Older Dopers: What new musical artists do you listen to?

I was watching Micheal Palmisano (he is a guitar teacher that does reaction videos) on YouTube and he did one one Morgan Wade. It is not very often I hear a song that is a gut punch that has me in tears listening but this song is powerful!

The last time I go hit this hard was listening to Cold Missouri Waters by James Keelaghan.

Reviving this rather than starting a new thread. Hopefully that is OK.

We watch SNL the day after it airs via Youtube and I always check out the musical acts. As an older guy, I’m typically disappointed  This last weekend, I was the opposite of disappointed and have a new to me pop/glam rock band that I’m loving: Måneskin. I’m not sure how I missed them since they seem to very popular right now. I really like their Teatro d’Ira, Vol. 1 album.

I’m almost 60, and here are a few of the new artists I’ve been listening to (I’m too lazy to find YouTube links for all these):

Mitski
Japanese Breakfast
Charli XCX
Twice [Korean girl group]
Dua Lipa
Red Velvet [Korean girl group]
Perfume [Japanese girl group]
Lana Del Rey
Aurora [Norwegian singer]
Marina
Caroline Polachek
Daoko [Japanese singer]
Meg & Dia
Rina Sawayama [British singer of Japanese origin]
Rita Ora
Robyn
Tegan and Sara

Acts I’ve come to love since the last update of this thread:
Wet Leg

Yeule

Maneskin are last year’s ESC winners. It was a surprising victory, you usually don’t hear much hard rock there, let alone a winner (with Lodi as famous exception).

Without reading anything beyond the OP, what I mean by “new” music is anything after Led Zeppelin’s Coda dropped in 1982. Anything from MTV (when it played music) is new to me. Artists that had albums released before MTV existed but continued to record get a pass in my view; Van Halen and the Wilson sisters are not “new artists”, Billy Idol is a “new artist”. Born in 1960.

Sorry had to get that off my chest before I started to read the thread. I am not sure I could recognize any artist who fits the OP’s definition of “new artist”.

I’m digging it. I’m a fan of pop and glam rock so it’s up my alley. My impression, after listening for a couple days, is the songs in Italian tend to be harder, and I like hearing him sing in Italian.

you mean the ones in Heart, or Wilson Phillips?

Please pardon me, I meant Ann and Nancy of Heart. I am vaguely aware of Wilson Phillips but not familiar with their music. Would have loved to meet their parents however.

(Have you seen the video clip of Michele Phillips talking about dropping by the Wilson household during the sixties and seeing all the furniture was moved outside and the living was covered in sand with a grand piano in the middle of it? I think it was from the movie about the wrecking crew. Anyway, that is when Brian was writing [I believe] Pet Sounds.)

Dang, love that band.

Hehehe, yeah, I was pleasantly surprised, too. Really liked the tone of both the guitar and bass, and the songs are pretty good glam rock.

My workplace used to play a pop/Top 40 channel, which introduced me to some newer artists that appealed. Now it plays 70’s classic rock, of which I am heartily sick. So when my officemate isn’t around, I’ll pull up YouTube and turn on a mix of Lorde, Adele, BROODS, Ingrid Michaelson, some Maggie Rogers, and some Rhiannon Giddens. Thanks to a thread here on the Dope, I have become a huge fan of Billie Eilish.

I’ve gotten into trance-slash-vocal chill - it covers up the endless repetition of the Eagles, Jackson Browne, and Chicago, without demanding close listening. But I’ve really come to like a trance singer from Vancouver, called Veela. She does a lot of gaming-related music (in fact, the first song of hers I ever heard was about Sarah Kerrigan, a character from StarCraft), and collaborates with many EDM bands like Feint, Boyinaband, and Marduk. I like her voice, and her lyrics - they’re mostly her own.

(ETA: I’m in my mid-fifties.)

I was going to post Chaise Longue! I can’t figure out why I like that song so much.

Never heard of it before this thread, but thanks for the addition. I checked out whatever other work they have out there, and it’s all solid. There’s a Tiny Desk Concert out there, too, on Youtube.

Thanks for recommending Wet Leg. “Chaise Longue” is the funnest song I’ve heard in ages.

My own current recommendations include:

“L.U.V.,” Catholic Action

“Cattails,” Big Thief

“Chonks,” Snarky Puppy

“Cowboy Guilt,” TORRES

Edited for punctuation

I certainly qualify (stuck in the 80s most of the time…) For ‘new’ artists…

Superorganism. Great band that has only released one album so far. I get the feeling it may be the only one as one of the key members seems involved in some sort of scandal.

Darren Korb. He’s done several video game soundtracks that are excellent (Bastion, Hades, et al)

Of Monsters and Men. Icelandic folkish-indie-rock.

Gustavo Santaolalla - video game soundtracks, particularly Last of Us 1/2

It’s cheeky and has a driving, urgent beat. I love it.

It is cheeky. I’m starting to think the “Big D” she got wasn’t her diploma.

Young the Giant

I just came across Big Thief recently, but I’ve listened to them practically every day since. I really like her voice, the hooks, even the tone of the production.

Brandi Carlile, what an incredible voice and songwriting talent.

Same for Jason Isbell, I listen to both daily.
