The Thirteenth Amendment was ratified by Congress December 6th, 1865.
I knew I was leaving out a date.
Time to start working on a teaching plan for the Fourth of July. I like to use lots of pictures, which is fun. Pictures really are worth a thousand words. July 4th is a big deal for refugees to understand if they intend to apply for citizenship and pass the test. Then it’s a long dry spell til Labor Day. Columbus Day in October is a messy one, I’m of several minds about that one.
Off to feed the two kitties I’m cat sitting for a friend who is off volunteering at the National Debate Tournament in Des Moines. I feel bad for him. I’m a snob about Des Moines-it may be the Capitol but it’s boring and too sedate. Much better landscape, food and fun east and north in Little Bohemia in Cedar Rapids. The beer is better too.
I don’t see the kitties usually, they are very skittish. I just take note of whether the kitty toys scattered around are in different spots when I come back. This time one of then yeeted the laser pointer toy onto the floor from the table so at least one of them is alive.
Sorry for the confusion MetalMouse.
GF stood for grandfather.
Sorry your W/D got left behind JtC. I really like my washer/dryer combo.
Something to consider if you’re going to buy a new set.
I agree that Bushes are the best baked beans, CatGlove
We like Nathan’s hotdogs best.
One time the store was out so we got BallPark instead. We could hardly eat them; they were so sweet. I checked the ingredients and WTH puts sugar in hotdogs?
Gabapentin makes me horribly sleepy, Ooopsie. I take it for sciatica, it’s supposed to calm the nerve. It also makes me a bit loopy. I don’t like it, so I’m only taking it at bedtime.
I don’t know if the vet told you but don’t abruptly stop giving Bailey gabapentin. I didn’t know better and quit taking it. I was pretty sick for over a week. It’s why I didn’t want to take it again, but it does help with the pain.
Gabapentin is why I don’t respond as much as I like, and like others, I hope nobody feels slighted or that I don’t like them. I often fall asleep while typing out a response and then forget what I was going to say.
Have fun with your singing night.
Boo, I think my stomach is better now. I can’t be sure though, because I thought I was better and then I wasn’t.
I need to find somebody to get on the garage roof and take the covers off the whirly-gigs. My son got the ladder out a few weeks ago, but he was shaking so hard the ladder was rattling. I’m in no condition to be climbing a ladder, and besides, I had an old step-ladder collapse on me and I’ve been nervous about ladders ever since.
Today it dawned on me why my son is probably so scared. His father died falling off a roof and having a heart attack, or having a heart attack and then falling off the roof. Not sure which came first.
It was a pretty quiet day today. I spent way too long trying to get the rent and utilities website figured out. I think I’ve got it now. Then I went for a long walk. I’m listening to Great Expectations, which I read and loved during my Dickens phase in my early twenties. A man I was passing said something to me, so I took off my headphones and heard his life story. He’s homeless (but very clean and tidy) and was about to kill himself a year or two ago when someone gave him a dog who’d been abused. It was love at first sniff, and he feels blessed. The dog (named Peter Parker) was happy and relaxed and had a shiny coat. Just seeing how happy they were made my day.
Wheelie, thanks so much for voicing what’s been my concern, too. I tend to realize on walks that I never responded to an MMP post and resolve to do so when I get home, but then find 33 NEW posts. Remember that I Love Lucy episode where she and Ethel are working in a chocolates factory, and the bonbons are coming down the line so fast, they’re stuffing them in their mouths and shoving them in their bras? That’s how I feel. I do read and love all the posts, though.
I love this and am stealing it, if that’s OK. The free ride thing sounds great! I hope it’ll be available in many more places.
Robin Williams doing Scottish accent: Fuck, noooo! Not straight! I put shit in the way. likke trees and bushes and high grass!
My parents lived in Carlsbad after retirement. I loved it there. You probably lived farther north, though, right?
Thank you so much for saving me the trouble. And I’m impressed with your knowledge!
Tride, I used to live in Havre. When we got a lot of spring rain, it was green and gorgeous. The rest of the time, it looked like a hostile environment for humans, which is really what it was. I met some wonderful people there, though.
They’re my faves, too. I loved the hot dogs at the July 4th celebration at Mom’s gated 55+ community and asked. They were Hebrew Nationals. Sooo good!
I like geese, but only from a distance. They’re mean. If they were people, parents would hurry children past their houses, and UPS drivers would just throw parcels from the truck.
I don’t think it’s very nice to tempt us with swim porn.
I think I missed something. Why would you need to leave at 2:00? You’ve been so desperate for a job, I know there must be some really important reason, but I can’t recall what it is.
Shout-out to the lady who ordered a butterfly shrimp dinner, with a side of … popcorn shrimp. Guess she likes her seafood.
Another shout-out to the last car of the night. The passenger started fussing a bit about the cost (our prices have gone up) and the guy driving said, in a mock-angry tone but with what seemed to me to be clear affectation: “My Baby needs food, so shut the fuck up. I’m buyin’ anyway!”
I like Bush’s baked beans too. The only beans better are B & M baked beans in the brown glass bean pot jar, but they are next to impossible to find and a king’s ransom if you do, so Bush’s it is!
Here’s hoping you’re on the mend . Take it slow, keep food simple and hydrate well above all else. Rest extra too.
Thank you for this image~hours later I’m still laughing.
I’m whupped, y’all. Wanted to go directly to bed, but also really wanted a shower.
Feel so much better for it, but I gotta hit the sack. Thank the gods my S.M. fed me tonight, I am way too tired to cook or eat. Worked out, too, she had leftovers she was tired of eating, and this way, her mom got an empty Tupperware back: win-win-win.
Wishing everyone a peaceful slumber and happy dreams.
The canned version is on Amazon. Is the glass version that much better?
Up, caffeinated, and sheveled. Off to heave. Roomie is bingeing Bridgerton. Watching it I realize it’s pretty much Napoleonic Era Heathers, with a slightly lower teen angst body count
“Cresida, why are thou such a megabitch?”
“Because I can be.”
I have only ever eaten the glass jar ones (easily available the 13 years I lived in Boston, B & M has made beans in Portland Maine since time eternal). I have no reason to think the canned ones wouldn’t be as good, til you said something I didn’t know canned B & M beans existed.
According to the intertoobz, two stores in my local grocery store chain carries the B & M can, just not my home store closest to me. I’ll try to find the beans when I’m near one of those stores, the more la-di-dah upscale chi chi ones of course.
Thanks for clueing me in. With any luck one of swampy’s fart feasts to follow. I even like baked beans on toast for breakfast so boo fae too.
Morning, mumpers! It’s currently 13c/56f with a predicted high of 18c/65f and cloudy. Weather app says “I wonder who stole your fucking sunshine. Wasn’t me.” Whoever stole it has given it back now, it’s looking lovely out there.
Staying indoors with the a/c and having a day off the day drinking sounds like a wise move. Hope tummy is no longer iffy and the normal activities of a RDOS can continue!
This sounds like an exceptionally sensible idea, especially where you have an older (not you, obviously!) population who are liable to suffer even with a short walk in the heat. Since FL seems so popular with retirees, ensuring they can get around safely in all weathers must be a benefit if it lessens the potential strain on healthcare services. And of course, everyone turns up for dinner looking like they just walked out of the dressing room.
sari I hope your tummy is better too!
flyboy Juneteenth is a celebration of freedom so good food and a ride out on your bike sounds like the perfect way to celebrate it.
hippie another beautiful piece of work, I am in awe of your talents.
JtC I’m glad you got a satisfactory resolution on the washer/dryer, it does sound like a good idea to leave them where they are and add that to the cost of the property
I am sure you will have a lot of fun working on those plans! I hope they find it interesting to learn about the cultural significance of the different holidays, I think it’s great to find out why people are celebrating some things whilst other occasions are far more sombre.
Today should be relatively uneventful (fingers crossed!) - we have finished releasing all our final year results, marks and feedback so everyone’s had whatever they’re getting. So far, the mailboxes have been fairly quiet and nobody seems particularly outraged at their results. I expect next week will be different when the first and second year students get their results, they will have plenty to whinge about.
The campus peace camp saga continues. The VC (Vice Chancellor, not Viet Cong) went to court last week to get a possession order to move them off university property. For some reason, the order was granted but it only covered the area of Chancellor’s Court. Today, the handful of tents that were in that part of campus have all…err…de-camped and moved themselves to the Green Heart area (the bit outside my building). I expect that means the VC will have to go back to court for another possession order. They have also ordered anyone who’s not staff or student to take themselves off campus too.
Things at irk are calming down now that the Board of Examiners meetings are all done, and I am off to the pub tonight with friends. There may be a celebratory drink in there too.
Good Mornin’ Y’all! Up and caffeinatin’. YAWN ‘Tis 74 Amurrkin out and mostly cloudy with a predicted high of 91 and mostly N.O.S. for the day. I feel muchly better today. I shall take twuck in for an oil change this mornin’ at seven-thirty. we shall procure provisions. I will continue to take it easy today as in inside in the a/c just to make sure. Sup shall be country fried steak, rice 'n gravy, collard greens, baked sweet N.O.T. and cornbread. My appetite has most definitely returned!
Pilot that subsidized ride system sounds like a great idea. I hope TPTB decide it’s worth keepin’. Hooray for planned staycation with BB. Also, Kosher-Adjacent Bacon would be a great band name!
Nellie hooray for much improved eyesight!
JtC weild the cane o’ doom and fuss at the movers. I bet the movers will get that washer and dryer then.
MOOOOOOM yay for FCD and MIL safely arrivin’ back at FairyChatEstates!
Hippie great work! That quilt shall be tres cool.
Oopsie I have never had TiVo. I am either a Luddite or just a grumpy old man who can’t figure out all them new fangled inventions. I know you will have tons o’ fun with the new Lego sets.
MG when one needs cookies, well, one NEEDS cookies.
doggio I think you should get that cat Lego set. Spot could spend hours yeetin’ lego pieces all over the apartment for you to step on in the dark.
Now I need more caffeine and to feed rumbly tummy. Then I suppose I must needs purtify and don attire acceptable for bein’ amongst the great unwashed. Woe and bother!
MusicMan has, uh, detritus all over the floor in there. So much so that it would be dangerous for me to get into the Music Room. And, there’s certainly no way I was going to ask for more information and lead to him being more upset.
Back when I needed a new washer, the quickest, least stoopitly expensive option was red, and that’s what I got. (I cant recall, but I think it was in plague times.) Not that color matters - it’s in the basement in its own little room. The dryer is still white. Makes me no never-mind - both work.
The stoopit deer that keep coming in our yard have eaten just about all the buds off my hostas. Dammit!
This is our plan for July 4th. At least for my daughter, the grands, and me. SIL has to work and FCD is absolutely not interested, so he’ll stay home with his mom. We took Roxy when she was 2-ish and she had a blast. I’m sure Tobias will love it, too.
I see my neurologist today - really all I want to discuss is the meds - I’m still feeling a tad hungover in the morning and I’m not sure if it’s the meds or my waking at occasionally stoopit hours. I did pretty much sleep thru last night, which was great.
FCD goes to the dermatologist this afternoon for his (probable) MRSA. Our family doc can’t deal with it any longer and told him to seek a specialist, so today’s the day. And MIL’s aide comes today for her shower - I need to remember to leave the front door unlocked in case she comes while we’re at my appointment. Lots going on for their first day back.
I’ve noticed that my new phone is constantly giving me notifications that I don’t care about, and slowly but surely, I’m turning them off. I did get it linked to my car yesterday, and I need to link it to FCD’s car. I won’t pick up the phone when driving, but the hands-free option is, to me, no different from talking to the person sitting next to me. Not that I get calls all that much.
FCD is still abed and I won’t shower till he’s awake. We need to leave here around 10 - no big rush to get up early. I do need to think about supper - probably something with chicken. And so my day begins.
Thank you all for the kind words. Tomorrow in the start of the Quilter’s Guild annual show We need to be there at 0700 for set up and to help vendors unload and set up. The show opens at 1600 so there is a lot of work needed to get ready.
I will have a quilt, my first completed work, on display and in line for judging. I do not think that it will win a ribbon but I am really interested in the judge’s feedback to help me up my game.
Turns out, you just walk through and pick out what you want from a bunch of boxes lined up. They had everything from bok choy to strawberries to popcorn. Tried the popcorn last night: it was pretty bad and I threw the whole bag of kernels out.
Showered, dressed, and waiting till it’s time to go to the doc. MIL got up, hit the bathroom, then went back to bed. FCD went to get his morning fountain drink and I think he went to the boat, too.
Good morning all. Up early again and starting through the pre-vacation checklist. Laundry is working and will get some housework done later this morning so things are more or less organized when I leave tomorrow. Might get some swimming in but that depends if all the other stuff goes as planned. About 5 hours to drive to Mobile so just depends if I want to get there early and do stuff or get there later in the day and laze.
74F heading to 89F today. (Just added a note to adjust my AC to 81F; no use keeping an empty house any cooler than necessary).
BBBoo and others, thanks for the history lesson (which I knew, but still was interesting to read). Happy June Nineteenth!
Oopsie, good wishes on whatever TV stuff you get, I probably don’t watch enough of my Direct TV to get my money’s worth, so adding more stuff just isn’t in the plan. But what works best for you is your gold standard, so go for it. And enjoy the Legos.
Hope Nelson is doing better, red.
Cat Glove, nice that the auditors couldn’t find any problems. Enjoy the swimming come Olympics time.
rocky, thanks for the clarfication; I hear so many different things here in the MMP that I just assumed this was some sort of bread I hadn’t heard of.
JtC, sounds like you made a friend already; and I think the compromise on the washer/dryer is good. Strange how often we walk by things and not realize what we’re looking at.
It’s the best type of bus.
Pardon me, butyour flooziness is showing …and you should see what some of the ladies wear at the gym, I swear those bottoms could have been painted on, they are so tight…
But it’s a Dry Heat!!
FCM, sounds like a fun 4th of July, glad FCD is home and bet he’s not doing much today.
Flyboy, sorry to hear about the family woes, at least the money is there, but sounds like sister is not the greatest planner in the world.
Coppertone, best of luck in whatever job you take.
nellie, sorry the guy is homeless, but that he takes good care of his dog is a positive in my book; I wish them both well. And I think I beat you to the Robin Williams reference (damn I miss him).
Sweet dreams, shoe
Not a baked bean (or most any other type of bean except green) fan, so no comments on that.
boo fae, sounds like legal bureaucracy can be just as picky as it is here.
Hippie, fingers crossed that you win a ribbon.
Sounds like the first laundry load is about done and I’m going to wash dishes by hand (not enough to justify running the dishwasher), so all y’all enjoy Hump Day.
Read much, retained a bit, enough to know that nellie can see! Congratulations, ma’am!
Misnomer, congratulations to you on your gig…and your date.
I’ve finally managed to get my corporate overlord software to work, which is dandy because our old software will be phased out next week. The air conditioner was out at our behemoth headquarters, but only on our wing on our floor, so my hand was kind of forced since we were told to just work from home. Since it was over 100F and super sticky, it was around 85-90F in the building, and I sit near a window. I could feel it on my back anytime the sun went behind a cloud.
Workplace politics are still weird. I feel a corporate tsunami coming, but I don’t know when and I don’t know what it’ll look like. Suffice to say that people are cagey, I think my boss has gotten some really negative feedback (she’s a wonderful, kind person but also stretched so thin she’s not the greatest boss right now, but people are human) and she’s kind of in panic mode and potentially worried about her job. I’m not sure if I should be, too, or not. That said, I’m now giving my boss’s updates to her boss, which is really awkward.
Oh, well - all I can do is pull up a chair and get the popcorn, watch the show and hope I’m not in it.
Glad it’s summer, though - I get my nights at the pool, chatting with friends while overlygirl and her friends swim and we listen to the frogs. I miss my son being that age. I’m so glad he likes us enough to spend time with us, even if the pool is no longer his thing.
It’s 61F and sunny outside. We are promised abundant sunshine throughout the day and a high temperature of around 80F.
Since I’m off today for Juneteenth, I think I’ll dink around in the yard. I need to mow the lawn since I could not do it over the weekend. I also need to do some laundry since I didn’t do it over the weekend. I usually do laundry on Sunday, but my son was here, so he, my husband, and I were all hanging out together.
Nellie, yay for being able to see. I’ve needed my glasses to read the computer for the last five years or so. Before then, I could read the computer without glasses. I wish I didn’t have to wear them all the time, but it’s a small thing compared to what you’ve endured, so I’ll just be grateful that’s all I need to do to be able to see.
I am honestly not looking forward to the 4th of July. This will be the pups’ first, and I’m not sure how they’ll do. Also, the dumbasses next to me will probably have another huge party and leave a massive mess in the cul-de-sac, plus I’ll have firework debris all over my yard and driveway. My husband will lose his everlovin’ mind, and I’ll be miserable because I’ll be trying to calm his ass down.
I wish we could go somewhere else, but Maisie still refuses to potty on a leash, so I’m sort of stuck.
Hippie, that’s a beautiful quilt!
Yay for upstairs AC, VanGo. At least now you’ll be cool, so the initial sweat is worth it.
JtC, I’m glad a good solution was found for reimbursement on the W/D, but I’m sorry you have to wait for so long. That’s just so stupid, and I have much the same feelings as you regarding why.
FCM, I’m glad your sweetie is home. Maybe Alexa should be removed while MiL is there to cut down on the annoyance factor? I don’t know what else you have hooked up to Alexa, though. But MiL would probably fixate on something else instead. I’m just throwing this out, but maybe her fixation on time has something to do with the fact that, deep down, she knows there isn’t much of it left. Once she hears the time, it’s like, “Hah! I made it another two hours!” I dunno. Maybe that’s crazy talk, but it makes sense to me.
Alright, I’ve goofed off long enough. I had the luxury of sleeping until 5:45, so I’m behind on my usual morning chores.
Hot again today. Visited the dispensary yesterday and got micro dose tablets. Aig is hard boiling for 7 layer sallit which will be my dinner.
Ursala Kitteh is feeling much better but left a small puddle in the dining room yesterday. I panicked, called the vet who said she would need an oral abx if the UTI symptoms come back. She’s eat and drinking and using her box except for that accident. Looking out her window, moving around. Bright eyed. I don’t want to hafta give her oral meds.
