Olives marching to Philly on Sat. 11/22

The lovely and talented olivesmarch4th is coming down to Philly for the day, since she’s thinking of going to grad school here (Penn or Bryn Mawr). I’ve offered to be tour guide and to organize a dinner, and she said “yes please” to both. She’s mentioned an interest in art museums or suchlike.

So – afternoon – either gallerying in Old City or a trip to the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts – more accessible than the Art Museum for the carless amongst us, plus a really cool building.

Then an dinner in the evening – either in Old City or Center City somewhere. Or maybe down on South Street?

Anyone interested in getting in on one or both of these?

I’m interested. Where exactly is the academy? What restaurant were you thinking of?

PAFA rocks, but I would also suggest that the cab fare to the Rodin Museum is well worth the money.

Also, I found it kind of amazing to tour all the Founding Fathers type stuff downtown.

Oh, and lunch at the Reading Terminal Market is almost a “must”. Potato chips from the Quakers (mmmmmmmm), and Khalid down the row makes a mean falafel.

Plus there’s always Chinatown for good eats.

I’m in Las Vegas, but I’m confident that y’all will still have a good time.

The Academy is at Broad and Cherry (as you can see in the link), so very convenient to regional rail or the Broad Street subway.

And, yeah, obviously Reading Market for lunch, if lunch is going to be part of this.

For dinner – there’s way too many choices, I think it will depend on where we are during the afternoon, so I thought we could figure that out first and figure dinner out later.

I can’t make it on the 22nd. We’ve got a prior engagement, and we’re leaving town the following Monday.

I hate all y’all. :stuck_out_tongue:

Dag! That’s Philcon weekend. I’ll be over in Cherry Hill with the rest of the SF geeks. (Easily reached by the 406 bus or the NJ Transit train, if anyone has a mad impulse to join us.) Have fun!

Wait, when did they move Philcon across the river? And also, where in Cherry Hill is a large enough venue that’s remotely near any train station? It’s so not an ‘anything but car’ friendly town.

If you guys do want to hit the Art Museum (the Asian art collection is absolutely worth it, IMO), I think the Phlash tourist bus thing goes right in front of it from all around Center City, and I think it’s pretty cheap.

The 22nd is likely to be a very bad weekend for me, with all the end of the semester stuff going on. I’ll keep an eye on this thread just in case, but I will probably have to send my regrets.

This is their first year over there – they’ve basically been priced out of anyplace in Center City. (One of my best friends is in tight with the whole Philcon crowd, so I know waaaaaaaaaay more than I care to about the behind the scenes crap.)

Ultrafilter – maybe you could hook up with us for an hour or so for dinner? I do owe you a meal for your help with that article.

You know, we could move it to a different weekend. The 29th?

Me! I’m interested!

Oh wait…I live in Boston.

Olives, why don’t you think of looking at Simmons, or BU, or any of the many, many fine schools we have here? I mean, Philadelphia…really?:stuck_out_tongue:

That’s Thanksgiving weekend. Which doesn’t make a difference to me, but might to others.

Oops. Right. I’ll be in Syracuse with my Aunt that weekend. Jeez, Thanksgiving already?

All I’m trying to express is that the actual date is flexible.

Whichever weekend we pick, some people will be able to make it and some people won’t.

Why don’t we just go ahead and plan for you and I to do a culture crawl the afternoon of the 22nd, and then anyone who can meet us for dinner can, well, meet us for dinner?

Sounds good to me! Sorry to complicate things…

It’s a possibility…we could hop Amtrak into the city. Let me discuss with supervenusfreak and get back to this thread later.

First question: This year, as twickster mentioned.
Second question: the Cherry Hill Crowne Plaza is about half a mile or so from the Cherry Hill station of the NJ Transit train to Atlantic City (the station is at the former Garden State Race Track). The 406 bus goes down the road past the hotel. Details at http://2008.philcon.org/.
Final observation: You got that right.

That would be great – I haven’t seen you guys in eons. Well, other than in the reality TV threads, of course.

If it ends up the 22nd count me in

been WAY too long.

Well, we’re officially in, for the time being. We’ll figure out our timeline as far as trains and such go when venues are actually decided.
