Old People, Get Off the Road!

[ul]
[li]Individual cars moving slower than the speed limit (when driving at the limit would be safe), especially in the left lane, are a major inconvenience and a potential safety hazard.[/li][li]When the rest of traffic is moving significantly faster than the speed limit, and keeping up with traffic would be safe, individual cars moving at the speed limit create a similar inconvenience or hazard.[/li][li]A disproportionate number of these slow cars are driven by older people.[/li][/ul]
Which of those is wrong?

Of course, driving faster than the rest of traffic is also unsafe, and younger drivers are probably more likely to do that. But I don’t see the OP advocating it.

mangeorge:

Since the idea behind retesting is that older drivers may have lost the physical ability to drive safely, what’s the point of retesting young drivers? If a kid passes his driving test at 16, I don’t see why he’d be a worse driver at 18 or 20.

What about the quote below? Sounds like Chubbs is not only advocating going above the speed limit, but feels that those who don’t, should.

Here’s a NHTSA report for 1999, if you’re interested;
http://www.nhtsa.dot.gov/people/ncsa/factshet.html
It’s a five page pdf file, and compare’s accident rates by age and other factors.
There are a lot of other reports, and they all say pretty much the same thing.
Doesn’t look good for the younger crowd.
While older impaired drivers do cause accidents, I don’t think safety is the OP’s concern. Annoyance maybe? Sure, that’s it. I also get annoyed at slower drivers. But let’s be honest here. How often do you actually come across a car doing 40 in a 65 zone? In the fast lane?
Slow down, kids! Especially when there’s other traffic around you. So maybe someday you yourself will be one of those frustrating older people.
Peace,
mangeorge

Two days ago! And on the weekend.
Can’t take the heat, eh, little buddy?
Or maybe your grampa caught you playing with his computer.
Get pulled over for setting your own speed limit?
Bang up mommy’s car?
Wanna drag?
Oh come on, man… Losing an arguement ain’t that bad. Happens to me all the time. Just not this time.
Peace,

If you are still reading this, one final note:

In three unrelated accidents in the past two weeks in this area, seven teenagers died. All of these accidents had in common high speed, no alcohol, and teenage drivers.

A sad month here indeed.

Chubb’s last post is now June 8, (less than 24 hours ago.) Oh, he’s still active on this board, all right. But I think he has developed a case of selective amnesia when it comes to this thread!

Yeah, you nailed it, mangeorge. He can’t take the heat! Come on Chubb - we know you’re there. And personally, I don’t buy for a minute that you are not reading this thread. Come on. Show a little intestinal fortitude.

One point I’d like to have clarified; was the OP talking about driving on the freeways or on street levels? If it’s on street level, a very good reason for keeping to the speed limit; traffic lights! Most of them are timed so that by staying near the speed limit, you do can keep driving rather than constantly stopping and starting.

Chubbs isn’t likely to answer your question, he’s avoiding this thread like the plague. But I’d take this

to mean mostly street level.
Take a nap, indeed.
Peace,
mangeorge

Insurance is based on statistical analysis and old people pay less for insurance - go figure !

Emergency vehicles in a 65 or greater zone can legally do 80
