(Old) Hello, Mr Sandman - Dreaming in the MMP

My day took an unexpected turn. But a good one.

I packed up my used electronics in a handy shopping bag. Halfway to my first stop of breakfast I realized it was still sitting on the counter at home. :man_facepalming: So no trip to the distant recycling center for me. At least not this time.

At breakfast I read my fine fellow mumpers’ suggestions about Staples and Best Buy. Both of which we have and both much closer to home. Hooray and thank you both! So once fed and properly hugged by the breakfast staff, I knocked off a couple of other serendipitous errands, and visited my erstwhile dinner companion at his office to commiserate a bit and drop off the gift I’d intended to give him Sunday night.

Then back home. I’ve since called the local Staples and they do do e-recycling. There’s a decent pub across the street from Staples that I haven’t eaten at in quite awhile. So current plan is drop off the stuff on the way to the pub for early dinner in a couple hours. If I can remember to put the bag in my car. :man_facepalming:

It’s a Windows Surface Pro 11. So a full-up PC in capability, but with the lightness and battery life of a tablet. And with a real keyboard that doubles as a screen cover. All the capability of a desktop or laptop PC, but vastly more portable than even a small laptop. I got rid of my last desktop back around 2010 and my last laptop around 2018. As Tony The Tiger says: They’re Grrreeeaaatttttt!

Wow Carnak, except for the pickles you nailed it!

Tape a note to the door, or your car keys, or anything you’ll be taking with you. That’s my sure-fire method of reducing the chance that I’ll forget. Not foolproof, but…

In a fit of domesticity, I did some rollsuckage and I gathered all the household trash. I also flipped the rollsucker over and discovered a gawd-awful mess of hair and yarn wrapped around the beater bar. So armed with scissors, I cut it all off. It had to be a couple of years since I’d done this, and pretty much all of the hair wrapped around it was mine as I’ve worn it long for quite some time. Well, it’s all gone and I think I had more successful roll-suckage - I certainly got up a lot of cat hair. I need to check the roller more often.

I think I’ve earned some chillage time.

I didn’t have breakfast until after nine o’clock; partly because I was irking, and partly because I didn’t know what to have. I finally made an avocado, tomato, and provolone sandwich. Now it’s coming up on noon, and I’m not hungry.

Since I live alone and don’t have to worry about other people using the front and only door, I make a pile of stuff directly in front of the door. I can’t get out except by sweeping all that stuff out of my way to get the door open. For small things I do as you suggest and put my car keys in the pile on the counter. That doesn’t prevent me getting down to my car without my stuff, but it does prevent driving away.

Of course a few minutes ago I needed to go down and move my car. I’d left it in temporary parking thinking I’d be going out right away. Now I’m staying in until it’s time for the Staples visit and HH/dinner at the pub.

I got downstairs, started the car, and had an epiphany: “Yanno, I could’ve brought the e-parts down with me just now so I wouldn’t forget them later.” The forgetful obliviousness is strong in this one. :man_facepalming:

Wish me luck. Although I did just cheat by getting up and moving the bag against the front door before posting this msg. See, Mom? I can learn … sometimes. Go me!

Afternoon all. Shopping and sammich have been completed and are in the appropriate places and I’ve just finished a couple hours of soccer planning stuff so will shortly head over to the gym for a later-than-usual workout. Think I will try Arby’s Cheeseburger tonight, I hear that they are pretty good, so we’ll see. Been cloudy all day in that ‘maybe I’ll rain and maybe I won’t’ looking pattern, so far the rain has held off. Only 85F outside…kinda cool for this time of the year.

They are taking down a big (like 30-40 foot tall) tree two houses up and the grinder was parked nearer my house so I got to hear the whole operation. Oh joy.

Pilot, I do the same thing with my car keys, have everything on the same counter, pick up pens, wallet, watch, hearing aid case, phone…and then walk into the garage and realize I’ve left my keys on the counter…do that at least twice a week.

FCM, happy hemming! And thanks for asking and BBBoo for replying regarding shots, being around all the kids this fall getting both the flu and COVID Booster sounds like a practical idea.

Knots, been there, gotten lost like that. Google maps has helped in the past but sounds like that wasn’t an option. And I need a haircut something before Thanksgiving I think…being 80% bald has it’s advantages…

Yep, there were two huge ones when I was last there; Mall of the Emirates (with the Ski Slope) and the Dubai Mall (1,200 stores).

Pilot, a good deed and a pub-n-grub visit. Not bad at all…

And now I must go forth and exercise.

Dang y’all! If I did that with my keys, I’d never find them. They are always in one of three places: the key hook by the door, my right front pocket or my purse. Otherwise, I’d have to put a clapper or air tag on them.

Got the final box count to the movers and ordered the extra insulin for my first month in Texas (the old insurance had it on a 30 day schedule instead of the usual 60 or 90 day). I took out some stuff to the dumpster, packed my duffel for the car and put a couple of boxes in the trunk before scooping up Nelson and going to pick up a Greek side salad and a gyro at Zorba’s for supper. I now know that he likes schwarma. :stuck_out_tongue:

Howdy Y’all! Another rainy(ish) day here which meant another day of high sloth and RDOS inactivities. However I did spend a little while goin’ through various bedroom furniture drawers to tidy ‘em up. Those were my drawers. If OYKW has slovenly drawers, that’s his problem. The biiiiiig trash can got hauled all the way back up the driveway to where it stays. Did the same with driveway neighbor’s trash can cause I am nice, dammit! Sup got fixed and et and OYKW cleanded up the kitchen.

I haven’t been to a maul in a long time. Even then it was in and out of a couple of anchor stores as quickly as possible. I went to the Maul of Amurrka many years ago when I spent the night at a hotel across the way from it. I wandered around for about an hour and was over it. Didn’t even buy anything. It was just too much! Not price wise, just in general.

The exterminator came, and set up three Gopher Hawk traps to kill the mole(s). He showed me how to set them in case I wanted to buy my own.

Finally made it here to say: Today was a pretty good day! Granted, there’s still lots that I don’t know, but there’s a very strong sense of community and many people will go out of their way to help you. It’s pretty nice.

And besides, I do believe this is the best desk ever. Yes?

Best desk accessory!

Oof. My lovely wife and I visited IKEA yesterday and got, among other delightful things, a few new throw cushion covers and some new pillows.

Today spent 4 hours taking the covers off every throw cushion to assess the state of the cushion and of the cover. We are discarding a number of very old cushions. Some new cushions are on order, and then we’ll assess how many covers of what size we need. Then we pulled all of the towels, throw rugs, sheets, pillow cases, blankets, curtains, and similar out of the closets/cabinets, plus all the pillows. We discarded a couple of pillows. We’ve discarded many of these textiles (divvied up between “donate to the art place that takes fabric,” “donate to the animal shelter,” “donate to the human donation place,” and “plan a trip to the waste facility.” I’ve put most of the blankets we’re keeping back in their cabinet or in blanket compression bags I bought a few weeks ago. The towels and area rugs are back in their closet. A set of crummy towels and throw blankets will go into the “can we get cats soon supplies/I am very ill or filthy and need crummy towels” box. I’m washing more stuff to put away or donate now.

Later this week: Sheets, pillowcases, dishtowels, napkins, placemats, tablecloths. We have friends coming soon for a visit (one for 4 days, 1 for about 2 weeks), so this will happen.

Then onward to dusty/sweepy/moppy/what is that at the back of the fridge? tasks.

I need to do this soon. We mostly crammed all of MIL’s stuff in with ours, but it’s out of control. Plus I just bought some new towels and we’ve got soooooo many old ones. I’ll check with the animal shelter to see if they want some of the older ones. And there are at least 3 foam mattress pads and who knows how many blankets and afghans. I did get rid of a bunch of pillows, but there’s more than we need. Fun times ahead.

Well, I had me a scare this afternoon. When FCD came back from the boat, he went to take a shower. A few minutes later, I hear this gawd-awful noise and run back to the bathroom, finding him on the floor of the shower. Apparently he slipped, but luckily, he didn’t hit his head - just his arm. I guess it’s time to get one of those icky shower mats. I hate them, but I’d hate more to have to call 911 for a worse fall.

Naturally, he made light of it. Me, not so much. His physical decline is apparent to me, even if he’s in denial. On the plus side, he fit into the smaller jeans, so there’s that.

Anyway, I’m going to the boat with him tomorrow. He shouldn’t be doing physical stuff alone. I’m I’m starting to really fear that he’s not going to be physically able to do much boating. We’re going to get it all fixed up, then we’ll have to sell it. I just have that feeling.

A little horn tooting …

I’ve hit a few milestones lately.

1 - back in June, I hit 25 years at this ridiculous message board.
B - today is my birthday; I am 60 years old.
and lastly - it’s been a solid decade since I’ve had a drop of alcohol.

So, I’m feeling pretty good today.

Mazel tov on all counts!

Looks like we’re getting closer to paving the road outside our building. They’ve been hauling in clean fill, spreading it, wetting it and compacting all day.

Just got notified via a memo that our facility director is leaving us after 24 years. It’s going to upset a lot of long-term residents, I’m sure. Jennifer has some faults, but she’s generally very good at her job and always has a ready smile for everyone. I’ve noticed dark circles under her eyes of late, so perhaps the job is taking a toll at long last. I hope this doesn’t trigger a flight response by other long-term employees.

Our camera feeds load to our phones if wanted. I just have them in the big shed and the parts of the yard I can’t easily see from the windows. Mrs Harry has a camera mounted on our fence (pointing at the gully) and it is at least a block away from their house. She has more out there and can tell where Harry is without looking out for his raven.

It sounds very invasive, but it does make us happier to be able to easily tell if our menfolk are still on their feet.

I’m so happy that FCD didn’t get hurt. I agree about those horrible mats but they really do help.

Wow, I need to muster up that level of motivation. Go you!

Our cushions are all good, but some of the towels are looking pretty ratty and the linen closet is getting out of control. We also have too much stuff, I used the ratty towels as packing material for the move and they didn’t go away afterwards.

I’d still be working if I had such a great set up! I’m so happy you have gotten over the first day, they are always stressful even if you are smiling all the time.

There were mauls in AZ and I would go into one once in a while, but it was never anything but a chore. We have the Tamarack Marketplace a few hours away, but that’s not really a mall. It is a fun place to visit and spend bunches of money, though. Best memories involved has MIL buying a glass ring holder for me and then 20 years later, meeting Sticky and the glass guy

I used to have a door mat that said “Cell phone? Wallet? Keys?” it worked for a couple of weeks and then it just became part of the scenery.

My keys are hooked to my purse and his are hooked to his belt loop. I also have a hidden key on my car and the usual key rock in the back yard. I used to just leave a spare key under the outside door mat, but one day our housekeeper picked up the mat and swept the walk. She noticed the key and put it on the kitchen counter. I saw the key and thought it was one of Hub’s spare blanks and tossed it into the key bowl.

As you might imagine, that didn’t work out so well, hence the rock.

So, I’ve been spending most of the day frogging a mistake I thought I could overstitch. So many bad words have been thought that I’m surprised my desk hasn’t caught on fire.

More bad words happened when Mom called and told me that she, two of my sisters and one granddaughter were in Ely NV and needed me to find them rooms while they ate dinner. Instead of saying I wouldn’t do it, I lied and said I wasn’t at home and didn’t have my tablet.

It is a start. Someday I’ll put my big girl panties on and tell Mom that she needs to ask her daughters to book their own rooms.

I do both things, brain injuries whack that kind of memory unmercifully, so my keys are either on the key hooks by the door, in my hand walking out to the car, in the ignition or in my bag. And then when my bonked brain forgets to do that I also have an air tag on the keys. An air tag is the best $20 I ever spent considering the angst and panic and ruined plans I’ve been able to avoid.

Hooray!

Evening all. Did make it to the gym and did the obligatory sweating, then stopped at Arby’s for a double burger (not bad, definitely thicker and more meaty than most fast-food places but I’m not a big fan of seasoned curly fries). Have answered some soccer messages and may have the final coach I need to start the season on-time, but I’ll wait until they officially volunteer and get their training done before doing any huzzahs. Never got any rain so we’ll see about tomorrow.

red, sounds like Nelson has pretty discerning taste…or he is secretly a member of The Avengers…

Flyboy, still betting on the Mole(s) for another 2 weeks…

Sticky Buns, Yay! for a good day and a better picture.

Lily, I think I have three pillows in my living room and two on my bed and that’s about all. I probably do have too many towels, but never thought about donating them, thanks for the idea.

FCM, that would be a scare, falls at our age(s) are something to be concerned about anytime. Glad he doing OK, but I fear you may be right about the boat…hope you can get at least a little summer/fall enjoyment from it.

J-Bats, Hippo Birdies Two Ewes!! And you’ve made it to 60…youngster (I’m 72.3). And a good record of sobriety calls for a dr…good slap on the back and congratulations.

Cookie, hope the new director is someone who can take the reins without too much trouble or changes.

JtC, how old are those daughters, 30-40?? Way past time to tell them to put on their big girl pantaloons and book their own damn rooms!! IMHO of course…

And that’s all for now. Closing in on 8pm so no further work is expected and sloth will rule the next several hours. Take care all.

I’m going to take the implied compliment

Nope, none of my sisters are under 60 and the granddaughter is in her early 40’s. I can’t really blame them, Mom asks me to book rooms and plane/cruise tickets and I don’t tell her to do it herself. In the past I would take time off work to be able to sit in front of my comp and do her pre-flight check-ins.

That’s over now, but I’m still not able to just say no! Happily, I am feeling no guilt about lying to her. They can all sleep in her car for all I care.
