Old skin - smilies not working

I never use them so I didn’t notice until now, I’ve been under the old skin ever since it was possible to go back to it. When I click on a smiley, nothing happens. I got this one because I could remember the keystrokes for it.

Using old skin, Opera, Windows 7.

They are working for me.

If you have a script blocker, you’ll probably want to set it to allow scripts from straightdope.com (if you are trying to block ads, the ad scripts don’t come from the SDMB site). If your script blocker blocks straightdope.com your smilies using the smiley buttons won’t work, and a few other features, like popup notification of private messages, won’t work either.

I use adblocker plus, does that include a script blocker? Otherwise, I’m not using one.

Using Windows 8.1 and IE 11.

I don’t use IE so I’m a bit fuzzy on what exactly its available settings and capabilities are, but if I remember correctly there are some script blocking options in it. Check under your settings.

Testing, testing, Old site skin, Windows 10, Firefox ESR 52.7.3, uBlock Origin but no other relevant addons:

Looks OK to me.

I guess that was it. The setting was under Internet Settings/Advanced, and it was called Disable Script Debugging (Internet Explorer). This item was checked, I removed the check, and now the smilies are working.

Thank you.

Anyone know if I should expect to see any other side effects of this change?

I’ve seen the side effects, I keep getting popups that ask me if I want to debug a script on whatever web page I’m on, that is not working properly. I think the cure is worse than the disease, considering how seldom I use smilies, so I am going to put my debut script setting back where it was.

Thanks for the troubleshooting and solution, even though I didn’t like it.

That’s “debug” script, of course. And there’s a missing comma, but I can’t be bothered.

There’s probably another setting that will allow scripts but won’t activate debug mode when a script fails. Unfortunately I don’t have IE11 running anywhere to poke around and figure out exactly where it is. It might be under security zones or something like that.

OK, there is another setting “Disable Script Debugging (Other)”, which also allows smilies, so I’m trying that. Those two are the only ones I can find that mention the word “script.”

It’s not ABP (don’t leave your homepage without it)

There’s a popup if you get an IM? I’ve only ever seen the bold notification at the top right of the page.

You have to turn it on.

Go to your User Control Panel (UserCP, upper left part of the page), click on Edit Options about mid-way down on the left, then under Messaging & Notification, check the box next to Show New Private Message Notification Pop-up.
