Hippie, I love your story about pulling the fire alarm.
Hope all is well with nellie
Today’s the first day of school here. Feel sorry for the students and teachers - many schools do not have AC and we have a heat advisory until Thursday evening.
I don’t remember any first days of school. My dad said that I told my mom she couldn’t accompany past the corner as I didn’t need her help. That was the first day of kindergarten.
My dad says that their goal was to raise me to be independent, but they may have overshot the mark.
Good morning all! I’m trying out a speech to text program so if things look weird that’s why.
I remember being excited for school. Kindergarten through 9th grade I was in a K through 12 school, same kids for the most part from kindergarten on. I don’t remember any specific first days there. Just a lot of time in school that I was excited for and some that was just heartbreaking because small town and the prejudices that come with that. When I was in school there, school started the Wednesday after Labor Day every year. When I moved to Florida for 10th grade school started at the end of August instead. I remember being very nervous that first day because it was a new school, people I had no idea who they were, and a much larger group than I was used to. The one good thing that first year was that my chorus class was first period. That’s where most of my friends I ended up meeting. And it was an easy transition into school that way. The other days of high school the next two years I don’t really remember first day, but I do remember being excited to get my schedule every year because I loved seeing what classes I was going to share with friends, what classes I got into, and just the general layout of my day.
Like shh, my kids have been back in school for almost 2 weeks. This year their first day was a bit special, because CtE started their senior year and BtY started their freshman year at the same school. I loved seeing what classes they got into and what their year was going to look like. I think I’m one of those moms who’s more excited about my kids school days then they are.
Started off with a rough morning because I found out that I transferred $300 from my bank account to my savings account instead of the other way around. So now I’m $300 in the hole. But I was able to get it transferred back, it’ll just take a couple of days. So a stressful morning means I’m planning on doing a lot of writing today. That’s the important part is keeping a focus on my mental well-being and the fact that this is actually something that helps me.
This week looks to be a fairly laid-back, easy week. I don’t have any doctor’s appointments, any school appointments, or anything else where my time is needed. I did a very good job of getting things cleaned up over the weekend. Now I just have to keep it that way. Which, hopefully shouldn’t be too difficult.
I was going to say that I was adding my imploring to everyone else’s about nellie getting to the ER, but I saw that boo posted that she is there and she is okay. So I’m very relieved to read that.
I’m slightly frustrated with the talk to text because it goes so much slower than my typing speed, but it does seem to be helping my hands more since I’m not having to type as much. So I think I’ll be using this on my computer until I can get something figured out about my wrists. Hope everyone has a great day today, especially those who have kids starting first day of school today. If you’re in places that are hot, stay cool. If you’re in places that feel nice, I’m jealous.
Well, I was originally supposed to meet the landscaper at the nursery at 8am. While I was driving there, Mrs W called to tell me he texted her and changed it to 9. No big deal; I found a nice breakfast place and hung out for a while, then headed to the nursery. I texted the landscaper to let him know I was there. He called me back and said we were meeting tomorrow at 9. D’oh. That is indeed what his text to Mrs W said. She misread it.
His reason was the weather. We were in fact supposed to get the remnants of Hurricane Hilary through here this morning, but she’s pretty much steered herself to the west. There was a bit of rain overnight, but it’s quite sunny and pleasant right now. Oh well, I’ve got a couple more errands to finish up today, and I’ll just take another drive tomorrow morning.
So you’re Bob Fosse??? At a Performing Arts school?
Oh thank goodness. Thanks very much BBBoo for finding out and letting us know!
I know Butters lives/lived in Florida.
Woke up sometime after 4am and checked news on mini Ipad for sev hrs. Decided to wear black pedal pushers but needed to reinforce a couple seams that had come undone for about 1/2" to an 1". Took me as long to thread the needle as it did to sew the seams. When did they start making needle holes so small; almost microscopic to these old eyes.
I don’t remember my first day of school, but Mom often shares the story of me NOT letting her walk me to school like all the other kids because I was grown up!!!
I’m so glad to hear that Nellie is being looked at. Even without the surgery, swelling like she reported is nothing to ignore.
No rain yesterday but lots of clouds and wind. It is drizzling now and the ground is wet but the low spot isn’t puddling yet. I’m probably going to end up using the hose to flood that area so I can find just the right spot for a tree.
I couldn’t stand it anymore this morning, and ran to Wally World for fly strips, plus a buncha other shit. Let my handyman neighbor know, but now I’ve delayed this damn shelf project (he said he’d be over later) in addition to delaying my nap.
Worse? There’s maybe a dozen flies left that I can find now that I’m back home, all scattered around. (I haven’t hung the friggin’ strips yet!) They’re either hiding, dying in hidden corners, or else I don’t need to feed Monkey for a while. Can’t think which is the worst option.
Goddammit, I finally get to the store to buy a remedy, and they’re gone. I shoulda remembered, sometimes if you ignore a problem for long enough, it solves itself.
Neighbor handyman was finishing up the massive yardwork cleanup next door by burning all sorts of greenery. (Controlled, in a firepit, very safe - and everyone does it around here, so I assume burning leaves is legal here.) Anyway, I made my presence known to him over the fence earlier by half-joking, “Good morning! Smogging out the entire 'hood, huh?”
… occurred to me later that the smoke (including the smoky smell inside my house not produced by me) may have cleared out the flies.
On the way home from Wal-Mart, I saw TWO TREES in my hood juuuuust starting to change colors. Damn near drove off the road staring joyfully.
When I started Grade 1, I had already had a brief experience of preschool (only a few months when my mother went back to work), followed by junior and senior kindergarten. In Grade 1, I was supposed to have a Ms. O. for my teacher. As I recall, I stood outside with the other kids waiting to be taken to her class, but nobody came for me. I asked another teacher where Ms. O. was, and she said: “Oh, you’re now in Ms. T.'s class!” (Ms. O. had left the school last-minute apparently).
So I waited for my new teacher. She finally came to class, possibly a bit late, and looked a little confused to be there! She introduced herself and said: “OK, now we’re going to draw a picture of the teacher!” So I did, and then we went home early, as was the custom on the first day of classes where I was.
This teacher did not radiate authority, and I quickly got testy with her.
I’m so glad you’re trying this (you do it very well, BTW) because it means all of us get more of you again~missed you when you had to back off! It’s my treasured Mumper friends and family that people my world.
This is boo’s happy dance that you’re back in your full glory !
I can’t remember either but she had a doggy named Buddy. I loved her Buddy stories. As my feeble brain remembers she lived in the Keys, or very close. ‘Pine’ was in her town’s name I think.
Handyman neighbor is in my bathroom, assembling away. Monkey even emerged from the basement to cautiously investigate.
I gave him some Squeezy-Crack as a reward for his daring bravery.
It appears the shelves will juuuuust exactly fit the space, although flushing might be tricky since the flush button is on top of the tank, not the side like an old-skool lever. If I can get Imgur to cooperate (and if it comes out looking like I hope) I’ll post a pic.
I showed him (the handyman, not the cat) the loose toilet seat/lid, and he was basically like, “Oh, yeah, that’s easy.”
Good, cuz I got cash to throw at you. Me, “fixing” it, would take hours of frustration away from my precious non-work non-sleep free time, and I’d probably still botch the job.
ETA: he just left, twenty bucks richer. Me? I have bathroom shelves and a toilet lid that won’t hit me in the back/face anymore. I’d say it was a bargain.
Plus I got his phone number so I can get a hold of him once my

(Was shooting for a strikethrough … failed.)
What the what the WHAAAATT?!?
Here I am recommending grandma’s outdated “technology” when a much better solution has been made available.
Good memory. It was @Buttercup_Smith who went by butters here in the MMP. As @Kitten_Mitten reminded us all a few posts up. butters worked for the US Navy in Key West and lived on one of the other nearby keys, maybe Big Pine Key.
Her most recent post anywhere on the SDMB was this one ~4 months ago:
One hopes she’s OK. She was a good person & fun to yak with.
I’m so sorry it’s taken me this long to get back to all of you. I’m feeling more blessed than I deserve to have such caring friends. I’m OK–no blood clot, no infection. They’re not sure why the leg blew up like it did–they kept exclaiming exclaimed over how swollen it is from hip to toes–but they think it has to do with my auto-immune issues. They called my surgeon, and he wants to see me Thursday.
Here’s why this took so long. I took an oxy before posting, and the next thing I knew, I was waking up at 4 a.m. I re-read the instruction packet, and at one point, it said to go to the ER if there was pain OR swelling in the thighs. In another place, it said call the doctor if you had pain AND swelling, and it wasn’t hurting more than usual. Maybe I should just stay home. Then I read dear shoe’s reply, decided to quit dilly-dallying, and waylaid my sister when she got up to pee. I can’t get an Uber from my apartment; it insists I’m in the woods if I try, and it took us a full 30 minutes to get me to the gate, as I’m glacially slow.
The ER was busy, and the labs, x-rays, and ultrasound took hours. They had trouble with the ultrasound due to the massive swelling. But we finally got out of there and Ubered to the pharmacy. I feel bad for worrying all of you and my sister.
I’ll post again in a bit. Right now I need to get this out. Blessings upon each of you for caring about me.
Afternoon all. Two more S’s in the book (swimming and sauna) and despite my slothful ways this weekend I still weighed in at less than 250lbs. (well, 249.8 to be precise…). Need to get ready for soccer in about an hour or so, that should get me to about 7pm and Dinner is at Culver’s tonight (mmmm, Butterburger…).
nellie, it might have been nothing, but all your friends here are happy you went to the ER and even happier that you are back. Y’all take care now.
Hope Butters is doing well, IIRC she had moved out of the keys and further North in Florida to be nearer family, so maybe that is keeping her busy these days.
shoe, you got a heck of a deal there. Keep that handyman handy. And hope the fly problem is easing.
Real Fish, that was easy to read and if you had any errors they weren’t readily apparent to me. If it will help your hands, then keep talking, lady.
Wheelie, Oops. Mrs W owes you a dessert at dinner sometime…
OK, need to start getting organized here so I;m not rushing at the last minute and forgetting stuff. Take care all.
