(Old) The first day of school in the MMP

Now that’s adorable. From the adult POV. I can see little you being utterly crushed by the news; I know I’d have been.

My Other Shoe would still be around, back then.

If I knew then …

We coulda partied together.

Vote count is tomorrow.

It’s never too late. Betcha my plain vanilla aging Civic would carry me to your locale. I could dip my toes in the lake while tasting my way through the pizza menu😀 and partying to. music only we hear. Ice cream would need to be involved at some point.

Late to the party because I couldn’t bring myself to crawl outta bed in time to post this morning. Happy Moanday evening.

First day of school was scary, scary, scary for me. I was an anxious introvert who had not been to kindergarten and the school decided to put me in first grade anyway, despite my not knowing how to tell time or spell my name. It didn’t help that we were moving school districts so A) my older brother and guiding light could be no help, and b) our house wasn’t ready yet so we were living at the family cabin temporarily and Dad had to drive us an hour so he could get to work and get us to school. It was a crazy time and my first report card reflected that.

By the time I hit high school, the first day was just like any other school day. What summer vacation? Time to learn how to make donuts. Mind you, I loved the learning.

Nellie, I’m glad you went to the ER even if doing so is a pain. You just never know.

RealFish, my boss uses talk to text. I’m not sure why. It takes several drafts for her and I get to listen to the repetition. But your post looks fine.

Shoe, I tacoed today as well. Whatever will I eat on Taco Tuesday? And for what it’s worth, the meal I had is officially called Linner because it landed between Lunch and Dinner. This meal name was made up by a family friend at age seven, when he was told what Brunch was.

This is the most important part, please don’t apologize. We worry because we love you. You are well worth caring about and most loveable.

Now, get better!!!

Yeah, what she said!!!

YES!!! I remember them, I was born with the hat gene and loved my beanie.

The threaders you suggested do have their place but tend to work better for folks with decent eyes. I have a whole bunch of these
https://www.amazon.com/Jofefe-Stainless-Threader-Embroidery-Needle-Threading/dp/B088WR36R7/ref=sr_1_22?crid=16DWQX2IP3Q6J&keywords=needle+threader&qid=1692675438&s=arts-crafts&sprefix=needle+threader%2Carts-crafts%2C172&sr=1-22

if anyone wants some.

Self threading needles are much improved, when they first came out the eyes were very fragile and I would crush more than I lost.

The main reason I love going to needlework cons is to learn about the tools. Most of the other folks attending are thrilled to show off their toys and will allow me to handle them while telling me the pros and cons.

You can get a copy of the check from your bank. The lawyer is responsible for all charges and fees and if there is any issue with late fees, put them into your complaint to the board as well.

We had burritos for dinner tonight, tomorrow is Tuesday and we are not heathens!

Perhaps not suitable for the MMP:

The only reason I ever considered voting for Trump was that Latino guy saying that if Trump won there would be taco trucks on every corner. I didn’t vote for him of course, but I’m still mad that he had four years to give us taco trucks and failed to deliver. No wonder he got voted out.

While we didn’t get the promised storm yesterday, we did get some water tonight. Not enough to puddle in the low spot, but at least the posies got rain instead of hose water.

We have a nice sized bathroom but only one towel holder on the wall and no linen cabinet. Due to being lazy, I bought a towel holder/rack that could hold most of our bath sheets so we wouldn’t need to drill more holes in the walls.

Today some kitty found the towel rack and pulled all of the towels off the rods and shelves, but nothing got dragged into the bedroom so I’m not sure who to blame this time. GG likes playing/mangling hanging fabric but VBC drags towels around when she’s in the mood.

Up, caffeinated, and sheveled. Off to heave.

This is why I only have one sociopathic chaos generator, to cut down on investigation time.

Morning, mumpers! It’s currently 18c/64f with a predicted high of 21c/69f, and partly cloudy. Weather app asks “Hey, sun! Where’s the fucking warmth, yo?” Seems fine to me, I don’t want it all that hot, so today’s temps are good enough. There’s some nice sunshine out there, and the biiiiiiig recycling bin is outside ready to be emptied.

nellie good to hear that you made the right decision and you’re ok!

Boo thanks for updating us all

RealFish talk-to-text seems to be working fine for you, and good news if it saves the stress on your wrists/hands.

Mooom yay for new cards, and yay for having a list!

Nothing exciting in my day yet - I logged out of work at my usual time yesterday and squeezed in a Rockfit class, feels like I haven’t done one of those for ages. Then pottered around sorting out the cats before I made dinner for the humans.

This morning I’m up, cats are tended to, I’m showered, hair’s dried and looking vaguely respectable. Breakfast has been had, and cups of tea consumed without incident. Our idiot neighbour has had a delivery of building supplies so now we have to keep an eye on what’s happening next door to see what he’s building and where. Part of our house sits on a kind of shared driveway, he does not have permission to build or attach anything to our property although that hasn’t stopped him in the past. Just means we have to drag the council’s building inspector round and then the idiot has to remove whatever he’s built. There are also two structures on his land that haven’t had any planning permission, he’s had to reduce the size of the boundary wall between us because it contravened building regs…you can see where this is going, can’t you?

Two meetings in my calendar today, both of which are going to be short ones. Then a day faffing with updating student hub pages and whatnot. Tonight promises a trip to the Gettin’ Sto’ as there’s a list of stuff that needs to be got. Not my turn to make dinner so I might get a little bit of sofa time with cats. Right now, time to get ready for the first meeting of the day.

Good Mornin’ Y’all! Up and caffeinatin’. YAWN ‘Tis 73 Amurrkin out and clear with a predicted high of 97 and N.O.S. for the day. The big item on today’s agenda is mowage, which I must do. The other item is laundry, be still my beatin’ heart! After all that high sloth and general overall uselessness will be in order. Sup shall be hamburger steaks in onion gravy, smashed N.O.T., peas ‘n butterbeans, and cornbread. The need for down home cookin’ is strong today.

Now I need more caffeine and to feed rumbly tummy. Then, onward into the day! Rah.

Happy Tuesday Y’all!

Like when you start a job and find out they expect you to be there every day for the whole day doing your job! The very idea!!!

I hated the beanie with a white-hot hate! Of course, we had to have a head covering for the times we’d go into the church. I couldn’t wait till I was old enough (I think it was 5th grade) that I could wear the little lace doily on my head instead of the beanie. No, it wasn’t called a doily, but that’s what it looked like. And if you didn’t have your beanie or your doily, Sister would bobby-pin a kleenex to your head, because apparently God didn’t want to see the top of a girl’s head…

It’s a muggy 72° already so I won’t be taking the kids to the playground today, even tho it’s not supposed to get above low 80s. No thanks. I’m thinking Roxy and I can make monkey bread again. It’s going to be a long day, tho. SIL needs to drop them off before 8 and Daughter doesn’t want them back till 4. I suppose we could go to the Marine Museum. Maybe I can take them after lunch, then go straight home with them. There’s a thought…

For now, tho, caffeination!

Happy Tuesday!

Good morning!

It’s 54F, dark, and cloudy. The expected high is 75F with a mixture of sun and clouds. I am hopeful the wildfire smoke will have abated some today. Sunday was pretty awful, and yesterday it was still pretty smoky, although there was some improvement.

nellie, I’m so glad you went to the ER, and you’re okay.

I used to like the first day of school. I attended Kindergarten in Germany but started first grade in the United States. I think both my parents took me to school the first day but walked to school thereafter. I used to cut through the woods next to a pond to get to school, although I could choose to walk along the sidewalks. It was quite a distance to walk, and in today’s world, it would never happen. In third grade, we moved off the military installation, and I started a new school after Christmas break. I still had to walk to school, although I was eight houses from the cut-off for being eligible to ride the school bus. It was asinine. However, I didn’t mind the walk to school most days because we still had lots of fields and trees around the neighborhood so that we could dawdle. I was never late, but the walk wasn’t awful. I walked to school through 9th grade. When I entered 10th grade, my school was on the other side of town, and I had to ride a city bus to get there.

I liked the smell of the new pencils, peechees, binders, and crayons and generally looked forward to the first day of school. I was a decent scholar too, so I enjoyed learning.

Yesterday was an in-office day, and it was filled with the usual frustrations. I talked to my direct supervisor about how I don’t appreciate having to jump through my ass to finish a project when I gave them all the necessary information, forms, and guidance in July so they could be finished by the time I returned from vacation. I’m STILL waiting for them and being asked if the day before the due date is good enough. I very firmly told the boss NO. I have other priorities; they’ve had plenty of time, and doing this to me is ridiculous. They’ve had a month to figure out award amounts and the justifications, fill out the forms and the justification matrix, and return them to me. NONE OF THEM ARE DONE!!! He tried to be humorous and pointed out that I was so good at it, but I told him they’d had plenty of time and that I needed to be concentrating on other things. Now we’re going to discuss it at Wednesday’s leadership meeting. :face_with_raised_eyebrow: Get it done for Og’s sake and quit with the freakin’ discussions.

They also went over the award allotment amount (some stupid and, in my opinion, unjustifiable award amounts), and I’ve been asked to take the shortfall from our general support budget. We can do this (per guidance received), BUT it would be much less uncomfortable if they hadn’t spent over ten grand in my absence. I was pretty furious about that. So, I discussed it with the SD, and we’ve agreed that purchasing at least one of our SMART and the stuff needed to run it will not happen.

That’s just ONE of the many issues I dealt with yesterday. I left the office, got home, and logged on for another two hours, so it was a very long day for me.

I’m already looking forward to my next vacation, and it hasn’t even been two weeks since my return.

My SD and Deputy have gone rogue, and I feel a little like Wile E. Coyote looks after a TNT blast. I’m constantly reigning them in, and it’s exhausting, especially when I continue to clean up after the MPA.

I used to love working here, and I still love the mission of my organization, but I’m burned out. The vacation didn’t help. Damn it.

Ah well; I have a job and a paycheck, right? Sanity? Not so much.

wordy, sending hugs again.

Okey-dokey. Need to finish coffee and gird my loins, shield up, whatever for the day ahead.

I was up a bit before sunrise and balconatin’ & caffinatin’ since. Not quite noisy enough to go inside yet, but getting there. Her Ladyship has a couple of activities out of the house today so I’ll be alone to do whatever strikes. She’s got a fasting blood draw set for the earliest time she can comfortably get up and get there: 11am! I’d be there when they opened at 7, having been up for 2 hours already and starving.

Taters: Good job pushing back on these jerks wrecking your mellow and your work life. Is there a way for you to maneuver onto their team, rather than fighting their team? Just Don’t Care. Just Don’t Sign Anything. etc? It might not fit your personality, but the real stress they’re forcing you to feel doesn’t fit your personality either.

Morning all. Up early and got the two big bags for Purple Heart out in the driveway, so that was enough ambition for the morning. Another hot one, into the mid-90’s F and not a drop of rain in sight. May have to connect the sprinklers up and do some yard watering on Wednesday, no chance of rain until next week. Coaching my 7-year old soccer team today, first time I’ve coached that age in a few years, should be interesting.

Taters, you said:

I don’t know what a SMART is, but if you could buy some of those people some smarts it would be worth it… Take care and document everything, don’t want any fingers pointing at you if/when the crash comes.

Boo fae, among the plagues of humanity, idiot neighbors are not one of mine; good people on the left side that I have lived next to amicability for 20 years and virtually invisible ones on the right. Best of luck with the idiot.

Miss Owl, nice to see you around these parts again. And yeah, the littles learning they have to do stuff AGAIN the next day can bring about drama.

{{Nettie}}, if the heat gets too severe, you might want to check into a hotel for a night or two to get some decent sleep…just a suggestion.

Oopsie, I may have to look into that antenna. I’m paying Direct TV a lot of money for pitifully few hours actually watching stuff on the telly.

Sari, when you get the confirmation that the check has been delivered, climb right back up that lawyer’s rectum and make sure he gets it right this time and immediately!

I am enjoying the school stories, I only rode the school bus for one year out of my 12, the other years I walked it, some short, others about 1.75 miles.

OK, need to find sustenance and be about the day. Everyone have a good 2sDay.

Quite a workout yesterday by the PT. She had no mercy after I took a week off to let other things get better. But it was good to be moving. Somehow our idle chat got around to Alaska, where she really wants to go, so that passed some time whilst making things move. Took an Aleve before bedtime and really crashed hard.

Nellie: are you recovering from joint surgery? They warned me about that sort of thing happening. My sympathies with the ER experience; one would almost rather suffer at home than sit there being miserable. Your surgeon is probably going to want his own x-rays to see if anything has gone wrong.

i believe the shorter versions are called “chapel caps”, the longer ones mantillas. was the upgrade to the lace around first communion or confirmation?

jtc, i’m with you on the hats. i am a hat person, and i live by slop, slip, slap. slap on that hat!

I smiled :slightly_smiling_face:
I don’t know about ‘every corner’ but I’d go with taco trucks at least every half mile or even every quarter mile; what say you?
Anyway, since the orange man didn’t deliver, I have Hubs who makes a mean taco seasoning and cooks up some awesome tacos! There’s also a very good authentic Taco House about 2 miles away for when Hubs isn’t up to cooking.

I think we were allowed to wear them in 3rd grade or maybe it was around first Holy Communion in second grade like rocky mentioned and in 5th grade (probably right after confirmation) we were allowed to wear full triangular mantilla-like lacy head covering. We started out every school day by going to mass. Was so glad for Vatican 2 so that we didn’t have to say the responses in Latin and could understand what the priest was saying.

(taters} sounds like you work for, with and above some real doozy peeps; sounds like millenials who don’t have the same work ethic that we grew up with.

Planning to do some laundry, go to Fitness Center, credit union and Kroger to pick up a few things that are on the Save $1 when you buy 5 or more, plus some bananas (have to keep bod from cramping). Not sure about dinner but thinking about meat loaf, sweet potato and a zucchini dish.

Hot but reasonable heaving today.
I know cats mark their territory, but this is ridiculous.

At this point, I think you and the council inspector should consider arson.

See my reply to boofae

Probably confirmation, since back then, first communion was in 1st grade.

Lunch was mac-n-cheese-n-peas, with grapes for dessert. I have a loaf of onion bread in the bread machine, and when it’s done, we’ll go to the marine museum. They’ll have maybe an hour there before I have to deliver them home.

Roxy is really excited about her first day. Me, too. I won’t be getting Tobias till after 9 every day, so time to get stuff done. Then come January, I’ll just be picking them up around 4. So yay!

I’m gradually getting my life back.

I don’t remember my first day of school. I didn’t go to kindergarten because my parents couldn’t afford it. Remember this was in Floriduh in the 50s. By the time I got to first grade I already knew hoe to read and write and count past 10, so I was bored, and it must have showed, 'cause i wasn’t very popular with the teachers. I didn’t much enjoy school thereafter, but i those days kids weren’t allowed to skip grades, so I had to stick it out for all 12 years. I did have one teacher that I liked, Mr. Holman, for math in 11th grade. I was surprised, not surprised, to learn later he was gay, which colored my feelings towards a lot of people the rest of my family scorned. It’s possibly the reason I’m also agnostic. I questioned everything I’d been taught.
Oh well.

Gotta go to the doc today.

Later.

It’s a surprise “nice enough to have the windows open” day! It was 94 and ungodly humid yesterday and 90 and ungodly humid on Sunday, but at 2pm it’s only 78 and mostly sunny with a nice breeze – which makes the touch of humidity in the air quite tolerable.

I wasn’t born with the hat gene, but sometime in my 20s/30s I came to appreciate the usefulness of a baseball cap in hot/wet weather – or, when my bangs are simply not cooperating. I’ve taken to wearing a hat to the gym: at first because it rained on 3-4 consecutive training days, but now I like it because I don’t get distracted by wondering how my hair looks after I’ve been on my back, bending over, sweating, etc. I recently bought a new plain black hat specifically for gym days; it’ll get its debut this evening.

Here’s my kindergarten photo from 1976:

If it’s dated correctly, I was actually 4 years old; my birthday was a few days later.

About six months after my family moved to England in '83, the British school I went to told me that due to my late fall birthday I was supposed to be a year lower – but that, because I was doing well academically (and my parents didn’t want me to be behind when it was time to return to the States), they were going to let me stay put. To this day I’m not sure why they bothered saying anything…

Work is fairly quiet this afternoon (:crossed_fingers:), which is allowing me to make some minor-but-helpful changes to ~500 file names. Sometimes a menial, repetitive task with immediate results can be nice. In a couple of hours I’ll have my mid-year performance conversation with my boss: it should be both positive and short. (Don’t ask me how my company thinks that late August is “mid year”; our performance review milestones make no sense.) All of the mid-year conversations have to be done by the end of this week; I’ll be holding the ones with my direct reports tomorrow afternoon.

I’ve ordered a 6’ piece of white coaxial cable to use with the OTA antenna. Mostly because I will find any excuse to buy a gadget or accessory. The TiVo was connected to the wall outlet with a 4’ black cable, which is serviceable but I could use something just a little longer; the antenna came with a 12’ black cable, but anything more than 4’ will be visible and the walls are white; and I have a ridiculously long piece of white cable that I’m no longer using for the Verizon service (the one that was strung across the third bedroom). That one is currently connected and it’s really just way too long for what I need, plus coax is cheap and I have it in my head that a shorter cable might improve reception (don’t laugh!)…so, 6’ of white cable (triple shielded! ultra clarity!) will be delivered tomorrow.

In between renaming files and posting here I’m also researching the fall TV schedule/any new shows I might want to check out. No reason to avoid using the DVR for whatever network programs I can!

Shouldn’t it be, yanno, an “X”?
