Can't get smilies in my post by clicking on them

Not only am I experiencing the same thing (none of the “auto formatting” buttons work anymore), I also don’t have to “activate” the quick reply window by clicking one of the little icons in a reply anymore, I can just start typing right in the box. Can’t say for sure there’s a correlation, but I also noticed the change as soon as I insalled the adblock add-on in Firefox. All the buttons and bells still work as usual when browsing the boards with IE.

I just wanted to chime in with “me too!” on all the problems listed here, and elsewhere in the thread. Started about a week ago or less, I reckon.

OK - for me, it’s the AdBlock. I just upgraded my Firefox to 1.0.7, which disabled Adblock, and the board features worked fine. When I re-installed the Adblock, the aforementioned problems returned.

Hmmm… Adblock? vBulletin features? Adblock? vBulletin?

I have win XP, with Firefox 1.0.6, with adblock. I unclicked the “enable adblock” button in the preferences and… , yup, smiles work now.

So we know the source of the problem, but why now?

(I’m torn between my love of clickable smilies, and hatred of google ads.)

OK, I upgraded to 1.0.7.

They work without adblock on, and now with adblock on:

So, to all those having problems: upgrade to 1.0.7, and all will be well.

(The formatting toolbar workds too.)

OK, nope, my mistake, still not working. I forgot that if I turn on adblock without reloading the page it doesn’t take effect yet.

Very interesting… What happens if you check the “Quote message in reply” checkbox… Does it quote the OP, or the last post, or something random, or nothing at all?

Upgraded to FF 1.0.7, removed straightdope from my adblock list and now

You had straightdope in your adblock list?! That’s probably it; I have FF 1.0.7 with Adblock running, and pagead2.googlesyndication.com/pagead/* in my Adblock list (among many others), and the smilies :rolleyes: and format menus work fine.

Very interesting… What happens if you check the “Quote message in reply” checkbox… Does it quote the OP, or the last post, or something random, or nothing at all?

If I type directly into the quick reply box and check “Quote message in reply,” it inserts the quote tags with nothing between them. If I click one of the quick reply buttons from within a post, rather than “activate” the quick reply box, it responds exactly like clicking the standard Reply button, sending me directly into “advanced” mode.

You don’t want the boards on your block list (at least, not for Adblock in Firefox; I don’t know about any others). You want the source of the ads themselves, i.e. the aforementioned pagead2.googlesyndication.com/pagead/* with an http:// in front (in case it did something goofy, I didn’t want to type a proper link to the site).

That fixed it for me.

Tools->Adblock->Preferences

Find http://boards.straightdope.com and right click & delete.

See, I tried that one the first time I saw it suggested in another thread and it made it impossible to navigate the board.

I had no reply buttons, and I could see the menus such as thread tools, etc, but they were completely non-functional, I got no drop down menus when I clicked on them (which was really annoying since I like to subcribe to several threads)

Thats when I removed the above mentioned block and just blocked straight dope. Fixed the first set of problems but created others. I’ll just settle for ignoring the ads.
Oh, and just cause I can… :dubious: :o :eek:
