The title pretty much sums it up. If I click on one of the smilies in that little box, it no longer shows up in the dialog box where I write my post. It worked earlier today. The only change was downloading the adblock extension from Firefox. I assume this must be the culprit? Is there a way to let it let me use the smilies while still blocking the google ads?
I don’t have an answer, but I have the same problem. And it started for me a few weeks ago. Just out of the blue. At least I don’t remember doing anything special.

Yeah, but you’re using that Canadian version of Firefox.
Not only am I having the smiley problem, but it won’t let me use the text options in my posts (italics, bold etc.) When I click on them, the page reloads but my post remains unchanged.
I’m running firefox, with adblock, but that’s how I’ve always used SDMB and it was never a problem until now.
Is it any better now? Changed your settings to “Straight Dope v3 Gamma” instead of “default.” That’s been a little wrinkle of late.

(Unfortunately, this is not hard to do. )
When did this first happen? Maybe I can backtrack and look at some of the other settings and figure out how this might have affected you.

Seems to work for me. Firefox v1.0.6, w/ adblock.
Not only am I experiencing the same thing (none of the “auto formatting” buttons work anymore), I also don’t have to “activate” the quick reply window by clicking one of the little icons in a reply anymore, I can just start typing right in the box. Can’t say for sure there’s a correlation, but I also noticed the change as soon as I insalled the adblock add-on in Firefox. All the buttons and bells still work as usual when browsing the boards with IE.
