They were on the up and up! And they weren’t walking around just “wherever.” They weren’t in a shopping mall for Pete’s sake.

I’m onboard with the proposition to carry around guns:
Where it’s legal to do so;
Where it’s legal to do so:
And finally, where it’s legal to do so.
I’m onboard with the proposition that it’s NOT okay to cary around guns:
etc…
Just because YOU (generic “you,” not you specifically kath) don’t think it’s okay doesn’t make it so.
Guys in camo with orange vests/hats, carrying guns into a mall: probably not, unless they’re in the Cabella’s parking lot and heading into the Cabella’s.
Guys in camo with orange vests/hats carrying guns into the courthouse, police station, hospital, school, airport: most probably not.
Guys in camo with orange vests/hats by the side of the road in rural areas: yup, it’s huntin’ season.
Oh for Pete’s sake, did you even read what I posted? I never said they weren’t on the up and up. Clearly they were. However, as I’ve said before, I don’t think it’s unreasonable in this situation, where guys with guns are within obvious eyesight of a nuclear plant to send a police officer to make sure they’re hunters. Would I have called? Probably not, but I don’t get the vitriol against the guy who did.
The dudes weren’t arrested and anally probed. When it was clear that they were hunters, they went on their merry way.
Remind me not to visit the heartlands any time soon…
The affection and regard is assuredly mutual.
Seems many of these city folk need to remain in the city, for their benefit and ours
Yes, I read what you wrote, and it’s crazy talk to go examining every hunter in the country to verify their up and upness.
Two miles!
flicks, I’m city-folk, and I’m kinda embarrassed to admit that right about now.
All these rules. Why do you hate America? Hunters’ right to decide where and when they’ll shoot stuff is God-granted, surely!?! Hunters NEVER EVER EVER trespass on private land to hunt without permission. I know if I ever own lots of land, I’m going to absolutely furious with any Yankee fags who report potential trespassing unlicensed poachers because it says right there IN THE BIBLE (someplace I"m sure) that hunters never do anything wrong and should NEVER BE QUESTIONED OMGOMGOMG!!!1! IT’S HUNTING SEASON FOR SOMETHING SOMEWHERE ALL THE TIME!!!1!
I’m sure someone is embarrassed about the knee-jerk lockdown. OTOH, maybe not. I’ve worked at SUPER-DUPER TOP SECRET PLACES TOO, and they frequently have things called “drills.” So locking the place down probably isn’t that unusual.
Finally, their huge panicked response was to call Sheriff Tam Terry down at Bob’s Steak-an-Choke Lounge eating his/her typical morning breakfast of 12 doughnuts and six steaks to see if they’d mind checking it out. If the nuclear weapon facility was genuinely panicked do you really believe their official response is to call Sheriff Tam??? Not the president, the governor, or the military? They called Tam??? “Help, help! Officer Tam! Save us from the terrorists attacking our facility!!!”
God help us if that’s the best Texas has got.
Reporting guys walking around in camo carrying weapons in my area would cause an alarm similar to a report of guys in jeans wearing cowboy hats in Montana. There is no time during the year when it isn’t hunting season for something. And there is no restriction upon carrying weapons openly except in specifically designated areas of restriction, such as school zones.
I read the local 911 report on line every day and they do get a number of calls reporting gun shots that get explained as hunters on the bay, trap shooters at the range, or rifle hunters or target shooters in the forests.
Alarmism about OH NO, GUNS!!! just wastes a lot of law enforcement time.
I treat them like spiders. The world is full of them, you can’t avoid them, and they are highly unlikely to hurt you or anyone you know.
Imagine if they’d been of Middle Eastern extraction.
It’s not a ZOMG Panic!!111ONE situation, but its very reasonably, a “This is probably nothing, but should be checked out” situation. We’ve seen right wing domestic terrorism before, and there’s a lot of reason to be wary of the teabaggers and the gun nuts right now.
I’m not sure who would be the greater idiot: someone who dresses up like Billy-Bob the Inbred Hunter to go steal some plutonium, or someone who assumes that the eeevil terrorists are going to dress up like Billy-Bob the Inbred Hunter in order to steal plutonium.
Anyway, in civilized parts of the country, people don’t walk around with guns, so let’s just let Texas, the deep south, and most of the Rocky Mountain region secede whether they want to or not. Problem solved!
You know what I find most troublesome about this whole thing? The fact that the location of a nuclear weapon assembly plant is a matter of public knowledge. I mean, Jesus Christ, people! At least *try *to disguise it as a soap factory or something!
I would agree that there are many politicians who have every right to be concerned with the teabaggers, but that concern has nothing to do with guns
In other words, all the fly-over country. Being able to walk away from the burden of supporting the rest with our tax dollars, resources and farm production would probably be OK with most.
Now that this has officially turned into chest-thumping regionalism, we might as well trot this out. And while you’re at it, this. Yankee that I am, I pay more federal income tax every year than the per capita GDP of most of these states. Get real.
Well, this is quite the hijack but as for Federal income tax - you pay no more or less than anyone living the “those states” with similar incomes.
Yeah, I’ll sure miss all that corn syrup that I subsidize with my tax dollars.
Yup. But even the most cursory look at income distribution by state and size of overall tax burden paints a certain picture. In 2006, for example, the income tax receipts of FL, NY, and CA accounted for 29% of the total taxes received. It is difficult to argue that somehow we are being supported by the tax dollars of flyover country.
Couldn’t say. If I see Him, maybe I’ll ask him. But it’s pretty low on my “to-do” list should I run into God.
I never said they didn’t.
Well, if it’s your land, feel free to react as you see fit.
I wouldn’t know; haven’t read it.
Once more (just in case you didn’t get it the first time): I never said they didn’t. But I haven’t apointed myself Defender of the Lands, And Fields, And Ponds, And Lakes, And Fruitbats, And Breakfast Cereals, And…
…and then called in a report of suspicious people with guns, 2 miles from the corner of no-and-where, when those suspicious types are armed with fowling pieces (the weapon of choice for the genteel terrorist, I’m sure)
Well, I specifically addressed the issue about hunting seasons in Texas; if you feel the need to find out about other places, google is your friend.
Lord knows* you need one.
*This is a figure of speech. It in no way endorses, condones, condemns, advocates, etc., any notional deity and/or resultant religious belief system.
And just where are you getting your info regarding the culinary/dietary habits of the local sherriff? Or his professional competency?
And since you’re reading impaired (but your ability to strawman an argument is superb), so far I’ve not criticized the facility staff for the measures they took, and continue to take, to keep the facility secure.
I merely pointed out the kind fo security such a facility might have, and some it obviously does have, and contrasted it to the threat posed by two people, in camo and hunting garb, with long-barreled shotguns, out duck hunting, in duck hunting season, in a rural area, which typically has more instances of hunting and hunting-related activities, in state that has year-round hunting.
One only can imagine what would happen if they saw someone in a yellow Rider truck drive by.
