(Old) Of Humid Bondage- A Heatwave MMP

You are SO gonna come back home with stuff you hadn’t even imagined existed.

If they have baby chicks, stay away …

… or get hubs to start building a coop.

ETA: gods help you if they have ducklings.

I had no clue. Well, edibles it is!

It is usually used for tamales, but has so many other uses that includes making football shaped tortillas. You can substitute course ground corn meal, but it doesn’t have the same taste.

I quite like looking at trees. I sit out on the porch and stare at the forest or I sit at the kitchen table and stare at the forest, or I wash dishes while staring at the forest. Looking at trees has always been something I enjoyed so am really enjoying looking at the forest surrounding me. (Even when I watch the mist rise in the night and hear The Teddybear’s Picnic in my mind. then it looks pretty creepy.)

You are right. What you are getting (since you are east of the Mississippi) is what Amtrak calls “flex menu”. Nice meals ( a lot like what you might get on a long airplane ride) but ones that are premade meals that are warmed in an oven or micro wave, not as to order or individualized as they can serve on a train with the full kitchen car and serving staff. The western, long route trains also serve on plates that look like the old china Amtrak used to serve on in the good old days. Nice silverware, a flower or two in a bud vase, cloth tablecloth, etc. I’ve only done trains west of the ol’ Miss so that is what I know.

The ‘flex’ dining menu:

An example of ‘traditional’ dining menu, available on most western US long routes:

Coop first, then chicks. Or else you’re gonna have an I Love Lucy rerun on your hands.

When we moved from the center of the city in St. Louis to the edge of suburbia, we found a Tractor Supply in the first small town down the interstate. One doomed to be engulfed by suburbia maybe 15 years hence.

We’d never seen such a place and had a really great time wandering the aisles, picking up strange incomprehensible Martian gizmos and wondering what the hell they were for. Often the packaging gave it a name but that was no help at all. Like Dr. Seuss’s “three-handed family gradunza”, knowing the name gives you no clue what it’s for.

Jane is far more rural-savvy than we ever were. So I bet Tractor Supply won’t be quite the alien retail Disneyland for her that it was for us.

But the more she knows, maybe the more she buys? We’ll all hear about it either way.

He was just at the vet Friday and the vet did look in his mouth, so his teeth are intact. I did manage to get some kibble in him by feeding it to him one piece at time, dipped in peanut butter. Such a neglected pooch. :stuck_out_tongue:

Moooooom, Kohl’s seem to have a few pair she may like. If not, do you sew?

I just ordered 26 pouches of moist (not canned soft) kibble and will see if that will stimulate his appetite.

I’m glad you’re getting the important things settled. Here’s to getting the rest of the place together.

Sunday chores are done and I’ve begun a challenge project in the studio. In my craft rotation, I tend to make sure that I’m hitting various supplies and tools up on a regular basis and some things are challenging to find a use for. The one that I’m working on now came from a 12"X2" of three tone blue color block paper, I’ll get 7 cards from it and I decided on using some of the weird stamps I’ve collected over the years and doing white heat embossing on them, so far, it’s looking decent for non-fancy cards.

Clearly you have never heard of Lake Okiboji in Iowa. Beach Party down! It is such a wild beach party I was never allowed to go there as a teenager (and I was way too compliant as a teenager-I did make up for lost time as soon as I got to St Louis for college).

Don’t feel bad, we’ve got beaches in Nebraska too:

And be really, really careful and circumspect with those ‘cuz Amtrak is federal and the feds don’t take no truck with the devil weed no matter how it is formulated, regardless if it is legal in the state you are in.

The afore-mentioned FB Amtrak fans threads also occasionally mention drug dogs wandering through the big inner city stations and trackside like at Denver, Chicago and New York. I swear, the feds have no sense of humor about it. Which is not to deny I brought a few (like less than 6) edibles back with me on Amtrak from Denver. I was going claim that they were medicinal since a doctor had prescribed them for me (well, he is-always handy to grow your own-doctors as well as beer and cheese). Please don’t narc me out.

Happy Sunday!

No park today and Petey dad takes his mother to church on Sundays.

It was another hot day today, but it’s supposed to cool off a little.

Red, I’ve used Nutri-cal when I had pets that weren’t eating enough. It’s a high calorie supplement gel that comes in a tube, like toothpaste.
I’ve tried gravy toppers, and none of my dogs seemed impressed with them.
Spray cheese is usually a winner, as is a little boiled chicken. I’ve also mixed kitty kibble in with the dog kibble.

I’m glad your Hubbie made it home safely, JtC, and he and GG had a happy reunion.

Happy Travels Wheelie and MetalMouse

My tummy still isn’t right and I think corn may be the problem.
I’ve been keeping track of what I eat, since the issues come and go.
I’ve eaten corn my whole life without any problems, but everything changes.
We got Taco Bell the other day and you’d think if anything was going to cause problems, that would be it. No problem at all.

Trevor and the grands look adorable together!

Are my husband and I the only people in the world who never have tummy troubles with Taco Bell?

Riding the Amtrak from Illinois to Los Angeles (a two day trip) a few years back, DH and I had a roomette. The train had gotten pretty full and they had ended up putting on a second sleeping car, which then ended up only about half full, and we got in that half. It was great, we got a lot of attention from the porter. At one point I asked him if we could take a look in the family room (it wasn’t occupied; there’s one on every sleeper and they sleep I think six). He said, “well I can’t let you in but you know there is a shower in there and sometimes I forget to lock that room up.” Yes, we did check it out; and it was very nice. If I ever win the lottery I’m going to rent the family room and ride and ride.

We had our first date at Taco John’s, another fast food Tex-Mex place. My wife stopped at Taco Bell ONCE and a week later ended up getting inoculations for Hepatitis (I don’t remember what variant) and we never went back.

My son.
Loves Taco Bell and never has issues.

Red - yes, I sew, but no I will not sew pants for her. She needs to get rid of clothes. She’s holding on to her size 12s in case she gains 30 pounds… No matter that she’s been bouncing back and forth between 97 and 100 for a month at least. But I will check out Kohls. Thanks.

MetalMouse - what are your plans in DC? I’d love to meet up but there’s no way, alas.

We went to see Inside Out 2 - it’s ok, I guess. Then we crossed the river to the marina, then home again. MIL was alone for about 4 hours and she thinks she can handle that and more. I had hoped we wouldn’t be longer than 3 hours. In any event, FCD and I are agreed that she needs someone here. Maybe I can talk BIL into visiting his mother more often. But he’s got problems of his own. I plan to call tomorrow about respite care.

Depending on which site you believe, it’s going to rain in the next hour, or at 2AM, or between 4 and 6AM. Or maybe not at all. I just ran the sprinkler for 30 minutes and if it doesn’t rain, I’ll run it again tomorrow.

The rest of today is for chillage.

I used to watch this channel a lot

He travels mostly on trains, but sometimes ferries and planes.
Sometimes cheap, sometimes outrageously expensive.
Not always in Japan.
It’s amazing what can be on a train to make travelers comfortable.

I meant to add, hit replay too soon.

Your old home was quite beautiful, JtC Trees are nice, green is always good.
I don’t miss having trees in my yard though, I don’t have to deal with any bushy-tailed tree rats.
There are some trees behind my yard, but I never see anything in them. There aren’t even many birds around here, except for hawks.
The farmer was out back shooting at something last week. I have no idea what but I’m thinking maybe rabbits.

At a gathering yesterday, someone was surprised that our previous move required 3 20" trucks. A. That’s not a lot for grownups with furniture; B. We packed things we would have had to give away and then replace on arrival, like TP, detergent, canned food, potting soil… We did get rid of most of the furniture and at least 1/3 of my books, plus a lot of clothing, but my lovely wife adores her specialty cookware and, y’know, I still had 2/3 of the books.

We want to re-do all of the window treatments because they’re in crummy shape, and that’s become quite expensive, so we might not be able to do the backyard project we wanted to take on this summer. That means I needed a new lawn mower. I asked a neighbor if she liked her brand of reel push mower. She said it was fine, it had been given to her years ago, she 's only used it once, and she has someone who mows for her–did I want it? Hell, yes! She wouldn’t let me buy it, so we’re going to help her with some of her backyard landscaping as a thank you. Nice!

I’ll have to try that if he doesn’t go for the moist stuff I ordered. Right now, he’s eating peanut butter covered kibble (the lengths for this little a-hole, oy!) one piece at a time.

lily, back in my youth, when I rented a very small house on a half lot, I picked up a reel mower at an auction. After my granddad sharpened the blades for me, it was a good fit. It got closer to things that a standard push mower and all that I had to do to keep it running was hose it off after cutting the grass.

I was yanking some weeds yesterday, including poison ivy. I wore gloves but I must have brushed up against some poison because there one very itchy spot on my left forearm. Mostly just annoying. In the future, I’ll pull some old socks over both forearms. Stoopit poison.

I miss being able to see my friends on facebook. I wonder if I tried to make a new one. Would I have to use a new e address?

I learned that I was allergic to penicillin at age 63. I’ve always taken the full course of antibiotics and never asked for them when it was clear that I had a virus, but it happened.

Thank you for your kind words about our old home. I hope someone who agrees with you sees it soon and buys it from us.

I went back and looked at the pics and figured out that the reason our place looks so big in the drone pics are is partly due to perspective and mostly because we had all of the roofs replaced 8 years ago so the sheds, patios and house roof all matched and made it look much bigger. OTOH, my first couple of apartments had less square footage than our big shed…

I’ve never had tummy issues after eating Taco Bell. I loves me some mystery meat once in a while. I haven’t been for a while, their Burrito Supremes shrank two times while doubling in price.

I love you very much. I really value your advice and wisdom.

I am a retired government worker, I spent almost a decade working at the Prescott VA hospital. Weed was a felony in AZ until about a decade ago.

I have never once had anyone even look sideways at me because I know how to be discrete.

The only time I stopped using weed on a daily basis was when I was in Asia. The penalties there were super strict and I heard very not good things about their jails. Happily opium based liquors or absinthe were easily available, but they weren’t weed, so I was so happy to get transferred back to work on the Nukes in Tucson and be able to smoke my beloved flower again.

We won’t be able to get the windows done until our old place sells. New windows are fairly pricey as well, but most of our current ones are probably the ones that were put in when the house was built 80 years ago so new ones will be much more energy efficient.

We are also going to need sound suppressing blinds on the back side of the house, I’ve only heard one night train but it was empty and really loud.

It will quiet down a lot here when we have our stuff, but things will still need to be bought.

Congrats on the free mower. Free is always good, as long as it works. Our place came with a riding mower that kinda worked but not really. A new one has been purchased (riding mowers around is the state past time) but we still have to deal with the old one.

Hubs just told me that he put all of the furniture hardware in one box (why?) and thinks he might have thrown the box of random shit away.

I think that if I don’t have a bed by the 4th, I can shoot him while the fireworks are going off and nobody will notice. I ain’t skeered about going to trial, sometimes even the best people screw up once too often and wemen are on juries too.

Great idea! Their online service is decent and you can pickup and return at the store. I always haunt their clearance sales at the end of each season, they mark stuff down to 75% off the clearance price, which gets good stuff pretty dang cheap, especially the teeny sized stuff. A pair of pants don’t have to be that close to perfect to be worth $4.40 when they started out at $39.99 at the beginning of the season. If you dig around on their sale and clearance on line they have some good deals too and you can take anything back to a store, don’t even have to pack it up and ship it. FWIW Costco is worthless for teeny or plus size clothes. 10-12-14-16 average length, occasionally there is a deal for every day stuff. Mil is not missing anything there and it sounds like you do real well for your everyday at the thrift stores around you.

Mostly, the heavens thank you for what you do for her. Remember, Roxy and Tobias are watching and learning about how to care for and value old people. That may come in handy for you or FCDad some day.
