Old Spice

When I was a kid I liked the smell of Old Spice. Of course I was too young to be wearing cologne. I still like the smell, but there’s no way in hell I’d wear it. Generally I don’t care what people think. But smelling like someone’s great-grandfather is going too far.

But it’s still being sold. Who’s buying it? And what about Old Bay, for that matter?

My husband used to wear it but we both stopped buying it a long time ago - we just kind of stopped for no reason.

Now he smells like himself. Or AquaNet depending on whether he has just finished his ponytail.

In a statistic I just made up, I heard that as much as 93.1% of annual Old Spice sales are accounted for by kids buying gifts for grandpa.

Old people?

For me, it’s permanently-intertwined with memories of my father. I don’t think that I’ll ever buy it.

How about Old Ironsides, Old Fogey, and Old Fart?

I like Old Spice, and I wear it occassionally. Now that Bruce Campbell advertises it, I cant not wear it!

I’ll admit to having a bottle because I like the way it smells, sort of. I don’t like the fact that it has cheap ingrediants and gets that cheap perfume smell going after a while. But if it’s a cold day where I’m apt to be around a fire or chopping wood or something I might splash some on just to maximize my tough old man feeling.

I love the smell of Old Spice. Love it.

I can’t account for the sales, though, as I’ve bought one bottle in, say, twenty years.

I love it too. My Grandfather never wore it. It does smell great on my husband, who does wear it on occasion. Count me in the minority.

I like it and my wife likes it. She buys it for me; I wear it. People at work have remarked that they like it without knowing what it is. When I tell them, they wrinkle their noses and say “ohhhh” in that funny, nasal way, as if knowing made it smell differently.

I wear it every day…I had no idea I was committing such a faux pas. I’ll go slink away silently (and hopefully odorlessly).

I wear it.

I like the smell, & it’s cheap.

Good combo.

I know a man so old that when he started wearing cologne it was called New Spice.

My male roommate (21, not old) wears Old Spice and I think it smells really good – at least in the bathroom after he’s used it.

Female here - I’ve always like Old Spice on guys. Bay rum and lime is another oldie I like. But I’ve always liked old fashioned scents for men and women both. My favorite scent for all genders is still sandalwood.

There are a couple of solid reasons why people still use Old Spice. First, it smells like food, and who doesn’t like that? Second, deep in the primitive parts of the brain, a woman “knows” that a real man smells like Daddy and Grandpa smelled when she was a girl.

Before you come back to joke that old Grandpa smells like urine, remember that male urine is a male smell. Does Old Spice have a faint note of urine? I have no idea, but many men’s cologne have a hint of musk, an equally funky male smell.

I just bought my dad a bottle of Old Spice after shave for Christmas (he’s 61, fyi).

I’d probably wear it if somebody bought it for me (32, fyi). After shave and cologne are things I like to wear if I have them on hand, but I never seem to spend the money to buy them. So gifts are my only way of getting them.

Bay Rum! Not Old Bay. :smack:

On the other hand, that seems just the tiniest bit creepy…

I’m surprised so many here wear Old Spice. I can’t even remember the last time I smelled it. (Another fragrance thread reminded me of it.) I’m not much of a scent-wearer. I still have a nearly full bottle of Old Navy from four years ago, and some Claiborne for Men older than that. And somewhere, in a box, I have a little bit of my dad’s Hai Karate from the '70s.

Why? Is Old Spice making a comeback? Or is he being ironic?

To those of you who wear it: How old are you, when do you wear it, and what are the demographics of your circle of friends?

I don’t think he’s being ironic – it’s just what he wears. I know his girlfriend really likes old spice so maybe that’s why

I don’t know that it’s making a comeback, but they are advertising it more lately (with the tag line “If you grandfather hadn’t worn it you wouldn’t be here”)

I’m going to be 30 right quickly, I wear it when I want to but not every day, however I am an every day cologne guy and demographics? White aging hipsters I guess.
