Up, caffeinated, and sheveled. Off to work. But only 33 days till Hockey Season, so I got that going for me. Talk amongst yourselves.
Once upon a time, many years ago, school didn’t start till after Labor Day, which is today. The first day of school was always a big deal - shiny new supplies, new, unscuffed shoes, and the hope that “this year, things will be different!!”
My most memorable first day was 9th grade, my first year in the public school system after 8 years with the nuns. It was also the first time I’d ride a bus to school. It was the day after Labor Day in 1968. I showed up at my bus stop in a pink dress, carrying a pink purse, wearing my pink Carnaby Street-style hat (kinda like this, bit the brim was smaller.) I thought I was the picture of high style, but it retrospect, I was definitely a geeky standout.
Still, there’s something about back-to-school that stirs a lot of memories - new, unchewed pencils, un-scribbled-upon notebooks and book covers, clean sneakers for gym class, new teachers, and a fresh start in September. But the memories fade quickly when I get stuck behind school buses on my way to and from work… that’s another story entirely.
Happy Moanday! Happy Labor Day (US)!! Happy Back to School - and get off my lawn!!!
First! And I had the first MMP this morning, too.
You just snuck in there while I was composing this masterpiece! I did ask for a merge.
First!
I can’t wait for breakfast, which is what my topic would have been…more later.
**Blurf **. Looks like this one shall be the actual MMP so Good Morning. I almost started one around 2 am but had no topic. Blurf
No topic here either. Grocery shopping done yesterday, so will forage for food shortly. Lawn mowing is on the docket since with last week’s dregs from Harvey the yard is looking a bit…unkempt.
Also have no phone service due to idiots at local company–trying to switch to AT&T, but we’ll see if my last e-mail draws a response today (it was a good one).
Well, pooh to all of you! My MMP had a topic and everything. You don’t deserve that!
Can’t believe I’ve been up 3 hours already…
I remember that back to school feeling very well. A department store in the town where I lived, Macon, Jawja used to sell dresses 7 for $21.00 every year. I wore dresses only. Probably through 7th grade. And the supplies. There is nothing like the smell of a new box of crayons. Even now I lurves me the smell of crayons.
Good Mornin’ Y’all! Up and caffeinatin’. YAWN 'Tis 71 Amurrkin out and cloudy with a predicted high of 90 and possible rain this afternoon. Or not. TWPTB are willy-nilly today. OYKW is off irk today and still asleep. We shall go out for N.O.L. No other plans beyond that except I do need to clean the smoker. I have been remiss!
Skool always started the week before Labor Day when I was growin’ up. Ya know, I did well in skool (even learnt to spel!) but never really liked goin’ to skool except it was the place everyone else was so it was a good hangout place. We would go downtown to McClellan’s and Kress to buy supplies. That was always kind of fun because both places also had candy counters. New clothes and shoes always came from J.C. Penney. Skool was also always out around the first of June. Now they start the last week in July but take several breaks durin’ the year and skool is over the Firday before Memorial Day.
Now I need more caffeine and rumbly tummy demands sustenance. Then I suppose I should tackle the smoker before purtification.
Happy Moanday and Labor Day Y’all!
swampy - I’ve neglected my smoker also. GMTA!
Well, it’s about time to roust **FCD **from bed and get the day started. I guess. rah.
Down my way school always started in mid to late August and, for me at least, came with heavy sense of dread.
I have today off, but this means I have work this coming Friday.
Happy Moanday! It’s a good morning because I got to sleep in and don’t have to work.
Am having a fresh apple cider donut for breakfast, and I’ll be studying today. This certified coding class requires a LOT of anatomy and physiology, and I forgot what I knew in college. Been a couple of years, you know. :D:D
Once my family moved to Florida, school started the last week of August. And it was WEIRD to someone who had spent initial school years in the northeast. It was still really farking HOT and HUMID, and schools had no a/c. As a teenager, magazine “back to school” fashion wouldn’t work – you’d die of heat stroke. If we got lucky, you could wear corduroy and a sweater one day out of the year. Maybe. And then you’d die once you came inside, because Floridians all jack the heat up to tropical at the first sign of crispness in the air. Ugggggh.
I love Labor Day here in New England because I know that crisp, cool autumn weather is usually right around the corner, and I’ll get to wear my leggings, riding boots, and giant sweaters!
And I still feel the siren call of new school supplies. I don’t know why.
Up through eighth grade, we began school after Labor Day. Like Moooom, after that I went to public school. Uniforms did nothing to prepare a girl to make fashion choices once that option was on the table.
I’m off until Thursday. Lazying around today, taking Nelson in for the big nip and chip tomorrow and staying home to give him some TLC Wednesday. While he’s at the vet tomorrow, I plan to pull out the tomato plants and put mums in their place. The patio and walkway need a bit of attention as well. It will be easier without having to keep tabs on a puppy at the same time.
I remember those days when school didn’t start until after Labor Day. I never started before then. Now my daughter does and has already been back. I don’t like it, it feels surreal. Even though it’s technically still summer after Labor Day, it just has a better feel to it when school starts after it imo. Oh well, Happy Labor Day all. We were at my MIL’s yesterday and will just be hanging at home today.
I am turning yesterday’s beast stew into veggie soup today. May make some cornbread too. Other than that not much going on here today. I have a vet appt. in the morning to get Lucky Louie a pedicure. My life is so boring. Well except for a cat four hurricane forecast.
Oh, man. I just realized that traffic is going to SUCK tomorrow, since all the schools and universities within MA re-open on the same day.
Groan.
Done with my Labor Day laboring. I emptied and refilled the dishwasher, did a load of laundry all the way thru folding and putting away, pulled a metric buttload of weeds and planted another metric buttload of plants - mostly liriope, but also a few other things. And I helped **FCD **coil up our two ridiculously old and kinked garden hoses - it was a 2-person job.
Nice thing about having the laundry room in the house and not having to use a shared facility - when I finished, I stripped down and left my sweaty work clothes in the baskets downstairs before coming upstairs to shower and dress. I expect a similar move would have been frowned upon in an apartment building’s laundry room.
Now I’m showered, dressed, and waiting for my leftover sweet N.O.T. fries to heat up in the convection oven. That’ll be my lunch. I pulled a hunk of brisket out of the freezer for supper, and I want to make a cucumber salad this afternoon. But I think the heavy labor is done. I think. I hope. I need someone to do the crap I don’t like to do and leave me the few things I don’t hate doing. Very few, come to think of it.
Well I Amazon primed some disposable cat litter boxes and a playpen. If we have to leave not letting the cat get away will be a huge thing. I need to order some more flashlights. We have a generator that will run the whole house but it is not automatic. Hubs in an electrician and can hard wire it in if need be. I just can’t be without A/C. Well I guess I could but not wanting to. He is spending the day moving new A/C equipment from under my house to the new owners homes. Let them be responsible for it. The latest track takes it over Cuba a bit so hopefully the mountains will knock it down a smidge.
I need to go grocery shopping but not if we are leaving. I wish I could get some guidance from irk but that will probably come tomorrow. The Navy has their own Meterologists and will have a handle on this. It’s been twelve years since we had a real hurricane. Wilma in 2005. Just a few little TS treats in 12 yrs. people get complacent. Also, probably a lot of ppl have never experienced a hurricane here. I am one of the lucky ones. If my house is destroyed I will have a place to go on base, somewhere. Every since Katrina we are taken care off. Even civilians like me.
If a shelter in place order is given we can go shelter on base but pets must be in cages in a hanger and I will not be separated from my pets. No way, no how. Yea, I know I love my pets too much.
In the event a bridge is torn up there is no returning home so the need to stay home is strong. But an order is an order. Dammit, y’all please tell me what to do. please?’
Went to the barn to put Miss A in pasture. I’m home relaxing and watching tennis. Looks like rain. Neighborhood is very quiet.
