by doin’ so.

My son is like me in that he wants to learn everything there is to learn, but I was never that mentally rigid. I was obsessed with reading and writing (still am.) I remember being pretty comfortable with ambiguity and nuance (still am.) I want to explore everything, he wants to catalog it. I suspect he’s more like his father in this way. His father is very methodical in his thinking, whereas the inside of my brain looks like splashing a bunch of paint randomly onto a canvass and trying to interpret the result. Yet my son and I were both very solitary children and neurodiverse in our own way and both wanting to have mastery over our own inner worlds, so on some level, I get it. I mean, you’re talking to a woman who escapes regularly into a world where she has godlike powers to control everything that happens to everyone. I’m sure that’s perfectly normal.

Evening all. Managed to spend the entire day indoors, I admit it was strange as I had developed the habit of going to the gym most every weekday so staying inside was quite different. Only had to look at the street and remember yesterday’s near-stuck-in-the-ice to quench any desire I had to venture forth. Did reach 27F today and supposed to make it to 42F with rain tomorrow, so might get out for a bit then.

Carpet people pushed my carpet re-stretch back to next Tuesday and haven’t heard back from the dentist or the the plumbers (to be fair, they might not have been able to get to the office and probably have a long list to go through), but I’ll call tomorrow and see how the schedule is shaping up. Might also call Handyman, Inc., for a couple minor repairs and get on their schedule, too. Ah, the joys of home ownership.

Great Room is a term I learned when I moved down South, up North it was just the living room. My ‘library’ is actually the dining room which opens onto the great room and since dining isn’t my thing, I made it my library. My third bedroom is my ‘office’, where i have a desk, computer, and file cabinets among other things. It works for me.

flyboy, that’s a pretty good snowfall. Stay safe and be sure to keep Spousal Unit away from implements of destruction.

Spicey, best wishes for you and Wee Weasel. Not being a parent (at least Pilot has all those kids Daugher-in-Law fosters to learn from) I cannot offer any meaningful advice but you obviously care a lot and are getting him the proper assistance, so just bear with it; you’ll be amazed at how fast they grow.

shoe, glad that you are vehiculary mobile again. And I can relate to co-worker, from the vantage point of decades down the road. Hope he can break free.

red, glad (and relieved) you made it to work and back. Have they done any treatment to the streets there?

OK, ham-n-cheesers have been consumed as I type this, so back to the internetting and then maybe take a last hack at the Sunday NY Times crossword (got about 85% of it solved) before retiring for the night. Take care all.

I’m not even sure what a drawing room is. My grandparents when I was growing up had a door that slid into the wall of their house between the kitchen and dining room. I could never figure out what the hell that door was for, but I always picture that sliding door when I hear drawing room.

I like great room. We have a big ass great room that opens into the kitchen and dining area. I dig the open floor plan.

We have three bedrooms. Wee Weasel is in bedroom #2. My husband’s home office is in bedroom #3 (thanks to COVID - now half of his clients are virtual) so my home office is in our master bedroom. I don’t love having an office in my bedroom, but I’ve made the best of it. I created a sort of minimalist space with plants and candles that doubles as quiet office environment and quiet meditation/sleeping space. Quiet being the operative word.

We ended up with about a foot or so of snow. I haven’t been out since my so-called ‘lunch’ (Car-Car Shuffle and snow clearing from the tents), and it’s too deep to conveniently go out and stick a yardstick in.

Very little. My street wasn’t bad, but when I got out to the main drag, it was terrible. I’m a bit worried. We’re supposed to get above freezing for a fleeting moment tomorrow, then the temp will drop like a rock for the weekend and put a layer of ice on top of the snow that they haven’t done much plowing on. We have an 0730 start tomorrow, so at least I’ll be traversing the streets in the daylight.

Happy Hump Day!

It’s cold outside.
We got about 3 inches of snow. The dogs like it.
I don’t.

I told my son, if he gets off in the middle of the night, don’t call me. I’m not going out then. He can wait until morning or he can call a cab.
Our road got plowed, but there are icy patches on it.
If I had my way, I would sit inside until spring. Unfortunately, life isn’t going my way.

Tired of dealing with other people’s screw up.

There’s no way I am going to catch up with y’all.

Happy Travels FCM
I’m glad your mother made it home.

Doggio, I was going to suggest taking Ace to the dog park, but I see you have. It really makes a difference. I’ve read that walking a dog can never really burn up the same energy as a romp in the park. I think it depends on the breed though. The GR haven’t been to the park since Friday, and they are making me crazy. Even though they have a nice big yard and they run and play a lot, it’s still not the same. I guess they need the change of scenery and to meet some of their friends.

Reading comprehension is at an all time low tonight.

My dad has to have brain surgery.

He called me earlier today to tell me he’d actually called the ambulance himself because he kept falling. He told me that he’d let me know if they admitted him. When he called tonight, I asked if they’d admitted him and he said no, they’re transferring him because they don’t do brain surgery where he is.

I don’t have any details beyond the fact that he has a brain bleed. I don’t know how bad or when the surgery will be or anything else. He’ll let me know more when he knows more.

I’m surprisingly ok regarding the news. I think it’s because I’ve come to terms with the fact that he won’t be around for much longer. I don’t know what to expect from surgery, recovery or anything else. So I’m just waiting until I know more.

Oh my goodness. Please keep us informed.

Very serious question: how long would it be for him to simply walk home?

Bonus question: who pays for the cab?

Aww, sweetie. I am so sorry.

Bonus points if you pull off a monocle. :face_with_monocle:

I’ve spent the last hour anna half trying to convince myself to either go to the Gettin Sto’ (since I have functional wheels again) or to get the hell cleaned up around my kitchen.

Including pointing out to myself that if I had started either task back then, I’d be done with it by now!

… but I just donwanna, especially on someone else’s schedule.

Stoopit Wal-Mart, closing at 11 p.m. instead of being 24 hrs like it was back when I was young before the damn world ended. I don’t like shopping on a time crunch, and not all of us are in bed at sundown.

Evenin’ all.

Truefish I’m sorry to hear about Dad, but pleased you’re taking a calm approach of equanimity. Sounds like Dad is too.

Sari I’m very happy to hear you telling Sonny that getting home is his problem, not yours. Not that I wish ill upon the man, but rather that I wish good upon you.

Shoe: Hooray for getting the car going again and on the store run you’re probably making right now.

As I recall the origin story of “great room”, back in the 60s / 70s ordinary suburban houses got big and ordinary people began having both a formal “living room” and an informal “family room”. Which led to all the jokes about the living room being the one room no one, but especially kids, was ever allowed into; it was purely for guests to admire from afar.

Eventually interest rates rose, buyers got squeezed, and the real estate developers got wise to the need to downsize and make their houses live more efficiently. So they decided to combine the square footage of the two large rooms into one “great room” and the formal company-only living room bit the dust in new construction suburbia coast to coast. Which change was mostly a 1980s development.

As to me:
Had a pleasant day. Made actual progress this morning on several admin tidbits. Went down by the beach for beer & snacks with a pilot friend in late afternoon. Gray, windy, and 70-ish. So great in long pants and a couple layers including a sweatshirt. A few brave souls were beaching, but not many. Had 2 dancing sessions this evening. Now enjoying a scotch & some 'Dope. Some combo of snack and bedtime is next.

So sorry to hear this~sending strength and peaceful thoughts to both of you :candle::candle::candle::candle:

From this grizzled old night nurse’s viewpoint, it might not be as bad as it first sounds. If he was in serious danger they would have admitted him there immediately and monitored him closely until he could be transferred to where surgery could be done. If they are doing watchful outpatient waiting while looking for a neurosurgical bed for him that’s a good sign.

Let us know when you know more, like where the bleeding is, sub dural, sub arachnoid, stable, increasing (if it was increasing he’d be in an icu bed, not being a non-admitted outpatient).

I know this is really unnerving and scary, let your Mumper friends stand by you and hold your hand.

Heck, I’m not always asleep by sunrise.

Waves at everyone. Truefish, I am so sorry about your dad. Shoe, I’m glad you have a car again and Flyboy.…just wow.

I’m still on my tablet, I am really regretting that I told hubs about my comp issues. Left to my own devices, I would have gone to town and bought a fan, brought it home and replaced it. Twenty bucks, done and done.

Even without the fan, my comp was usable, I just risked overheating if I started gaming. I’m good with that, I could have waited until Friday for the fan (because that’s when I was planning on getting more imaging done on my hands).

Hubs took my tower to an authorized repair place in the valley who agreed that it was still under warranty and would replace the fan with no charge and it would be ready next week.

He brought my tower back home and took it apart on the kitchen island, then put a screwdriver through the web of his right hand while trying to catch it after letting it roll off the island.

Of course medical attention was refused. If he gets tetanus and they have to cut his hand off, I am NOT going to help him wipe his butt.

In other news, today was surplus produce and one of the ladies I take wanted to walk home after we got our boxes, so we put her very cool collapsible wagon in my trunk and off we went. People stop going in the winter, it’s too cold and dark to get dressed to go and get a couple of free lettuces, so the line is always much shorter this time of the year. I was worried that the wagon loading delay would put us too close to the end of the line, but we were OK.

The volunteers fill all of the boxes the same until they can see the last car. Then the boxes get really full and hard to deal with, so I try to stay in the middle of the line.

Today’s box included two large packages of off brand string cheese, many Fiji apples, a mess of potatoes, three bags of chips, several loaves of bread and two pounds of ground turkey. I don’t have the patience to make string cheese, but I am more than willing to complain if commercial stuff isn’t up to my standards so I gave it to the family across the street.

I took a bag to CG, but haven’t heard from NF as to what she wants. This concerns me, she is usually very responsive, but she’s been sick with the “flu” for the last three weeks and I haven’t heard from her recently. If she isn’t at TaiChi tomorrow, I’ll go over to her place and bang on the door.

Real Fish, so sorry to hear about your Dad’s problems, I hope it is something treatable and he comes through fine. {{{hugs}}} to you and yours.

Sari, I think you did the right thing, sometime or other the Kid must start taking on responsibilities for his own well-being and there is no time like the present.

red, we’re due to have about 24 hours of above freezing temps here, so hoping the roads clear and dry out in that time. At least after tomorrow there is no precipitation due until next week and it should be much warmer then. We’ll see what happens.

10pm and I need to do some puzzle solving before sleepage. Take care all.

We do have snow, but it’s not that cold. I think I heard that in the U.S. South and Southwest it’s colder than a Republican’s heart.

May I suggest wearing a KN94 or N95 mask when you do? Perhaps with a couple of Covid tests to give her. “Flu” for 3 weeks could also be Covid with a contagious rebound or RSV. None of those 3 do you want. Stay outside in the fresh, moving air, mask or not.

Consider wearing a mask at Tai chai if something is going around town. [big talk from me~today I forgot to wear a mask at the public library when I taught my refugee literacy class~oops]

Cases of Covid and RSV are rising fast everywhere.

Hubs isn’t likely to get tetanus from the screwdriver unless it was rusty and it recently had been digging outside in the dirt. If he does get tetanus, it won’t be his hand he’ll lose. The mortality rate on tetanus approaches 20% in invaccinated folks our age.I suppose getting him to get a TAP booster every 10 years is out of the question (given his propensity for bloody injuries)?

Oh…did I forget to say anything about food tasting bitter? Yeah, I’m sure it is her third bout with Covid. I’ve gotten used to people I love not caring if they get sick or die. Well, it still pisses me off, but I’ve learned that I can’t logic people out of emotional choices.

All I can do is protect myself.

That’s all I care about. Call me cold-hearted but that’s what I care about too: jane buries us all!
